June 2009 Reading Challenge
Yeah I explored the site a little and bookmarked it :D I'll have to go check them out of the library tomorrow :D
Any other authors you would recommend in the genre? I really liked the Anita Blake books, though Hamilton isn't one of my favorite authors...WAY to descriptive. I don't mean the sex, that doesn't bother me (I like the genre right ;) ) its just when she describes someone who walks in the room, she goes on FOREVER.
Sorry bout the rant :P But any recommendations?
My personal favorites are #1 for sure JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood (have you read these? If not you are sooo missing out)
Christine Feehan of course,
Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters (love me some Acheron)
Lora Leigh's Breed books...
Let me think...
Lara Adrian's Midnight Breeds are good.
Adrian Phoenix's Rush of Wings was good. Dark, but good. Not a lot of sex, more UF than PNR.
There are so many but those are probably my favorites.
Well i'm in but I'm stumped. I have 250 odd books on my bookcase so I am simply going to have to choose from them... but how do I easily find books on there (since a great many of them ARE paranormal) that are on that list... I wish there were an easier way to check. I went through the first 8 pages and I saw a bunch I've already read... or I saw ones from series I know are on said bookcase but none were like "number 1 in this series you have but haven't started"... Grrr. This challenge SEEMS great but also troublesome for quickly putting together a stack. :/ And I am behind on these Harry Dresden's so I don't have time to look. So I'm in... but heck if I know what I'm reading.
Oh... I WILL read the new Sookie book as soon as mum gives it to me. Is it sad that the ONE episode of the pr0ntastic crappy tv show has me bleh on reading the new Sookie book? :( I'd always loved Sookie until that travesty. *SIGH* I even drove into Richmond to see Charlaine and I HATE Richmond. *SIGH* HBO sucks.
Lady,This is what colleen recommended:
"The last book listed on page 20 has 2 adds to the "paranormal-romance" shelf. So if you search for a book and go to it's page, check the list of shelves on the right hand side of the page (popular shelves). If it is listed on the paranormal-romance shelf by at least two people then it should be okay. Hope this helps. "
Yeah and I'm not so sure I understand what I'm looking for there... but I can give it a whirl. Next month. I still have to finish this month's challenge and I chose long books. LOL On the brighte note, I won a minor award for my costume, majorly amused the audience, and had people talking to me for the rest of the weekend over my costume and skit! YAY! My hard work there paid off, even if it put me majorly behind in reading! One award in journeyman down, two to go!
LOL I did it page by page myself. I hope everyone else isn't reading this and ROFLing because we don't "get it"Congrats on the costume award! Did you have a great time?
Thanks for the book ideas. The Black Dagger Brotherhood sounded interesting so I made the first one part of my June reading challenge :D
I'm going to have to figure out what to do to see about finding books. I mean seriously, with as many are are on my bookcase surely 9 are found in those 20 pages. I did see a book I started a year ago but it was so painful I never finished it. LOL Mostly though, I didn't think I saw most of what I had and that's depressing. But I do have a ton of books so...Thanks! I had a GREAT time! And I was really proud of my award. I was super nervous competing at that level but I did well. Yay!
I have to warn you about the 9th Sookie book...I didn't like it very much. The way she wrote it and the plot just came off as she was FORCED to write this and really didn't want to. It seems like a space filler of a book for such a good series, if that makes any sense?
Kyle wrote: "Thanks for the book ideas. The Black Dagger Brotherhood sounded interesting so I made the first one part of my June reading challenge :D "
The first book, Dark Lover, is like most first books in a series. Lot's of plot, backstory, etc. The thing about this series is it's not a series she has created, she has created an entire world. LOTS of information. Dark Lover is great, but they just keep getting better and better and I can honestly say the Black Dagger Brotherhood are my all time favorite PNR books.

I did notice that the BDB took up several positions on page 1. LOL *sigh* I love the brotherhood.

So it wasn't just me? Thats good. I haven't got to talk to other people about it so it helps to know my opinion wasn't that far off track.
The BDB is a series best read in order, because the main plot line developes rapidly through the series. The characters are amazing and I truly adore each one. Yes, I know, they are characters in a book, but JR Ward (aka the WARDen) makes them so real.If you choose to buy them, at least they are in paperback, with the exception of the last book, Lover Avenged. In my opinion, it is worth it even paying hardcover for the future books. There is a JR Ward, Black Dagger Brotherhood forum on Good Reads. I'll find the link for you.
OK, here's the GoodReads link:
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...
And here is the link to the BDB website:
http://www.jrward.com
There is a ton of information there, including excerpts from her books. On the main page, that link I gave you, theres a section called Slices of Life. That is a great read. I hope you'll check it out!
Haha. yeah I have to hide my purchases when I get them. when my Husband finds me browsing books I usually get pulled away so I shop by myself and hide them when I get home.
Lauren wrote: "Haha. yeah I have to hide my purchases when I get them. when my Husband finds me browsing books I usually get pulled away so I shop by myself and hide them when I get home."I don't see a problem with this. Now, when we have to start buying our books behind dumpsters in dark alleys from men wearing trenchcoats with nothing underneath them...THEN we might have a problem. Unless of course the guy is also selling fake library cards. Then it's ok.

Moi I am just like you. I reserve books and then pick them up after work and just place them in my "special spot" so my husband does not know. I am afraid what he would do. haha if he knew exactly how much I spent and how often I REALLY went to Barnes and Noble after work and on the weekeneds.

Magic Strikes-Illona Andrews
well, the library came through for me today--so now I'm only missing ONE of the books I need for the June challenge. Waiting on PBS (www.paperbackswap.com) for it to get here. But if I manage to stay awake past midnight tonight, I'll start in on Sookie. But that's mainly so that I can get it finished and passed over to Oz.
I also have 2 books from a series (sigh, #3 and #4, why is there a waiting list for #1 and #2????) and Match Made in Hell. Also, the waiting list for the first Bones book just is NOT moving. The person who has it out is appearantly planning on keeping it forever. :o(

sigh, not enough sleep in the last 6 days (total of about 21 hours sleep since Monday--most of that last night). Anyway, I really want June to get here. :o) I have the books I have all arranged in the order I'm going to read them, and am waiting on the 1 book on my list, plus the 2 that I've selected as "back-ups" (just in case I decide that I can't stand to read one book) to arrive from PBS.
At least you have books... I'm still trying to dig through all those pages to try to figure out what I have on my bookcase that I can read... Oy... this one is hard! LOL
I'm in, but I'll post titles as I go along. This was an easy challenge to find titles for so I'll just be posting the first 9 I finish that qualify.
i stayed up late last night::just so that i could start Halfway to the Grave::i'm only a couple of chapters in::but::hey::ths story is good::so love cat and bones together::can't wait to read more.....::

To be honest, the overloaded bookshelf issue is why I bought my Sony book reader. I have MANY bookshelves, plus all the boxes in the garage. They survived Hurricane Ike, but I'm not sure how they're doing in the humidity. I need to at least move them inland. Or buy digital copies of my favorites... Anyway, I'm going to put some books on a list. They may not be off the Goodreads shelf, but they're books I have and books I want to read and they're paranormally... So...
1. Red-headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells
2. Storm Born by Richelle Mead
3. Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione
4. Dagger-Star by Elizabeth Vaughn
5. The Dream Thief by Shana Abe
And I'm sure I have more to put on my list, but I'll have to wait on those till I have time to look through my stack and see what's there. Only one of these books is on the first few pages of the "shelf." I'm looking through it, down to p. 12 or so, and still I'm finding either books I've already read, or books by authors that haven't really clicked with me. So, I'll pick out more--but not today...

6. Breaking Dawn - Stephenie Meyer
7. At Grave's End - Jeaniene Frost
8. When Twilight Burns - Colleen Gleason
9. Kiss of Fury - Deborah Cooke
I managed to find some books for this challenge. I hoep i can get through them becuse I have to read that Nobody Gets the Girl this month and it's definitely not on that list... As it turns out, looks like I've got a bunch of Katie Maxwell books to read. Hopefully they will go fast... Right now I'm reading another one of hose Broken Hearts whatever books. It's OK. I am not enjoying as much as the others. The main character in this one is grating.
Maybe that's not it... Crud... Lonely Hearts? Urg... the one with the little town with all the single parent vampires... I think the author's last name is Barsdale... Sorry I don't have it by me... it'll come to me after I post this I'm sure. LOL
I've read some others in the series for challenges before. They were more enjoyable. Oh well, at least it reads fast. I'll finish it lickity split. It's just this particular character has a voice that is grating on me. Bleh.

Ok, June 1,and 1 book down. :o)
1) Eternal Pleasure by Nina Bangs
2) Playing With Fire by Gena Showalter (that's if its available in a non-Kindle format)
2a) In case 2 isn't available) Morrigan's Cross by Norma Roberts
3) Dead if I Do by Tate Halloway
4) Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh
5)Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris
6) The Vampire who Loved me—Teresa Medeiros
7) Jacob---Jacquelyn Frank
8) Coyote’s Mate by Lora Leight
9) The Reluctant Miss Van Helsing by Minda Webber
Also, an update on the year to date totals for the whole group--1111 books. Not a bad number, is it?
:o)
Ok, this newest of the Sookie books left me wanting MORE. I only gave it 4 stars, mainly because 3.5 isn't possible. Sookie seems to be turning into a "victim" in this one. She's whiny, complaining and generally not her usual "perky" self. Or did it not seem like that to any of yfou that have already read the book?
Still, I'll be passing it on to Oz probably tomorrow or Wednesday.

You're very welcome. She has tons of books.

You can read excerpts from every book and she has them listed by series AND in reading order.
Shadow Game is book 1 in Ghostwalkers.
