I've been looking for these as ebooks, Petra. They sound very interesting.

PattyMacDotComma I'm a fan of short stories and was pleased to discover this collection that's just been published recently. It's The Journey Prize Stories 28: The Best of Canada's New Writers, and I'm please to say Canada is producing some imaginative authors. I must remember to keep an eye out for the next lot!

I gave them 5★ for the lot - some better than others, some getting there. Great effort!

Marina (sonnenbarke) Some of you had asked me about The Well of Loneliness, which I finished reading earlier today. I didn't like it, and here's where I briefly try to explain why: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've finished Far & Away: Places on the Brink of Change: Seven Continents, Twenty-Five Years by Andrew Solomon today. It's a great collection of travel essays, informative, deeply emphatic, often witty and written extremely well. A lot of the pieces deal with the situation of artists in places like Russia, China, South Africa, which I found particularly interesting.

PattyMacDotComma An unusual non-fiction book about two subjects that interest me (and others): Aboriginal culture and language.

4.5★ for Searching for Aboriginal Languages: Memoirs of a Field Worker by Robert M.W. Dixon, a pale (socks and sandals) linguist from England who fell in love with the place (most is in Far North Queensland) and brought his family to live here. He's now at James Cook Uni in Townsville.

There are countless stories about the people he's met since 1963 along with his linguistic discoveries. Amazing.

My review and how I came to receive the book:

dely | 5214 comments I have finished a collection of short stories by an emerging Italian author so there isn't an English edition: Non hai mai capito niente.

This is a collection of short stories by an emerging Italian author that has sent me a free copy for an honest review.
The stories deal with problems like losing a job, family problems, loneliness... The stories feel real and the characters seem very common people that we could meet during everyday life.
It was good, I liked these stories though they don't have a real end and usually this is something I can't stand. Though the stories deal with sad situations, at the end of it I wasn't sad or upset; on the contrary, I felt calm and relaxed. Maybe because there is a positive feeling, that we shall never stop dreaming and that if there is a problem, we have to face it instead of despairing.

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished Main Street which was well written but went on too long for my tastes or mood. 3*

And I finally managed to read a Murakami, unfortunately he is no longer our seasonal author! I read Norwegian Wood which is much more straightforward than the only other Murakami I have read, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (which was a relief!). Don't read it if you get upset by teen suicide though! 4*

Chrissie, the book makes me think of a series on portraits of animals that has recently been published here which I like very much. I've read Owl by Desmond Morris, and I have my eyes set on Krähen: Ein Portrait (Kråker, not sure if there's a Swedish one, no English and no audio version yet I think). I am only finding out now that I have a thing for birds apparently, so I really enjoyed reading about the Raven book.

Chrissie Jenny, the Owl book looks very interesting, by the same author as The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal! Is Desmond Morris still writing?! He must be old by now.

I too have a love hate relationship with owls. Of course they are magical but not when they poop and vomit on our balcony in Sweden. It is a terrible mess to clean up. I forgot to say, the raven book also discusses ravens in Nordic myths. There is so much more I should have said about the book; particularly their symbiotic relationship with wolves is fascinating. DO read it.

Owls fascinate me too -- I have only seen a wild owl twice (I think it might have been the same owl even though my sightings were a year apart as the location was almost identical, just outside the house we rent in Maine for summer vacation).

Messy is putting it lightly.

Oh Jenny, if you want a really good book about an owl you simply must read Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl! I gave it five stars. I absolutely loved the book.

Everyone fascinated with owls ought to read about Wesley!

PattyMacDotComma A delightfully funny 5★ ridiculous romp of a book about a poet who thinks he's lost his muse because he's married for money instead of love.

Mind you, the fact that his wife is drop-dead gorgeous, young, and charming seems to have escaped his notice. He meets the Devil, complains about his wife, and then . . . she vanishes. YIKES!

A hoot! For Python and Pratchett lovers and anyone who enjoys the absurd.
