Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments Finally I have got some reviews finished!

Anna and the Swallow Man was a RL book-club read and not a success for me. I gave it 3 stars at first as a acknowledgement of it being a debut book but on reflection have revised that down to 2.5

The Stargazer's Embassy was a little out of my comfort zone - a net galley book I read to review. It surprised me and I really enjoyed it. Not a masterpiece but well worth reading.

Rotherweird was another net galley review book that I requested mainly due to cover love.
The book more that stood up to my expectations. Fun, whimsical, creative. Definitely a series I will continue. A well earned 5 stars.

I love Scalzi and was so chuffed when net galley sent me a review copy of The Collapsing Empire. As high as my expectations were, this book out did them. I love Scalzi's characters and snarky humour but I think the quantity and quality of strong women characters in this book just left me with a warm glow of satisfaction. 6 stars out of 5 if that was possible and yet another series to continue!

Paul (paa00a) | 202 comments Well, I've fallen far enough behind with the craziness of summer that I can't remember which book reviews I've posted here. So here are the last few, and hopefully I'm not doubling up!

The Penderwicks at Point Mouette (The Penderwicks, #3) by Jeanne Birdsall The Penderwicks at Point Mouette. Really loved listening to this with the family as we drove around this summer. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo. Another audiobook, this time over seven months as I went grocery shopping or mowed the lawn, etc. Also really loved this one! Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Introduced our kiddos to this one by reading it out loud for the first time. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Child by Fiona Barton The Child. Picked this up from the library on a whim, and enjoyed it. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I loved that one, Emma. What a life! Have you ever read another favourite of mine, Candy by Luke Davies? That is, again, a true story along a somewhat similar path that was made into a film with Heath Ledger.

PattyMacDotComma One of my favourite authors is Aussie Tim Winton whose recent non-fiction Island Home is an important addition to Australian literature and to conservation campaigns worldwide.
Island Home by Tim Winton
Non-fiction, part memoir, part reminiscences, part passion about how to save his beloved island - Australia - from the insidious effects of development and climate change.

Petra | 3324 comments I listened to a short novella and short story with Gwendy's Button Box.
It was an interesting look at responsibility & power.
The audio also includes a very short story called The Music Room, which was rather chilling about how quickly one's life can change.

Chrissie It has taken me ages to read One Vacant Chair, not because it is bad but because my son's family has been with me for a week. I just didn't have time! On top of that my computer busted and now I am struggling with both a new keyboard and programs.

Diane S ☔ Chrissie, hope you had a nice time with your family and understand the frustration of getting used to a new system. I too had to buy a new tablet, completely different make, and definitely a learning curve.

Yeah, this is tough. We went from windows 7 to 10! And switched to a Swedish keybard. My fingers keep typing according to the old one. The letters are not a big problem, but all the punctuations marks are changed too and they are a nightmare to stick into my head. On top of that we cannot get the spell check over to English from Swedish so every word is underlined. This with the changed keyboard is a total mess.

The good thing is that I can get the font really large and clear. A big improvement.

I use a Hebrew/English keyboard and toggle between the two languages throughout the day - sometimes mid-sentence - and I just don't understand why the two languages can't have the comma and the the full stop in the same place!!

message 11937: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Esther, NONE of the punctuation marks are in the same place! I know I will get used to it b/c it is what I used to use before I lived in Belgium. Really, all countries should use the same key board. It is driving me crazy b/c neither can I get the spell check to work! I think it thinks I am writing in Swedish. WHERE or where do you install spell checks? Is it n the browse? That is also altered. Every god damn word I write is underlined as a misspelling.

In Sweden we could not purchase a computer with a Belgian keyboard, which is crazy too.

As soon as I saw the title, I thought of Thender Bay, ON, so I clicked on the link and that's where it's set. I'm not a big thriller reader, but I'm glad you liked this one so much.
