Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Read and completed Roberto Bolano's By Night In Chile. This is my first Bolano. I have no complaints. And I will certainly look for his other books. As for this book, I rated it 4 out of 5 stars. Here is the link to my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I like Bolano's writing as well. 2666 was excellent.
The Third Reich was entertaining but not as good. It was his first written novel and not published until after his death. I suppose he had a reason for not publishing it. It did seem unfinished somehow.

Leslie | 16369 comments I had to give up on the classic The Marriage of Elinor even though I made it more than halfway -- Elinor was just annoying me too much to continue!

Petra | 3324 comments Finished Six Records of a Floating Life. What a wonderful treat to read. I really enjoyed this book.
Shen Fu was a natural writer and artist. His words make him real and alive.
He was very observant and loved to live life. He felt his grief and sorrows but they didn't keep him down. His travels through China show his love for his country.
A very delightful little book.

Joy, love Bauer, her books are just creepy enough for me.

I nearly didn't read History of Love because I was so put of 'New York Novels' by Jonathan Safran Foer (Krauss' husband).
But this turned out to be one of my favourite books. There seemed to be true love expressed and characters were real people not a collection of quirky habits."

Glad you decided not to hold her choice in husbands against her, Esther. It's hard to admit a book is good if you really don't like the author, though.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments As I have been struck down by a horrid case of flu, I've set aside White Guard for lighter fare. I've just finished What Alice Forgot by Aussie writer Liane Moriarty. It was a disappointing read, mainly because it was too long. So many pointless digressions and unnecessary details!

Me too. They are often classed together as the same genre and it wasn't that I simply didn't love his books, that they really annoyed and on some points offended me.
I read another book in a similar genre The Marriage Artist: A Novel that so upset me I couldn't bear to have it in the house.

Reading Krauss was quite a leap - I am so glad I made it.

message 8827: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma 5★ Really enjoyed Noah Hawley's new mystery Before the Fall.

A private plane crashes and could have been the target of all kinds of attacks. Owner is rich, one passenger is accused of money-laundering, one is a poor artist who paints disasters.

Great read. My review

I used my time in bed to finish another page-turner, Behind Closed Doors, a darkly disturbing psychological thriller. Think I'll sleep with the light on tonight...

I've enjoyed/appreciated everything I'd read by him, before this one, Petra. However, I didn't really get on with this one. I gave up on it, which is very unlike me.

I've only read one other by him (The Remains of the Day), which I loved.
The Buried Giant is strange. Gill, I almost gave up on it a few times but am glad that I didn't. It's a dulled story, for sure, which makes it hard to get through at times. Ishiguro is too good an author not to have done this deliberately, so I kept going and I'm glad I did. I thought it ended perfectly.
That said, my general feeling of the story is "bold but dull". Ishiguro took a chance with the style in which he told this story. That took confidence and guts.
I listened to it, which may have added to the dreamy, slow, misty story-telling.

message 8850: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Petra, one of my top two favourite Ishiguro novels is When We Were Orphans. Set in Shanghai in the 1930s, English detective Christopher Banks is bent on solving the mystery that has plagued him all his life: the disappearance of his parents when he was eight. The novel presented a much more straight-forward telling of a story for me, rather like The Remains of the Day is, which I also loved.

I tried The Buried Giant but it failed to capture my attention.
