Good Heavens! How could I have forgotten Dell Shannon's Luis Mendoza series. She and Ed McBain were my intro to police procedurals.

This is a series I have been reading. I have to say that their relationship has developed in the opposite way from what I expected. The most recent book Already Dead was published in the UK in June but still no sign of it in the US.

Cathy DuPont (cathydupont) | 132 comments Manugw wrote: "Norwegian Jo Nesbo, Harry Hole"

You know Harry Roolaart? A GR friend of mine and he's reading Nesbo. He's my 'go to' person for all questions on Scandinavian books/writers.

Harry's great. Very patient and understands my ignorance of the genre. In my mind, Scandinavian writers are alone and apart from American counterparts in the same/similar genre.

Need his link, let me know. Not pushing Harry, but he knows answers before the questions are asked re: Norwegian writers.

Also, I have The Redeemer and trying to pass along to someone in the U. S. Anyone want it? Please let me know, it's yours!

message 65: by Manugw (last edited Sep 21, 2013 04:16PM) (new)

Manugw Ok, ask his opinion about Swedish Henning Mankel, and Icelander Andradur Indridalson, and then please let me know. From Mankel, who wrote many stories, what is his favorite book ?. So far I have not found any acclaimed Finnish mystery writer

message 66: by Cathy (last edited Sep 21, 2013 04:38PM) (new)

Cathy DuPont (cathydupont) | 132 comments Hi Manugw:

Harry is active on GR and just sent him the link to this page so he'll respond here...cutting me out as the middleman. Already gave him the 'heads up' but honestly didn't expect anyone to ask. Glad you do have a question.

I'll learn right along with you. And if Harry doesn't know, he'll say so. He's a super nice guy to boot.

The Redeemer is the same book Harry read...pretty cool, eh? with him being in NC, me in FL.

Norene Moskalski (norene_moskalski) | 5 comments I like the Robin Cook books, not quite a series, but the main characters are often the same.

message 68: by Judy (new)

Judy Olson | 148 comments I am enjoying the Louise Penny series starring Inspector Gamache... I also like the Charles Todd books. There are two series in those writings.

message 69: by Renee (last edited Sep 24, 2013 10:10AM) (new)

Renee (rys00) | 252 comments Ah, yes. I do love Inspector Gamache.

All time faves (so far!) for me:

Sue Grafton's Alphabet Series: A is for Alibi all the way to W IS FOR WASTED, which I am reading slowly because I sense an end may be near.

G.M. Ford's Leo Waterman is dear to my heart. Who In Hell Is Wanda Fuca? is a classic. And I'm warming up to Ford's Frank Corso.

Maisie Dobbs has never let me down.

Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse: The Remorseful Day. Ok, that's the LAST book in the series. But I'm not sure reading them in order is required.

Cocaine Blues starts the Phryne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood.

And though I'm sure I've forgotten someone or other, I can't leave out--

Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins
Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak
Janwillem van de Wetering's Amsterdam Cops--Grijpstra and de Gier
Carol O'Connell's Mallory.
Jo Dereske's Helma Zukas shall be missed.
Mary Daheim has also provided two more of the Pacific Northwest's best cozy series.
Elizabeth Peters for Amelia Peabody, among others
Sharyn McCrumb's Ballad Series.

Hmmm... then there are the series featuring Sharon McCone, Aurelio Zen, and others.

And finally there are, of course, the stars of the "Classics Among Classics": Miss Marple, Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence, Lord Peter Wimsey, Harriet Vane, Roderick Alleyn, Albert Campion, etcetera, etcetera, and so forth.

My, we are blessed.

I've enjoyed I.J.Parker's murder/mystery series set in medieval Japan - the Akitada series....really a super, under-appreciated series. Parker also just finished publishing The Left-Handed God, a murder mystery that takes place in 18th century Germany...really well done and worth a read.

Alan Bradley (Flavia de Luce)
Donald E. Westlake (Parker and Dortmunder)

And long-time favorite Carl Hiaasen is sort of a series, with Skink usually crashing out of the Everglades to right wrongs.

Kate Vane (katevane) A couple more good British crime series -
Denise Mina - The Alex Morrow novels set in Glasgow are good police procedurals, she's also written two other trilogies.
Kate Atkinson - Her Jackson Brodie series is an offbeat take on crime fiction, televised in the UK as Case Histories.

Bill Love the Jackson Brodie books, Kate. Excellent series.

Gary Van Cott | 187 comments Bill wrote: "Love the Jackson Brodie books, Kate. Excellent series."

I thought the Jackson Brodie books started off pretty well but went downhill after the second book. I also thought the TV show for Case Histories mostly improved on the book. Three TV shows from the first 3 books were shown in the US as part of Masterpiece Mysteries.

message 91: by Gary (new)

Gary Van Cott | 187 comments Kathy wrote: "I really like Elizabeth George and her Thomas Lynley series. Also P.D. James' Inspector Dalgliesh."

It just shows you how different people are. I don't care for either of these series. I think everyone in the Lynley series (except the sergeant) are too pretentious. I also wonder about accuracy of the characters since the author is an American.

I find the PD James books to be too much like Agatha Christie. They are puzzle mysteries in an isolated setting. Also there is little or no character development of Dalgliesh through the series.

Have there been reviews of her new one? Haven't heard anything. I have them all. I hope this is better than the last two or three.

Have we read the last of Richard Jury, PD James series? It feels like family reading about all those characters at the Pub. I was so sorry she wasted her time on the Pemberly book.

I believe Richard Jury is Martha Grimes' character. She recently published a memoir/self-help book with her son about their mutual problems with alcohol/drugs.

I enjoy Elizabeth Georges Thomas Lynley and PD James but i have to take James in small doses as she requires more concentration to follow. I also prefer Barbara Havers to Lynley as a character.
