Chrissie Thank you, Sandy.

Chrissie I finished No Place for Ladies: The Untold Story of Women in the Crimean War. I have read lots of books about WW1 and WW2 but little about the Crimean War. I had a big hole that had to be filled. I learned a lot and what I learned about Florence Nightingale was a real eye-opener.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A few things bothered me, but definitely a very good book. I do recommend it.

I'm really sorry for the mix-up, Chrissie. And Sandy, thanks for your help. I still struggle a lot with technology (as is apparent). I've also corrected the original post. :)

Chrissie Terri, no problem! You see I too hesitate to read The Bone Clocks

Nice review Amber!

I finished the "first detective novel" The Notting Hill Mystery (written in Victorian times) -- pretty good plot but the writing style was hard to take. Somewhat like Wilkie Collins but not as well done...

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Leslie. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Chrissie, I was very disappointed in The Bone Clocks. It started off pretty well, and the writing is good, the story just started to drag for me and I totally didn't care what was going to happen. I read 400 pages, so I think I gave it a fair shot.

Just finished How to be both and liked it very much. Here's my review:

Chrissie I had a terrible time rating Owls Do Cry.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It is definitely worth reading. If I start discussing it I will go on forever so please just read my review if you are interested in it. I knew nothing about this author before I picked it up. I had no idea it is considered a classic of New Zealand literature.

I loved your review. I've added to my shelf, but don't know that I will try reading anytime soon due to other personal issues, but I definitely want to read this one.

Sounds like my experience with CLOUD ATLAS. I gave it 1 star, IIRC. Then, as time went by I would think of it from time to time and almost re-read it. Mitchel's stories are not typical novels. You kind of have to examine them as a whole.

That is nice you liked my review. Usually writing helps me figure out where I stand with a book, but here I had a really hard time. I AM sure that it is worth reading.

GeneralTHC I've finished several books lately. A couple of note are: Tree of Smoke which I just don't know what to think of, and Bring Up the Bodies which was freaking SUPERB. I'm hoping and expecting the final book of Mantel's trilogy to be out in a few months. I can't wait!

message 3469: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 543 comments Terri, have you read/did you like Cloud Atlas? I'm curious to see if Bone Clock appeals if you liked Cloud Atlas.

message 3470: by Milou Pujol (new)

Milou Pujol I finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog (Muriel Barbery) and I really loved it!
Is funny when you read reviews 'cause they go from on star to 5. And even if I understand what people criticizes from the story and I agreed with some 1/2 stars reviews I really enjoyed it. I was so involved in charaters and their minds that it kept me immersed in the storyline till I finished.
Now thanks to Renée I started re reading Anna Karenina.

Me too, Angela! A thought-provoking book. But you know? even if it's a sharp critic to society I didn't find it sad. Maybe because of it's beauty :)

Wow, a 4★ rating, Chrissie. I am breathing a sigh of relief, lol. I was a bit worried you wouldn't like it. The blurb calls Banville's writing elegiac and that is a fine description of this very gifted author. I've read and own a number of his books.

message 3485: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Bette, which other one should I read next? Ancient Light looks interesting but the themes seem very similar with The Sea. I gave it three stars, and that means I liked it and would recommend it to others. Many others would give such a book four.

Beth | 508 comments I finished The Good Girl yesterday and I highly recommend it. Fabulous debut novel with terrific writing, a fast-paced storyline and shocking ending. 5 stars!

message 3493: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Finished On the Edge of Darkness. Unlike most time travel books, this one spent next to no time on the traveller's observations of the differences between their time and the time they travelled to, I found I really missed that part. So to me it was not so much a time travel book as it was a book about an ancient Druid curse.

message 3498: by Erica (new)

Erica | 945 comments I've just finished On the Beach by Nevil Shute. I've had this one on my to-read list for ages. I finally picked up a copy from a second hand book sale a few months back.

I liked the story and can imagine that when it was released during the Cold War it would've been pretty chilling reading. I thought it could've done with a bit more detail and padding out (was only a short read of 266 pages) but other than that it was an interesting story.

message 3499: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Bellinger | 7 comments I finished This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett over the weekend. It's a collection of her essays, and it's really lovely...in fact, I liked it more than I've liked her novels (they can take some time to get into with the level of detail). She writes about marriage, caretaking for her elderly grandmother, writing, her younger self...it's really fantastic!
