10.10. In Honor of Veterans, Military and Otherwise.

November 11 is Veteran’s Day (and also my mom’s 80th birthday!) . We most typically think of a “veteran” as a former member of the armed forces, but it can also mean someone of long experience. To consider both meanings, read a book in which a main character is either a military veteran (a former member of the armed forces of any country) or a senior citizen (roughly age 60 or older).
REQUIRED: If it is not clear from the GR description, explain how your book fits the task.

Is the book about being a soldier or about after he was a soldier (a veteran)? If it's primarily about his time as a veteran, his having been a child soldier doesn't change his veteran status.

yep - I'd say she clearly fits the bill.

Dee (austhokie) | 8946 comments Sandy - i've read Never Fall Down - its more about his time as a child soldier vice after in the US IIRC - probably about a 50/50 split

Deborah | 1667 comments The summary makes it sound as it's being told how it came about. Being taken from his family, forced labor, made to play revolutionary songs, gun forced into his hand. I don't know if his adult life comes into play.

His story is the one being told, but he isn't the author....

If not, I'll join Claire and read Miss Marple:)

The Vampyre and Other Tales of the Macabre, would this work? The Vampyre has a vampire in it and its pretty damn old (the vampire). I would read the whole book, of course.

I'm going to have to say no - one short story in an anthology isn't enough to fit the task. And, of course, there would have to be something in there showing the age of the vampire - after all, if someone is young-ish and is a "freshly made" vampire, they wouldn't fit the bill.

No, she's a teenager - the frozen time didn't make her more experienced or a veteran in life.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 754 comments Would Plantation work?

Though it begins at Miss Lavinia's wake, it flashes back to the months prior to her death and that is the story as the book blurb suggests:

Caroline Wimbley Levine always swore she’d never go home again. But now, at her brother’s behest, she has returned to South Carolina to see about Mother—only to find that the years have not changed the Queen of Tall Pines Plantation. Miss Lavinia is as maddeningly eccentric as ever—and absolutely will not suffer the questionable advice of her children.

Miss Lavinia is 70+ years and is one of the main characters.

If not, I can use it for another task - it works for two other tasks. :D

Yes, it works. I'm reading it now and at first, it was a little vague on how Strike lost his leg, but at pg 86-87, he describes why he left the military after his injury, so he's a veteran.

yes, he works - I can't think of any more exact references to his age either, but from the context clues, it certainly seems that he must be over 60.

message 34: by Sandy, Moderator Emeritus (new)

Sandy | 16893 comments Mod
From Wikipedia:

Christie is purposefully vague, as Poirot is thought to be an elderly man even in the early novels. And in An Autobiography, she admitted that she already imagined him to be an old man in 1920. At the time, however, she had no idea she would continue writing works featuring Poirot for decades to come.

of course. You don't need to get approval for what you're going to read - the only purpose for the help threads is to check on questionable books, to make sure that they fit the task.

Janet F (janet_f) | 450 comments Do they have to be fictional characters?
If not, I was wondering if I can use this book
The Signers: The Fifty Six Stories Behind The Declaration Of Independence

It has stories of all 56 signers and gives a biography of them through their deaths. Some held military positions, some were senior citizens when they signed and most were seniors when they died. All were patriots of the Revolution and were targeted by British for special punishment.

nonfiction is fine, but this one won't work. It says that it's bios of all these people - so it would not be focused on them as senior citizens or bios. The book must focus on someone who fits the criteria during the majority of the book.

A Marked Man
Military veteran is not mentioned in the GR plot description. This is a quote from the first chapter:

"This was his job. He was a hired assassin, and had been since he left the military. Ten years of playing by the rules of engagement for the Army left a bitter taste in his mouth."

THanks

For the majority of the book he's active duty, but then after he gets injured moves back home leaving the military behind. The last third or so of the book he would have veteran status.

Will this work or does he need to have veteran status fro the entire book?

1/3 of the book is fine. Just be sure to note that when you post, and note that it was approved here so that Kristi won't have to re-think it!

I assume the book meets this task's requirements?

There's nothing in the book description indicating that a main character was a veteral of the military forces, so you will have to explain this in your post. Also, I notice that it is an ebook only, so you will have to have the ebook verified for length in the ebook verification task - the number of pages entered in GR by a user is not verification. I did notice that it is described as a "short story" in some of the reviews.

That's okay, I can explain and even give a quote, it's not a problem.

And yes, Love has no boundaries event is targeted more for short stories but some of the authors (and Kaje Harper especially) has more to give us so her "short" is almost 250 pages in pdf format. And easy to prove as it is free ebook.

I have lots of ebooks as that is pretty much only I read and I get them all verified once I get all my ducks into nice row. =)

message 50: by Brian (new)

Brian | 153 comments The description calls a senior citizen, roughly 60. How rough is that? I'm trying to find a place to put The Sacred Cipher and the main character is described as being in his late fifties. Is that close enough?
