I read a series for an age range around 8-14 about ten years ago, so in the early 2000s. The first one starts off with a boy (about age 15) riding around in a car that could drive itself. I think the world was ending because of heavy technological advances, so the richest people were put in cryo tanks in spaceships and sent off to find a new settlement. I'm pretty sure at one point they found a Tower of Babel, and had an epic fight on their way up. There were also people who didn't make it through transport and had translucent skin. I don't know if they were new releases at that time, and I'm fairly sure they weren't that popular. There were quite a number of books in the series, and I'm pretty sure they all had one-word titles.
