PattyMacDotComma Just finished a debut by Aussie author Anna Snoekstra.

Only Daughter is about a young woman impersonating a girl who disappeared in Canberra many years earlier.

Chrissie I am on a lucky streak, another very good book: Irena's Children: The Extraordinary Story of the Woman Who Saved 2,500 Children from the Warsaw Ghetto.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The audiobook is expertly narrated by Amanda Carlin.

PattyMacDotComma I decided to re-read a Pulitzer Prize-winner, The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway.

I still love it 5★ worth! If you picture Spencer Tracy in his Academy Award-nominated role as the old man, so much the better. He was terrific, but even without that memory, it's a wonderful story.

Albert Finished Affliction by Russell Banks. A mixed experience for me.

Paul (paa00a) | 202 comments Finished The Miniaturist for another group's monthly read and really struggled with how to rate it. Probably four stars for interest and readability, three stars for overall impression, so I rounded down from 3.5. I liked it, just couldn't bring myself to really like it.

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Chrissie I have completed Becoming Faulkner: The Art and Life of William Faulkner.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It certainly did give me trouble, but luckily the end was good.

message 10377: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I just finished listening to My Sister's Keeper, which wasn't my cup of tea. I am glad I read it, though, as Jodi Picoult's name and books seem to pop up often and now I know that they aren't for me.

message 10378: by Dianne (new)

Dianne I read that awhile ago Petra and totally agree! I like books about medical topics but am not a fan of Picoult at all!

message 10380: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished Jane Smiley's academic satire "Moo" recently - entertaining but not quite as good as her "A Thousand Acres". 4*

I then breezed through another Blandings Castle audiobook by P.G. Wodehouse - "Service With a Smile" narrated by Martin Jarvis; very fun! 4.5*

Nuria NA | 3 comments I've just finished Night, by Elie Wiesel. He got a Nobel Prize for Peace for disseminating awareness about the Holocaust. The book is a striking account of the facts and left me a bit sad and overwhelmed, although I have read other books about nazism and the Holocaust which I have liked better (especially Primo Levi's).

I think I'll go for something radically different now. Lighter. Probably Joël Dicker's Le Livre des Baltimore. I have been reading some books in French recently, so I'll keep my read French alive with it!

message 10382: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 1531 comments Finished a darkly humourous horror tale The M.D. which unfortunately fell apart in the last third as I've explained - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1877788731

Canadian Jen Just finished News of the World. A 5*****er!
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 10386: by Ann (new)

Ann I just finished Everyone Brave Is Forgiven by Chris Cleave for a book group. It's set in London and Malta during WWII and is one of the saddest, most heart breaking novels I have ever read. It's very well written and very funny and very, very devastating to read. It did remind me that there are much worse things than the upcoming inauguration of he who shall not be named here in the US.

PattyMacDotComma Temple Grandin, a difficult autistic child, grew up to become a world-renowned expert in animal behaviour. Lucky for us, she has a knack for explaining it so it make sense.

5★ for her new book, which will become the livestock handlers' bible. Fantastic!

The Small Farm Guide to Working with Animals: How to Handle Livestock Safely and Humanely.

Chrissie I found Salt to the Sea nowhere near as good as the author's earlier Between Shades of Gray.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I have to say this was a disappointment to me, but I am still glad I read it. Whether you should read it or not I don't know. Hopefully my review will help you decide. What is not my cup of tea may be yours.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I've just finished The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty. This was her second novel; it isn't as polished as her more recent work, but it displays her highly original voice. And it's always a fun to read a novel which is set near where I grew up.

Petra | 3324 comments Sandy, I'm hoping to get the The Lilac Girls soon. I'm in a long queue at the library. Nice review.

I finished reading The Light Years, the first of the Cazalet family saga. I really like this family. This book was a bit of a set-up for the rest of the series, I think. The family members became familiar to me and their personalities were presented. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

PattyMacDotComma Author David Baldacci is such a popular writer that I decided to try one of his books - perhaps I chose the wrong one.

Memory Man disappointed me so much that I gave it only a couple of stars.

But I have a question for other people who have read it. My review and the question

Great review, Diane. I'm very glad you liked it, I loved this book, too.

Leslie | 16369 comments I read the classic adventure/war story The Four Feathers by A.E.W. Mason -- I have seen the 1939 film version which is very good but the book was even better I think. The characters were more rounded in the book imo. 4*
