I've finished a couple of Fannie Flagg's books - Can't Wait to Get to Heaven and I Still Dream About You - and I find them really pleasing. What I call "srping novels". The "updated" version of my perfect spring novels - the whole of Anne of Green Gables's series.

Beth | 508 comments I just finished Still Alice. A great book - a must read.

My review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks so much for recommending this, Beth! I found the film (with Julie Christie) remarkable - both accurate and touching - and had no idea that it was based on a book! Obviously I have added it to my TBR shelf...

I didn't realize that it had been made into a movie but the book was well worth reading - I thought it was beautiful and touching. It had just enough science/medical terminology so that you get a clear understanding of what Alzheimer's Disease is but not too much to make the book boring and unreadable.

The characters were very real and easy to relate to.

Sent mine to Charbel ... hope he likes it

message 1707: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) just finished Exposureand it was a great installment in the Virals series. Now back to my read for review requests and Kingdom Keepers 7.

message 1708: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I've just read A Commonplace Killing by Siân Busby. I gave it two stars, which seems a bit mean, but there is far better detective fiction out there. It was for my book club, so I will have to wait a couple of weeks to see what everyone else thought.

message 1709: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I would definitely recommend My Notorious Life. Here's my review:

message 1710: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Angela, this book has caught my attention a few times over the last couple of weeks, mostly due to enthusiastic reviews, I guess I should finally decide to add it to my TBR!

message 1711: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Jenny.
I added this to my tr list a while ago and wasn't overly excited about it but decided to give it a try . I'm so glad I did as you can tell from my review . I don't think you will be disappointed .

message 1712: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Hald (coboshat) | 2 comments I have just recently read "1984" by George Orwell. without a daupt one of the best books I have ever read..not so much for the litterary quality of the book..but for the political and metaphysical content :)

message 1713: by [deleted user] (new)

@Jacob I agree, I love 1984. I also enjoyed Animal Farm

message 1714: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Me too! On the other hand Casey by Joyce Stranger almost made me want to top myself. How people can enjoy these "entertaining" novels is beyond me. They're like misery sagas with animals. After I'd reviewed it I read a couple of others as the average seems to be so different - 4* - and one said it was "funny"!

message 1715: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 387 comments I just read Seating Arrangements for book club. I liked it better than I expected to, based on its Goodreads ratings and reviews. I had low expectations going into it, but I still don't know how to rate it. When are we ever going to get half stars?!

I totally agree! I've just rated a book with two stars, but should probably have been two and a half. I felt a bit mean...

message 1717: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ I just write it in. 3.5 Kristi. Works for me.

I've just read Jamaica Inn which gets a 3.5 stars from me. Not as good as her others but a great read with fabulous atmosphere and it kept me in suspense

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I read My Notorious Life by Kate Manning after reading Angela's review. I haven't written a review but it was an 'oh wow' book for me. Highly Recommended 5★

I'm nearly finished The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro. It's not a bad read but I found myself wishing the author had included more historical fact. A deeper look into the perfume industry and it's production would have been great.

message 1721: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Finished a small book with lovely essays by an Italian writer, Elsa Morante. The essays speak of some of her childhood memories. Smiled a lot while reading the book. The title: Aneddoti infantili.

message 1722: by Diane S ☔ (last edited Apr 28, 2014 01:44PM) (new)

Diane S ☔ Loved My Notorious Life. Finished Blind Sunflowersa short book on the aftermath of The Spanish Civil War. Apparently the author died only 11 months after writing this, his only novel.

Jacob, "1984" is one of my favorites. Erasing history and press censorship are what autocratic governments practice in order to retain absolute power - true even as of today.

I hope to finish this book sometime this week. I am not drawn into it the same way as I was with Rebecca, but I like it.

Agreed!

message 1726: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) That's what I remember about Jamaica Inn too:) I expect to enjoy it again in June though, just to make sure it's not a "false memory". Laura has got me worried with her comments about "being old" in another thread, as I'm sure I can give her a decade...

It's a perfect excuse to read all my favourite books again though. Perhaps I've forgotten the ending in A Tale of Two Cities... :D

Shirley | 4177 comments I've just finished Persuasion, which I really enjoyed. It's been ages since I read any Jane Austen and it was a delight to read.

Good, I have this on my kindle - I shall look forward to reading it!

message 1735: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments I have finished The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James and I liked it.
At the beginning it was a little bit boring but the last 100 pages were full of twists. For me it is a 3,5 stars book but I don't know if I would recommend it because for other people it could be quite boring. I have read it for my "novel cure" challenge because it's suggested to anxious people and, in fact, the book is very slow and relaxing.

I liked Isabel Archer! In my opinion she is a victim that needs to be pitied. She wanted only to be free, to live a life by her own, she was a strong and intelligent woman. I was really sorry for her because despite her strenght she was also naive and confident and she trusted everyone, she really believed in honesty and sincerity. She was a good woman.

Poor Isabel! I try always to empathize with the people and also with the characters of a book. She really was in love with her husband and she was sure to be loved by him; she was too naive to see dangers or conspiracies and I don't think she deserved to have her life broken in that way. I hate such sneaky persons like her husband and Mme Merle and everybody could be a victim of such persons, it isn't easy to see the psychological games they do to break and damage a person; and when we see it, it's too late.

message 1740: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (universe_beats) | 401 comments I've finished Into the Wild and despite my reaction during the movie (seen the last summer) a bit negative because of Chris McCandless, I changed my mind during the reading and I really appreciated this in-depth analysis of McCandless's journey and personality. He has committed the typical mistakes of a young boy with a lot of ideals (typically radical), but following our dreams is so difficult that I admire at least a bit who is capable of realizing them. It's in a certain way like those kids who want to become an astronaut and then end up in a office. I can't blame who has tried to challenge life and himself maintaining his purposes right to the end and with passion.

Alejandro (alesaenz) | 18 comments I have just read Love, in English by Karina Halle. I had some ethic struggles about certain elements on the novel.

I am not sure if I'd recommend the particular novel.

But I totally recommend the author.

Just click on the title of the novel, and you'll be able to read my review. There aren't spoilers. Nothing that it's quite clear on the synopsis of the book.
