SOLVED: Unknown YA Battle of the Books [s]

This was a book I read in middle school for battle of the books. I don't remember much about it but that it had a ship on the cover and was about a girl. It was really boring at first and then became interesting around page 100. Also the author is toward the beginning of the alphabet; I remember it being close by the Avi section so it might have even started with 'A' - or at least something at the very beginning.
