Till We Have Faces August Group Read

Wow. I've been really busy. August is already halfway over. I listened to Till We Have Faces a couple of weeks ago while traveling.

Who else is reading this one?

I just finished reading this book... I found myself captured by its tale! I started it yesterday, and couldn't hardly put it down till i had read it all. An amazing twist on the Cupid/Psyche story, one that I much more prefer! I can't wait to discuss with whoever is ready! :)

I finished it. Some of it was beautiful and totally captivating. Other parts were somewhat boring or weird. I didn't like the name changing all the time. Interesting book though.

Did you read the original Cupid/Psyche story (an excerpt is included at the end of the book)? Comparing the two, I prefer C.S. Lewis' version much more!

I think this book shows the depth of C.S. Lewis' knowledge of ancient literature. I remember reading Greek myths in school and feeling like they had nothing to do with me. They were just a bunch of stories and characters to memorize. But Lewis really makes their stories come alive. I like how he explores the relationships between humans and immortals in this story. I agree, Maurine, Lewis' version of the Cupid/Psyche story is much nicer.

I agree that his version is nicer. The whole time I was reading this book I had no idea it was a re-telling of the Greek myth. When I got to the end when he retold the original, it made a lot more sense. I can appreciate the whole book a lot more. Makes me want to read more Lewis!

C. S. Lewis wrote The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I bought a set of books on Nardia for my oldest son from a school book sale. Mike had wanted them, but I was the one who read them all first.

I had a hard time getting through this book. I just finished reading the last few pages, and I had tears running down my cheeks.

I just downloaded Lewis' Mere Christianity. Has anybody read that one?

I haven't read Mere Christianity.

What were your thoughts about Till We have Faces? The Queen covered her face for many years, and she never really saw herself, as others saw her, until near the end of her life. How many of us really see ourselves, as others see us. Do we run down our good qualities, or over look them?

Yes, this last Sunday in Sacrament Meeting, a woman gave a talk about forgiveness. She talked about being offended by a woman and then praying that Heavenly Father would "let her see the woman as He sees her." I've heard this phrase before and even used it myself, and yet I wonder if it's a human possibility. Probably not, but maybe we inch toward it throughout out lives if we're really trying to align our vision with God's vision.

I had a hard time getting into this book but I like the comments you gave. I agree with Rachel about forgiveness. I also think we need compliments from others but do we listen or just keep being hard on ourselves for our many mistakes.

I liked your comments about seeing others as God sees them. We need to try harder to see both ourselves, and others with kinder eyes. We need to forgive ourselves for past mistakes, and see the good that we do, and to see the good in others.

I know this is an older thread, but this is one of my favorite books! To me, it is definitely one of those books that needs to be read more than once, to really be appreciated. The first time through, you get the story, but then later when you read it again, you start to see the symbolism, and more importantly the way it relates to YOU. At least that is my experience with it. I'm going to read it again soon for the third or fourth time. :)
