Series that you love but everyone seems to hate? Or the other way around

Agreed, they may be "Mr. Right Now", but no good for an HEA. In my eyes at least. And you're right; you can have a brooding/tough/strong/sexy guy that's a nice guy and not an asshat (love this term!). In fiction that is!!
Any woman in fiction or real life who is attracted to someone who treats them as an object or subhuman is in need of a serious wake up call. There's bad boys then there psychologically damaging swines, women should be able to note the differences, in perfect world anyway :)
Can I jump right in and say I agree about JR Ward? I love her books, and I follow and wait for them excited, but I have to admit, her books have a certain lack of plot, and what bothers me the most, a great lack of a good bad guy. I usually laugh it off and keep reading but everytime I read another series it reminds me of how much more she could've done and yet hadn't. I do think her Fallen Angels has more plot though, at least there's a bad guy there that you can count on screwing the lives of the characters :)
Everybody seems to love A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and I couldn't stand the first book.A book that I love but hasn't got good reviews in my country (Spain) is Beautiful Creatures.
Hannah wrote: "Any woman in fiction or real life who is attracted to someone who treats them as an object or subhuman is in need of a serious wake up call. Don't get me wrong I like me some fierce and brooding guys (esp in books) but they don't have to be controlling abusive men all the freaking time.

Yes! I think so too. The bad guy, Devina, was very effective, unique and memorable.
C.C. wrote: "Yes! I think so too. The bad guy, Devina, was very effective, unique and memorable. "Which is a shame, because that kind of character doesn't exist in her BDB series.
Oh, and I agree on alpha males bordering on abusive or controlling, which is another problem I have with the BDB books. I have no problems with a bit of jealousy, and certainly I like my alpha men, but it seems to me like the women in that series are there only as a lay-for-life for those men, and something to be possessive and obsessed about. It saddens me.
Ann aka Iftcan wrote: "Heather, welcome to our super secret sisterhood. We are super secret because Ward's fans can be kind of (ok, EXTREMELY) scary when defending her writing style, abilities, characters etc. So we tend..."Hey Ann!!!! I'm so happy that I'm not alone! I'm on one of Ward's lists and I swear to the Goddess, these women are so intense. Heaven forbid you disagree w/them or ask a stupid question. I mean they act as if Ward is Shakespeare, Austen and Twain! I stopped buying her books and just borrow them from the library.
Kate wrote: "OutlanderI wanted to love this book but I'm stuck at around page 200 or so... I just don't like the characters."
I think I read up to the 3rd book and then I gave up. It just got too confusing.
I don't get the hype with JR Ward's BDB. I read the first 3 cause people were all 'they get better' and I just can't do anymore. I agree, the lesser conversations need to go. I just can't get behind it. Now I do really like Marjorie M Liu's Dirk and Steele novels Tiger Eye and people don't seem to talk about them much.
i loved the black dagger brotherhood at first..but i just cant take any more of multiple POVs...
it gets increasing more and more each book....

They probably all stay together because in 90% of these books the man is metaphysically forced to love the woman for eternity as a consequence of being a shifter or a vampire or whatever the fuck stereotypical creature the man invariably is.
To answer the topic,I guess any YA series. I don't see the appeal, and in fact consider YA to ruin what might otherwise be an ok book. Its gotten to the point where I read the synopsis like so:
"Seventeen Year old (I STOP READING HERE) Special Girl always had a normal dull life but then she awakened a special power that makes her special and grabs the attention of local special vampire stud muffin Glitter Flakes who wants her because shes so pretty, way prettier than the other nasty girls who only pretend to be her friends but really aren't because theyre all jealous of how pretty she is OH AND THE WORLD IS IN DANGER BTW AND ONLY HER SPECIAL POWERS THAT MAKE HER SPECIAL AND PROBABLY A PRINCESS OR SOMETHING CAN STOP IT. THERE IS SUSPENSE IN THIS BOOK BECAUSE ITS PNR AND WE HAVE TO HAVE THAT"
I LOVE the Fallen Angels. I LOVE Jim Heron. That being said, I had to write my own ending to the series because if I have to read about another Alpha male falling in love and running away with a pure teenage virgin I am going to stab someone.I didn't like BDB because it reads like a soap opera with vampires. I didn't like Knight (seriously it is Capitol Hill in Denver not Capital Hill, grrrrr) or This Man. Piss off Alpha Males. I hated the Neighbors from Hell; the women were written to be so stupid, especially Zoe.
And I love Beautiful Bastard. That book was nearly pitch perfect; the other ones in the series, not so much.
I kinda stop reading BDB because I don't know if I like the way the story goes now. From all review I'd read, too much POV, yet people still read it. I have book #8-#10, but it still in my long TBROh.. and I don't like Fifty Shades of Grey :P
As for IAD and Dark Hunter, I still read it and enjoy it as well. Just to fulfil my PNR quota per month, lol!
Hannah wrote: "specially in the indie type books, what ever happened to the nice guys I miss them :( "
This!
I really like the selection series by kiera cass! I mean, I know there are a lot who hate those books but I really enjoy them. I am though fully aware of all the flaws those books have, I can see bad dialogs, week characters and descriptions and all that! I mean, ok, it's not a masterpiece but the idea of the story got my attention immediately. And I like where it goes. I believe that if it was a bigger book, with more details about... well, everything, especially about the rebels (what they want, what is their next move, to be more involved anyway and ect), it would be a much better book! Perhaps she is getting there.
Well, as I said I like it anyway, despite it's flaws. What do you think?
P.S. If America and Maxon do not end up together I'll be really pissed!
Sorry to see some of my favorites on here (but I totally get it!), but oh so glad to see some of my much hated books here.My 2 big ones that everyone else seems to love and I hate are: Halfway to the Grave and Fifty Shades of Grey. I dragged myself through 50 Shades of Thesaurus, just because everyone swore it was amazing. I never did make it past page 50 of Halfway to the Grave, even after 2 attempts.
I can't read the Demonica series, I've tried twice but cannot get past a certain reference to what, I guess the "bad" demons eat. Can't get into the Argeneau or Love at Stake series, barely made it through City of Bones.
I love Lynn Viehl's Kyndred, Darkyn, and Lords of the Darkyn series-so good!
I've liked BDB and Fallen Angels but respect everyone's opinions and agree to some of the comments. As for Ms. Ward's actions, I think just deleting all negative comments is wrong. Haters just hating? Sure, delete 'em! But, if a reader takes the time to offer her (or his) considered opinion, why not listen?
I do not get Christine Feehan's Dark
series. Everyone loves them, but the way those Carpathians steam over the women, really bothers me. And that says something, coming from a Fifty Shades fan. lol I feel like they don't have any choice in their destiny.
I think that opinions on Christine Feehan's Dark series have changed a bit over the years. People aren't as thrilled with the domineering heroes and heroines who are essentially trapped with this awful fate as they used to be.Feehan's writing is an acquired taste (loooong scenes with looooooooong conversations), but I have enjoyed her other series.
Kristina wrote: "I would say twilight for the one that everyone seems to hate and for one that everyone seems to love I would say the Fever series"Yes Kristina I agree. Twilight because I would not have read Sookie with out reading Twilight first and then that lead to everything else. And yep to Fever too.
It's funny that I just ran into this thread. I just read two books in a series that everyone seems to love but I can't stand and will not continue, Chicagoland Vampires series. I couldn't stand all the paranormal cliches going on and even though it's supposed to be an adult series it reads very YA, which I'm not a huge fan of.I'm sure there is a series I love that people hate, but I can't think of one right now.
Twilight seems to be the one to hate but it's still one I can open anywhere and get totally back into the story all over again. And the one everyone loves? Kate Daniel series by Ilona Andrews..I only read one but I almost couldn't get through it. I won't be reading another one.(and yes I know that's a very unpopular view)
I hate Fever series and mortal instrument series but find that many people love them. i just cant get myself to connect with the characters.
I gave up on Halfway to the Grave by the end of the first chapter (at least twice). I really disliked Cat. I read the two books in the Night Huntress World series and liked them well enough, but I just couldn't stand Vlad and only made it three chapters into his book. They're all going to the UBS the next time I go. I also can't get into Kenyon's series. I can't think of one that I like that others hate. I do enjoy Dana Marie Bell, and she doesn't seem to be too well known and/or popular.
Sandra J wrote: "I gave up on Halfway to the Grave by the end of the first chapter (at least twice). I really disliked Cat. I read the two books in the Night Huntress World series and liked them we..."Cat's a total Mary Sue. :) and Spike (sorry, Bones) is, well, he's Spike from Buffy.
I wish someone had told the author that there isn't - and never has been - a place in Australia called 'South Wales'. Every time Spike talks about his convict past I want to scream!
Not a difficult fact to check...
I’m not and never was a Twilight fan. I mean, I get it; the author wasn’t popular at school. But to write an entire book series where everyone’s obsessed with the Plain Jane and apparently it’s great fun to make blonde jokes… The final book tipped it from mild misogyny into all out nastiness.
Brown hair sure didn’t make Bella an intelligent person.

I liked Twilight for about as long as it took me to read another PNR. (it was my intro to the genre)However I really quite enjoyed the Host. I consider it Meyer's best work by faaaaaaaar.
Sonya Heaney wrote: "Sandra J wrote: "I gave up on Halfway to the Grave by the end of the first chapter (at least twice). I really disliked Cat. Someone must have told Jeaniene Frost she got it wrong because in later books she correctly called it New South Wales.
I really couldn't get into Christine Feehan's Dark series and Jeanine Frost's Night Huntress series. Although once in a while, I keep trying. :)
C.C. wrote: "Lastly, Marked (House of Night, #1) I don't even know why I keep reading this. I must be a masochist because every time I read this book I have a strong urge to pull my hair out or throw something out of irritation/frustration. For some reason a lot of readers really really like this and they think that Zoey is a really good role model. "I know I'm likely to piss 'lovers' of this series off, but I refer to this series as 'House of Slut'. I enjoyed it at first, but it's reached a point where I just plain don't care what happens to them. Live or die- I just plain don't care; I like sex, and I like angst- but this mix is raunchy, foul mixture.

The first book in Kate Daniels series is hard to get through for me. But I become a fans after the third book. LOL, I know some people are impatient, when first book do not work for them, they will not continue it. Same happen with me with FSoG, people said to me to continue read book #2 and #3 and I'm not interested.
Ren wrote: "Lorna wrote: "Twilight seems to be the one to hate but it's still one I can open anywhere and get totally back into the story all over again. And the one everyone loves? I really had such a hard time getting through it and putting it down for long periods of time, I just can't even imagine reading another one-especially with so many books out there to pick from.
Ren--I agree with you about first books. Often they are the weakest book in a series, simply because the author is having to cram so much information into them--introducing the hero/heroine, the world, the rules, the logic, the side characters, everything. So I will try the second book and, if it sort of interests me, I will give the third a try. But I've never gone beyond the third in some series, simply because they just did NOT grab me, or they didn't get any better (bdb) or the author didn't stick to their own rules. Sometimes, too, that first book is not only the first book in the series, but it's also the first book the author has ever sold (Storm Front as an example) and they are still learning their craft. So, yeah, first books should be taken as what they are--a huge labour that one should make allowances for. But if those next couple of books don't get any better--drop the series and run not walk to the exit of the book store. (Or for your mouse to click away.)

I completely understand! After I wrote that post I realized I was commenting on some books that weren't paranormal. To that end, I liked the Fever series and Outlander but I can't say that I was blown away with them.
I hate to say, because so many of my friend and family love it, but I really did not like Beautiful Creatures. It just seemed to go on and on.
This is interesting stuff. I sloughed through the Fever series cause the story line kept me going but I tell ya Mac and her thinking was driving me up the wall. One paragraph the sex is all about them.. to the point where the whole of the world doesn't exist and a few pages later Ole Mac is in her head thinking about the book while, what is his name? is doing his level best to please her from behind.
I am wading through the Black Brotherhood now.. the point of view stuff is bothersome.. I starting skimming some of it.. I didn't even have to read about Tohr and Daruis back in the day to figure it out with the present day stuff.
I could not put Fifty Shade of Gray down.. honest I was on vacation.. I did nothing but read for two days and a night.
Mercy Thompson is a special friend I go back to visit.
Night Huntress is next on my list.

Me too, Holly! Couldn't do it. Just like City of Bones. My family and friends like them so I keep it to myself :) Give me something a little more fast paced. It wasn't the premise that bothered me about these books, just the execution. Oh well, sometimes I'm picky, sometimes I'm not. I must have been picky while reading these books.

IAD
I just could not get into it. And
I think there is a reason I never felt compelled to finish Night Huntress (got to book 4 and stopped.)
One series I really could not get into was the vampire diaries. I had seen a couple episodes of the show and thought I'd give the books a go before I watched any more of the tv series. Not for me sorry.I really liked Stephen Kings Dark Tower books.
Katya wrote: "IAD

Me too. I think that one was the last IAD I read. I felt like the book doesn't give women justice and the Alpha's are borderline abusive. The sexual assaults/rape? I think? threw me off too. It sucked really because I wanted to like it and it's been recommended to me so much.
CC-that seems to be a theme in this series.I also did not care for Demonica Series and Guild Hunter Series....
Okay, I did not follow the rules....a series I loved and everyone else hated? Sorry, I reversed the rules. LOLSentinel Wars-Shannon K Butcher: Either you hated them or loved them....Romance does not rank up with romance in the Outlander series in these novels, but the world building and storytelling is wonderful. I LOVE this series.
Scanguards Vampires-Tina Folsom: Alot of people did not care for this series....I wonder why? A Vampire Brotherhood, lots of action, sex, romance and humor....It is one of my favorites.
I have to agree with Deanne also, it was the Hunger Games for me too. I read the whole series thinking it was going to get better but it never hit me. I love romance and even the ending was a big let down, they wrapped it up--like in 3 pages almost. Seriously!!!!
