Gone with the Wind

If remade into another movie, heaven forbid, who do you think would play Rhett Butler?
My first thought was Johnny Depp- then I read further and saw someone had already suggested him. I think Johnny Depp could pull it off.
johnny depp sounds good and I like Robert Downey jr. The character is suppose to be older...what about Harry Connick JR? Luke Perry.....
Rhett was 35 when the book begins. George Clooney is a bit old for it but he is talented and classically handsome. And cocky.
Rachel Weisz is talented and has the stunning looks combined with the suggestion that she could be strong, outspoken and independent. But you'd almost need an unknown again - like Vivien Leigh was at that time.

I'd be willing to give Gorgeous George a shot at it :)
Some movies just should never be redone. They are perfection as is. "Gone With The Wind" an excellent example. However, if I had to say someone it would be Hugh Jackman. I love Pitt, but he is too cute and nice. You need that touch of evil/danger.Other movies I don't think should be re-made: "The Wizard of Oz," "The Godfather," "Caberet," the original "Gatsby," and "Out of AFrica." What are other movies you think should not be re-made?

Casablanca should never be remade either!

That one will always be great and nothing can change that unless the were to actually take the original and alter it in some way, which they won't. :)
But I love seeing how someone else acts it, directs it, interprets it, etc. Sometimes you luck out and get something great but you don't know until its done.

I'm curious. Do you mind if I ask if you are over 50? I know, none of my business. Feel free to ignore me.

I love the idea of Jackman. People keep suggesting really short actors and that doesn't work for Rhett. Hugh Jackman is 6'2 and I think he could pull Rhett Butler off quite well.

I don't think so!!
While Theo James is quite handsome, he is too young and hasn't yet displayed the acting chops to carry such a role. Fassbender has, but I'd see him as more of an Ashley Wilkes.
I think this is all very entertaining, but I can't imagine any of today's actors filling these shoes. Some movies should never be redone. They tried with the miniseries "Scarlett" and it was a flop. Cast the characters, not the stars; i.e., cast Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara, not Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. It was the chemistry between Gable and Leigh that pulled this one off, as well as the spectacular cinematography. For a remake to work, you'd need oscar worthy actors.
I think that Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt would make a good Ashley, RDJ or Johnny Depp for Rhett and Mila Kunis could totally pull off Scarlett.
Leonardo Dicaprio, because he can carry that serious look and be taken serious...and still be attractive. George Clooney may not be right for the part. I just don't see him getting angry enough like Leo could. Rhett gets angry like a man.
George Clooney for sure he reminds me of Clark Gable sometimesbut i cant find any actress to play Scarlett :/
Clark Gable truly was one of a kind and to try to fit someone else into the role of Rhett Butler would be an injustice to both. Having said that, however, I vote for Tom Selleck!

Kelly wrote: "Clive Owen perhaps?"Clive Owen would be perfect, I think, as long as he could do the accent!
I would go with George Clooney because he gets better with age. If you remember in the book Rhett was the same. As for a younger actor hmmm don't think anyone could really pull it off except maybe Bradley Cooper.
That question is sacrilegious. That's like asking, "If Jesus had a brother, would he be as cool as Jesus?" LOLThere is ONE Rhett Butler. Period. There is not a man in this country or any other country who can play Rhett Butler without coming across totally different. No man can play that part now, without seeming hammy and fake-macho. Sorry, guys. Gable's got that one.
Brad Pitt (why not?) as Rhett and Emma Watson as Scarlett, with Josh Charles as Ashley and Natalie Portman as Melly
My first thought: no remake would work for me.Clark Gable, Vivienne Leigh, and all the others just made the story.
If I really had to choose: Hugh Jackman --> think of his Leopold role in Leopold and Kate, but with a bit of his dangerous and aloof side of Wolverine mixed in... Or else Karl Urban, he's go a 'naughty boy' look.
Scarlett: Nathalie Portman maybe...
Melanie: Marion Cottillard if she can manage to look insipid or else Emily Blunt
Ashley: Bradley Cooper or Ralph Fiennes should be able to act this part
There's just no one who could do it. I HATE remakes anyway, they are never as good as the originals.
George Clooney, because Rhett was already older than Scarlett in the first book, and I think George is just right. In a lot of ways... ;)

He was Briscoe County Jr., he was on Jack of All Trades, he was Autolycus on Xena & Hercules, and he was in the original Evil Dead movies & Army of Darkness as Ash. :)
Adam Sadler. Bette Midler as Scarlett.

Scarlett was 16 at the beginning of the war Angelina is way too old to play her."
Not to mention just not pretty enough IMO. Vivian Leigh had a certain look that Angelina doesn't have. Not to sound insulting, but she just doesn't look like the character. I couldn't picture it.
