Really interesting review, Rob. I agree that it felt like this book was sort of arbitrarily placed in the series and I didn't really get the point of telling the beginning of Trull's story after part of the middle of it. I actually liked the beginning best and tended to like it less as it went on, though some parts of the ending had more point than the middle, where the world-building set-up was mostly finished and the plot set in motion but everything was still taking a long time to happen very. It was my least favorite of the series so far (not saying much of course) when I was expecting it might be my favorite. For some reason Interlibrary Loan hasn't gotten my Reaper's Gale yet. With any luck it will have come over the weekend and I can start tomorrow, but it's weird how it's taking so long when they got an obscure decades-old Mexican geography book in half the time.
Great book as usual in the series. One thing that had me thinking at the end was whether the Azath House in lether was somehow different than the other houses in the world. Perhaps the first?I noticed that this house was never really a house with an entrance. None of the creatures it contained were inside the house, but instead in the ground in basically a cemetery. Also, there is arguably no guardian prior to Kettle. I am curious if it was really connected to the other houses for travel.
I think Udinaas does see a doorway in one of his dreams - But I'm thinking this Azath must have been cut off the Azath network along with the rest of Lether by Gothos ritual
I really struggled with this in the beginning. New characters, new setting and Holds instead of Warrens. Enjoyed it by the end and there are plenty of characters I want to see again. I hope I don't have to wait too long. Agree with your review Rob.My ramble https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

You'll have to wait until Reaper's Gale
You'll have to wait until Reaper's Gale
I was another who found it difficult to get into this book with none of my fav characters, new setting, new ideas, etc. About halfway through the book I started having trouble putting it down and ended up really enjoying it.
Thanks for the great chapter summaries and discussions here. Definitely helped me understand what was going on early in this book.
ditto... slow start... too many characters... but became compelling by the endstill not 100% sure what the point of it was though... I guess I'll have to wait and see
the chapter summaries and discussion were really great, thanks so much everyone
P.S. not sure about the moments of farce thoughout (see ankle bitting)
Slow start but now I would rate MT as my second favourite, after MOI and before DG, HoC and GotM.As a lot of other people I also thought we would end at Trulls shorning but I guess we don't have to be shown everything.
Can't wait to get to the next one, I've heard its one of the best according to a lot of folks.
Bonehunters next. A powerful book. It continues the story from House of Chains. I envy you going into this your first time through.
I found the start of this not only slow, but frustrating. It does get a lot better though.
Bone hunters is my favorite.
