Laura & I are still working out what we are going to do with classics as we have an extra month. Personally I think the mods should definitely be able to vote and IMO, should be able to second and to nominate also.
Shirley wrote: "I think it's ok for us to vote, so I'd say yes!"
Yes, definitely ok for mods to vote for Fiction!

And if at this moment you all look at this post going: and why does she keep rambling on about it? ;) It's just because I thought somebody else might have missed it and accidently de-freeze thinking it was a mistake (like I did in the beginning).

I thought about having our non-fiction group reads there, as we are going to be having two at the time and with all the nomination threads and so on it might get a bit crowded over at 'group reads'. What do you think?
If nobody has an objection I would rename the 'group reads' folder into 'group reads - fiction', just so people don't get confused.

Yes, good idea Jenny - I think that would work. I think you should move the non-fiction section up the board to just below the fiction section, then they are together - what do you think?

I have also just opened a "who would like to join me in reading...?" thread in the readalong folder. I think Leslie had that idea earlier and I really liked it.

Yes, well remembered, I liked that idea too!

Ha ha! I see that has already been taken care of! :)

It has indeed :)

I'm writing up the Monthly Reads group mail - is 'The Importance of Being Earnest' the bi-monthly play because it starts on 22nd Sept?

It isn't bi-monthly but quarterly or seasonal. I am only going to do 4 group plays a year so chose the dates to correspond with the seasons (Sept. 22 is the official beginning of autumn).

I am picking myself, although probably will solicit for suggestions. It depends on how this first one goes...

No problem, I'll put in the mail that there is a play coming up on 22nd Sept.

I added the plays but also rewrote the blurb a bit. Please could each of you take a few minutes to look it over and see if it is OK or if there are changes needed. I also added some tags (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, classics)

Looks fine to me, Leslie, thanks for doing that!

1. Rowena and I would like to pick the first two non-fiction nominations with the most votes for a group read in order to provide some choice as a test run. I know that Shirley and quite a few members liked the idea, I just wanted to see whether the rest of you is OK with that.
2. Alannah brought a question up in the Ask the Moderators thread regarding how long group reads and readalongs will be open before they are moved to an archive folder or frozen.
Personally I wouldn't freeze them at all, and even though I know that in Perks group reads were moved pretty soon after the end of the group read month, I think it would be nice to leave them in the respective folder a bit longer, since often there are late-comers that will like to still be able to contribute to the discussion.
For Readalongs if we were to move them at all (which after a while might become necessary in order not to have 100 topics in one folder) maybe as a rule of thumb we could move those to archive which have last been active 3 month ago?
What do you guys think?

Whatever you two decide is fine with me :)

I agree completely with Jenny. Not only do group members sometimes finish late but newcomers to the group should be able to voice their thoughts or questions. I would also like to keep them in their folders until archiving becomes necessary due to space or organizational issues.

Great :)"
And I wouldn't freeze discussion at all as you were saying. Let's move them when we can't help it!!!

Hi all - sorry I am a bit late in replying - I think I agree with everything that's been said: I don't think any of the discussion threads should be frozen either, but I think that after about 3 months or so, we should archive the group reads for fiction, and perhaps after 6 months for the other reads (as they are bi-monthly). If they went into a separate thread called "previous group reads", then they would be easy to find. But I don't think we need to worry about it just yet - only when things become unmanageable. And the same for the readalongs - let's leave them as long as possible, as quite often, people will be inspired to read a book after the readalong has happened, and it is nice to be able to access it easily and read people's comments.

January seems good to me. November & December always feels hectic to me so waiting until after the holidays is a plus. But I am willing to go with the majority. Are you going to continue with the 3 month window for reading the recommended book?

I wouldn't worry about member numbers as judging from the 'Ask the Moderators' thread it seems that there are quite a few people happy to participate.
I agree with Leslie about January. May as well start it in the New Year, plus the end of the year is a bit hectic for some. You could always do sign ups in the second half of January and have it running from 1st February until 30th/31st of April or whenever.
Yes probably new year is the best time. But I was wondering if I could "borrow" an idea from perks and set up a "bookmark" swap for Christmass: sending a bookmark aldo over the ocean is not this expensive. But since it may take time for letters to arrive in dec I think to open a discussion not after mid november. What do you say?

I probably wouldn't personally take part as I don't collect bookmarks, but others might be interested. I think it's a good idea though so go ahead :)

I don't think that a bookmark swap ever actually happened in perks. I think someone suggested it but it never happened.

By the way.....we are 14 members away from 200 members. That makes me so happy :) *happy dance*

Laura, I see no reason why we can't have a bookmark swap, if enough people are interested. I can't remember who thought of it in Perks, but it didn't get past the idea stage in any case. I agree with Jenny, it would be best to do it at the beginning of November, to allow plenty of time!
I've had such a hectic weekend, but now that our eldest daughter has been safely despatched to university, things should be quieter!!

And hooray to almost 200! ;)
Congratulations on your daughter going off to Uni! :) Are you missing her yet? I don't think my mother missed me at all haha.

Back to Perugia :(
Tomorrow I'll have more time to have a closer look at the group: almost 200 in a month is a real achivement!!! I'm really happy we have started this!!!
And for the bookmarks swap you're right: I'll start in november

Ok, I have now sorted the bookshelf part, but still can't add the book to the group read so it has the book cover like the others do...
