Would anyone like to join me in reading ...?
Dhanaraj - would it be a good idea to ask Leslie to add The Sea, the Sea here? That's the thread I go to to remind me of upcoming readalongs...
I think Laura had done it already. If not, please do inform Leslie. And that is right way to remind ourselves. Thanks.
I've just posted the message there then. Looking forward to it, although it's a long book as I remember ;)

Okay...I'll let you know once I have it!

Yes now I remember! She'll do it as son as she'll be able

Laura, I may have lost track on this, but are some of us reading The Golem and the Jinni in September?
Yes we were saying that; I'll be at the seaside - hopefully! - till the 8th; can we do from the 9/10?
LauraT wrote: "Yes we were saying that; I'll be at the seaside - hopefully! - till the 8th; can we do from the 9/10?"Are you letting Leslie know, or shall I? There were a few other people I think
I can't wait to see what all of you think of that book . It's not usually the kind of book I read , but I loved it and hope there 'a a sequel .
yes there were. If I remember right I even started a discussion here around. Can you please tell it to LEslie?
LauraT wrote: "Yes! It was september. Shall we open the thread now?"Maybe leave it a bit nearer, if we're starting around 9th Sept.
Great then! Let's start on the 8th or 9th and I hope to remember to apoen a proper discussion the first days of Sept. I'll be at the seaside then, so if I forget, will someone think of it or remind me???

There were several of us interested in reading The Secret History of Costaguana if it was not chosen as the fiction book group read. Am I posting this in the correct place? Who would like to read this and when?
Chrissie wrote: "There were several of us interested in reading The Secret History of Costaguana if it was not chosen as the fiction book group read. Am I posting this in the correct place? Who woul..."Yes, Chrissie, correct place. I'd like to read this, but not till October, so if others want September, I'll catch up with you all later.
Gill, let's see when the others want to read it. I am fine with waiting, as long as I know we will be reading it. I am very much looking forward to this one.Glad I found the right place!
Gill, I went ahead and bought The Red and the Black, so I will be reading it soon. You can see what I think of it and I can see what you think of The Charterhouse of Parma. I wonder which one is best, but I found R&B a bit more to my taste. I am scared that if I start with one I don't like I will go no further with the author.
Chrissie wrote: "Gill, I went ahead and bought The Red and the Black, so I will be reading it soon. You can see what I think of it and I can see what you think of The Charterhouse of Parma..."I've abandoned C of P,Chrissie. I was bored silly by it
Gill, that doesn't sound good. My next book planned is The R&B...... Now I am even more scared that it will be a failure.
Chrissie, you might find some of the characters off-putting (unpleasant), but I don't think you'll find The Red and the Black boring.
Greg, yup, I have heard the characters are not necessarily nice but that the book is good. i will start it today. Just finished this morning my previous book. Thank you, Greg. Did you read The R&B long ago or recently? Have you read other books by Stendhal, and if you have how do they compare?
Jenny, please set up a thread for the reading of The Secret History of Costaguana starting October 1st. Gill, Paula, Diane and I want to read this in October. If I have done something wrong please tell me. Anyone else interested is of course welcome. Please let us know if you too are interested in joining us.
I read The Red and the Black less than a year ago, but I haven't read anything else by Stendhal; so I don't know how it compares to his other works.

I have zero trouble with the beginning. Interesting right from the start. It is about a saw-miller's son who wants to make something of himself. He has been employed as a tutor for the mayor's three kids. The boy's father does not like that his son loves books and so was glad to get him out of the sawmill and would earn money from the mayor too. It is set in a small village near Besançon, France.
Gill, this one by Stendahl captures your interest immediately, but I have no idea how it will hold up.
I've set it up for you Chrissie, it is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...Gill, I've tried the Charterhouse once and abandoned it, interestingly the same happened to me the first time I attempted to read The Red and the Black, I just absolutely couldn't get into it, yet 3 years later I listened to it and loved it. Very odd that. It seems I need 2 attempts with Mr. Stendhal always.
Thank you Jenny.Re: The Red and the Black. Not sure what I think. Some of the characters are really extremely naive, others extremely self-centered and egotistical. Will continue.
I realize this is a book most people have read already, but if anyone else missed it (like me!), I'm going to be reading Animal Farm in September in honor of Banned Books Week. Very short and would probably provide some good opportunity for discussion. Anyone want to join me?
I'd be happy to read it again Shannon, but I couldn't do it until mid-September because of other readalongs. :)
Greg wrote: "I'd be happy to read it again Shannon, but I couldn't do it until mid-September because of other readalongs. :)"That's fine! We can save it for actual Banned Books Week, which is Sept 21-27, if that works.
Anyone else?
I would love to re-read Animal Farm. I'll join whenever you decide to read. The week of September 21 seems good for now
the book club I run the reading for pleasure book club is reading animal farm as its first classic book club group read too. if anyone wants to join up, feel free too. would love to have you join us. The animal farm read there starts Monday.

I would love too. Haven't read it.

I'm up for a readalong of Animal Farm. I was going to read in the coming year, but sooner is perhaps better that later.
I have been meaning to read Animal Farm for over a year, what better time than during a readalong? :)
Wow, glad to see so much interest in Animal Farm! I've never done a readalong before - shall I start a thread now, or wait til Sept 21?
