I didn't like this book much, Leslie. I'm glad you did, though.

Gill | 5719 comments I've added my review for Under A Pole Star now.

Here's a link to my review:

I gave the book 4 stars. I thought it was worth reading. I thought it was patchy, but I also felt fairly certain that different parts of it would appeal to different readers.

I wasn't much caring for it at the beginning - guess that was why it was easy to put aside for a while.

Chrissie I really enjoyed the last audiobook I listened to: In the Country of Men. Although I did not like the narration by Khalid Abdalla, he dramatizes a lot, others will most probably adore it.

PattyMacDotComma The Lake House by Aussie author Kate Morton is another of her very long, multi-generational family stories full of mysterious disappearances, possible crimes, and colourful characters.

4★ It is long, but true to Morton form, and I enjoyed it (but admit to some impatience).

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've finished The Masterpiece by Émile Zola. Loved it. It's a poignant story about a French painter's struggles with creativity and his painting career in Second Empire France. I can feel the author's love for Paris. 4 stars.

I quite liked it. It is slightly odd, but is an interesting story.

PattyMacDotComma Quite enjoyed Aussie author Nicole Alexander's new book River Run.

SO nice to read a story of a family of graziers (shortly after WW2) written by someone who knows what she's talking about and speaks the language.

It's a HOT January in 1951 with shearing, romance, intrigue, guns, and lots of food, which is a necessary part of rural life. It's hard work!

My review: 4 ★

Chrissie I have completed The Light Years. It is the first in a series, a chronicle about a large British family, several generations, servants and pets. Set right before the Second World War. It was fun. The focus is on the kids. I dare you to read it and not chuckle.

dely | 5214 comments I've finished a collection of short stories by an Italian author: Cardiologia by Marco Freccero 4*

A few days ago I've read the first book of a trilogy by the same author. I received also this one, the second book, for free in exchange of an honest review.
I liked also these stories and they deal again with common people who have to deal with problems like losing the job or having a child with health issues. Like in the first book of the trilogy, these people don't give up, they fight and try to go on as good as they can. The difference with the first book is that in these stories these people are bound by love, a strong and unselfish love; love for a husband or wife, for their children or parents, but also for colleagues or siblings. Sadly there isn't an English edition.

My only Italian review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've talked through messages with the author and he doesn't live far away from here (to tell the truth he lives in the town next to mine, then minutes with the car!) so we decided to meet in a couple of weeks to chat about books, reading and writing.

PattyMacDotComma No matter how famous you get or how much money you have, if your family is selfish,, watch out - especially if they interfere in your love life or choose your nursing home!

This book is since many years in my wishlist, but I can never find it (I rarely buy new books). There is also a movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1194577/) and I was able to miss also that one :/

Hahaha - I could give you enough titles for a year's worth of reading!! Do you have any preferences: romantic suspense (such as Rebecca or My Brother Michael), thriller/adventure (such as The Da Vinci Code or The Bourne Identity), traditional mystery (such as Agatha Christie), private detective versus police versus amateur sleuths?

Leslie, no preferences. I'll give pretty much anything ago. What are your favorites?

Chrissie I finished Only Time Will Tell. It is not poorly written and I picked it up free, maybe it is still free.... I have tried to explain in my review who I think it will fit best. Fabulous narration of the audiobook!
