Jean (otakumom) I haven't thought about that show in years. Is it in re-runs somewhere?

Jean (otakumom) I used to be a Sci-fi geek and watched SG1, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica. I haven't been following any shows faithfully nowadays. :(

Nuh-uh, just me reliving it's magic on DVD. ^^
(God, that sounds so cheesy.)

Yeah, I don't really watch much TV either...
Oh, wow. Those shows are pure geek heaven.

Erik Curre (ecurre) | 12 comments My wife and I live in Japan, so we tend to watch lots of Japanese shows. Lately we've been renting videos of Shimura Ken. He's a popular comedian, well known for his slapstick scenes of daily life, baka tono (stupid king) skits, and henna ojisan (perverted old man).

Well worth a watch if you can get hold of them. You don't really even need to know Japanese to enjoy it.

Lol...it sounds like a great tagline to something. (⌒▽⌒)

What are the baka tono skits like? I think I have an idea what the genre is like but not sure.

Erik Curre (ecurre) | 12 comments The baka tono skits are set in feudal Japan. Shimura Ken plays the part of a daimyo (lord) holding court in his castle. The skits usually involve Shimura misbehaving in some way that's unbecoming of his royal status, or asking his retainers to do something strange.

For example, Bakatono-sama (Shimura's character) is quite a womanizer, so he's frequently caught trying to sneak out of his castle to spy on some woman, or devises various schemes to peek beneath the kimonos of the ladies at court.

In other skits he ends up bored with his kingly duties and tries to find some way to entertain himself. I particularly enjoyed one where he organized a gross food competition between the ladies of the court and his samurai. He made each side try to outdo the other by throwing random food items in a blender and feeding the concoction to the opposite side (yes, Shimura Ken has a habit of mixing modern technology with the feudal setting, often with hilarious results). The samurai won.
