Chrissie I really enjoyed E.M. Forster's Where Angels Fear to Tread. It is super short!

Leslie, I think it was you that recommended the book to me. Thank you!

I don't know which Forster I should read next.

Gill | 5719 comments I've just finished For Isabel: A Mandala. It's as good as I would expect from Antonio Tabucchi.

Petra | 3324 comments I finished The L-Shaped Room.
I enjoyed it, despite it being a very dated book with prejudices and outlooks we no longer have (or not as much, anyway; we've come a long way). The racial slurs were horrendous. I'm glad we don't think like this anymore. I hear that the author, 50 years after the publishing of this book, was appalled at the racism herself.

Ana Phrynne, i don't read a crime novel in a while now. That looks like a good choice. Do you recommend?

message 11559: by Canadian Jen (new)

Ana Hello everyone! :)
I'm finishing a travel book about the author's journey to North Korea, in 2012. It's a sort of a journal. Non fiction.
My first travel literature book, first one about North Korea too.
I liked it. I'll rate it in te end.
A.

Guy Austin | 267 comments I just finish a fantastic book, supposedly for children... Wonder by R.J. Palacio - This is a must read in my opinion. I could not put it down. What a great message and a fine read. 5*'s

... and the Movie comes out in November, I sure hope they have done it justice.

message 11564: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Guy , I've had this on my list for a while. I really need to read it soon!

Do it. It is great. My only issue was that they were 5th Graders... I have a 5th Grader at home. I have had four others pass through... I have not heard tell of Boy Friends and Girl Friends being a big deal in this age group. I put that aside. The story really grips you and the message... very uplifting.

Chrissie I most certainly had trouble with Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This book rubbed me the wrong way. I did not like the writing style at all.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I've got a "book hangover" this morning after finishing Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. It's poignant, uplifting and disturbing all at the same time — and a remarkably polished novel for a first-time author.

Highly recommended!

Chrissie I did like A Long Way from Verona by Jane Gardam. I would not classify it as my favorite though. This one is more for young adult readers.

I've finished two days ago Watchmen, by Alan Morre, a kind of read I generally don't even attemp: I don't particularly like comics.
I've read this because it was presented to the "Circle of the book club" I collaborate with by son. These evenings were inteded for us to present our "Book of the soul", a book dear to us for any particular reason, not really the "best"book we've read, but the one that, at the moment, is closest to us.
Well he presented this, and I have to admit that, even if the graphic novels remain not my type of reading, I can understand now why they appeal so.
This one in particular deals with "great" themes as right and wrong, personal and social moral, love and friendship, obedience to the rules ...
Interesting
