Lorena (lorenab) Male protagonist, he was something like a wizard's apprentice I think. I remember there was snake imagery around some guy who would often go 'sssss' when talking. I can't remember much more other than there might have been a scene where the protagonist does some magic he wasn't supposed to do and gets caught. I might also (vaguely) recall there being a duel/fight at some point. And it's not Harry Potter.

I know all this sounds pretty generic but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway.

Thanks in advance!

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For Queen of Sorcery (Belgariad) by David Eddings Not much to go on, but it might be Queen of Sorcery by David Eddings, the second book in the Belgariad.

Cheryl | 22 comments Could it possibly be "Magician: Apprentice" from Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga? Here's a book review that might help: http://www.curledup.com/mag_app.htm

Lorena (lorenab) Re: Queen of Sorcery
I'm skimming through it but it doesn't look familiar although it does look interesting. Thanks for your suggestion.

I think the book I'm looking for is more of a children's book, it was simpler than "Queen...". I now remember that during the duel/fight ssss guy turned his staff (or something like it) into a snake. It reminded me of Moses.

I'll check out Magician Apprentice. Thanks, Cheryl.

April Ann (bloomer) | 515 comments When did you read it? As in, what year? Was it part of a series?

I found:

Magician's Apprentice by Tom McGown, 1987.

Summary: A young pickpocket becomes apprenticed to a magician who opens a whole new world for the boy, not only of magic and healing, but of kindness and adventure. Together they seek knowledge lost since the Age of Magic thousands of years before.

"Reepah repeatedly warns them that they are being followed by a creature of evil that he calls "Isst," a warning Armindor ignores until it is almost too late"

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For Interesting. The second "Magician's Apprentice" is a completely different book than the first "Magician: Apprentice"

Lol...Naruto Rocks! (Katelyn, Haku.) I don't know, it sounds a lot like Harry Potter but it's not!

Jo | 1 comments Could it be The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynn jones? Cant quite remember it but it popped into my head when i saw this question.

Natalie Pietro | 6 comments Saying that it sounded kind of like Harry Potter I think it could be "Sorcerers of the Nightwing" (The Ravenscliff Series, Book 1) by Geoffrey Huntington. I really enjoyed it and all ways thought it reminded me of Harry Pottor.

Caitlín K (inkmage) | 9 comments I have no idea if this is right (it's been a very long time since I read it), but the first thing that came to mind was Wizard's Hall by Jane Yolen.

Lisa | 1 comments Omg I think I know what book your talking about. The apprentice guy, he's carrying an important letter but when he stops in the woods he starts to forget things an looses the letters? My aunt picked it up from the dollar store about 3 yes ago and I borrowed it. I can't think of the name either and am searching for it also. I do remember it most definitely is a part of a series. Book two or three of it if I'm not mistaken. The cover of the paperback depicted snow all over with a man that was darkened out. I know it isn't much but hopefully it helps. Plz plz plz let me know if you figure it out.

Good on you for bumping this, Lisa. I hope someone figures it out and lets us all know about it by answering this topic.

Oh, and Sorcerers of the Nightwing for the link to Natalie's book.
