seriously, the only thing that kept me reading was the main character's thought and strength and the history of the end which was horrible.
Cloud Atlas ....... I kept reading it thinking it was going to get better. Winter's Tale...... Just can't get into this book.
I feel like a lot of the classic books aren't very good, like Anna of Green Gables. I just didn't get it.

Even I didn't like many classic books....like Persuauion, and Emma.

I tend to question the intellect of anyone who enjoys the above-mentioned items. Its not just a matter of taste. If a friend of mine tells me they're a fan of 'Twilight' I look at them somewhat cock-eyed.

As always, I sound really harsh in my opinions (and I'm sorry 'bout that) but its just a matter of where I'm coming from--as I approach a book--vs where most people come from. I don't crave escapism or fantasy, and my tastes aren't influenced by my peers. I don't feel the need to 'be up on the latest George R.R. Martin release', in order to gossip about it at the water-cooler. Its like my attitude towards television: after a certain point in my life, I knew I had no further interest in ever seeing another sitcom-with -a-laugh/track again; or another 'police' show; or another 'hospital' show. One grows out of things; one's tastes mature. You start to see the repetitive patterns in products. A sitcom is a sitcom is a sitcom. Its tired. For the same reason, I don't play with plastic action figures in the sandbox anymore; and I've never taken to video-games..it feels like going 'backwards'.
We live in an age of mass-produced and mass-advertised culture for people to consume. We're a society with too much leisure-on-our-hands. A lot of these johnny-come-lately-authors are in business only to satisfy that market. They're digging up any worn-out, depleted, hackneyed material and re-working it; re-treading it. Stephen King-style.
I'm picky. I only want to give my attention to what I can detect is original, cogent, unique, significant, as-relevant-as-possible. A lot of the above list doesn't make the cut with me for that reason alone. I read books to learn and understand, I read to improve myself, I read to 'get somewhere' ...rather than out of a mere need-to-kill-time...
I thought of another book that I didn't like that everyone was raving about and it was Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Didn't care much for The Book Thief either. The Twilight series - while I thought it was an interesting twist to the vampire genre, I absolutely hated Bella and Kristen Stewart in the movies didn't help that feeling at all.

Sanika wrote: "The House of Night series ..just one word for this series - HORRIBLE"
In total agreement with you, Sanika. I try to make myself forget sometimes that i ever started this series. Especially after I read Chosen, i felt like killing Zoe. And i don't want to read the remaining books, as i heard they turn Erik into some kind of villian in the subsequent books, which i vehemently oppose. He was right, all throughout, but he ends up as the bad guy. I HATE THAT ZOEBIRD FOR THAT! Arghhhh!
For me, i don't recall a specific book but it's an author. Harlan Coben! I keep hearing how good his books are & his book jackets overviews sound awesome. I even have one of his newer books on my TR shelf! I've tried a couple of times but for the life of me, I just can't get into his books! I don't know what it is but maybe, if I could figure it out, I'd have some great books to read!

I get your point about every other book in this list except Atlas Shrugged . I know its a bi-polar book but still shocked that you didn't like it..anyway to each his own ..!!!
This thread is so dangerous, if you tell a book you hated which everyone loved and the other person is a big fan of it then you're totally screwed LOL!
Everyone is entitled to his own opinions. I did not like Revolution 2020, but apparently it's 'The' revolutionary book to some of my friends.

I didn't like it too, I liked the story but the female lead was a bitch and the writing was bad. And the two male characters were....plain, kinda.

Well of course u guys are gonna hate the book if u look at it from a technical point of view !The writing was bad, I agree and all the characters in the book sucked. No doubt. But I liked the story ! What he did in the last, the "righteousness" he suddenly develops, no question the circumstances were stupid but, was refreshing ! I think the book had some realistic elements rather than being a mere novel ! If u really wanna like the book, do not get technical ! The characters' being plain, is what gave the book that realistic element ! They weren't any hot-shot millionaire who get everything they want !
That's true....yeah, the book was realistic but the characters sucked and the writing sucked too. Anywya, Bhagat's writing always sucks. And that girl...she is such a s**t!!! The main reason I don't like the book is because of that girl...and yeah, the climax, the 'self-righteousness' moment....I thought what the guy did was good, but how he did it....too bad.
Immature. I agree. And yeah, Bhagat's not the most talented writer but one thing I like about him is, his books are always either based on some real story or at-least have that realistic element to it. Fictions, in my opinion are just too good to be true and so I feel it's better to read something realistic than something over-the-top sweet !But yeah the girl, Arti, was a s**t. Period.
Yes, his books are realistic, but for me, realistic isn't that important so...yeah, his books have never been much to me.

Time Traveler's Wife...agree with u..couldn't even complete it...:P

I liked room but really didn't love it and while I was ok with the boy character by the end I was annoyed with the mom. I think my expectations were just to high for this book
I have four of them, so far, Atonement, North and South, Twilight, and Fifty Shades of Grey. I didn't hate Atonement but thought it okay, I couldn't stand Briny. The more I talk about the book, the more I don't like it.
For North and South, I find it mind numbing boring and just can't get into it. It's one book I have abandoned.
With Twilight, it's horrid. I live in the area the book is about and oh my goodness, it's a monstrosity and embarrassment to here. So, didn't go good research. I'm sick of seeing Twilight stuff every where, it was old the first day.
Finally, 50 Shades of Grey. Just as bad as Twilight. I swear it was written for the same group of people. Just horrible and now there's going to be a movie, lol. Now we will have a bunch of bored housewives and teenage girls looking up BDSM. Nothing is wrong with BDSM but please we don't need wannabes to be snooping around where they really shouldn't even be interested in. A message to them "Stay in the vanilla world!"
I didn't exactly hate it but loved it a lot less than many people here : It's good but definitely not the best, as I expected :/ Mistborn : The Final Empire. But anyway am gonna read it! #Guiltypleasures
Ruchi wrote: "The Alchemist - Paulo CoelhoJust didn't get this books....couldn't understand the hype surrounding this book and why people love it so much!!"
I was going to put the same book! LOL
I understand perfectly!
I didn't like it at all. And when I see comments that people enjoyed it, I'm shocked! It didn't attract me.
50 Shades od Grey. It took all I had to get 3/4 into the book and I had to stop. I found it poorly written and I didn't see the shock value that everyone else did. I thought the guy was creepy and greasy (and not because of his sex habits)

Same... I actually rated it 4-5 stars mostly but when I reread it recently...I changed most stars :P
The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold. I've gone back to it time and time again...just can't get through it. :(
Also the Maze Runner, by James Dashner (couldn't get through the first chapter, because the third person narration was off, somehow. For me, anyway.) The Vampire Diaries series, by LJ Smith.
House of Night series, by PC and Kristin Cast.
