Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I’ve just finished The Devil's Candy: The Anatomy Of A Hollywood Fiasco, a detailed account of the making of the film of Tom Wolf’s The Bonfire of the Vanities.

Devil’s Candy is a fascinating insight into the Hollywood movie-making machine, and how a group of talented people can start with the best intentions and have their project go up in flames, as it were.

Read in a day - a cluody and rainy Easter monday, with almost nothing else to do! - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.
Probably it is the very first Sci Fi book I've liked. Still I've loved Blade Runner so much that this is one of the few books from which a film has been taken that I didn't appreciate more than that!!!

So glad you liked it Laura! It blew me away when I read it.

You're not kidding.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman. A very engaging and educational read about Russian history, politics and culture in the 18th century. 4 full stars. Catherine II was an amazing woman and ruler.

I agree. Chrissie, sorry for the awful read. Sometimes it just turns out that way. So disappointing.

Well with this one I pegged you correctly. I gave it four stars too. I cannot get over that you didn't connect to Dostoyevsky and Crime and Punishment!

I mean it was so awful I would never recommend it to adolescents either. I thought the burning anthracite coal mines had to be interesting. Not in the hands of this author.

message 8018: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I've recently finished reading The Loney - which was the latest choice at my book club. I've given it 4 stars - in my opinion it deserved to win the Costa award for debut novel - it was creepy and dark and well written, one of those that leaves you thinking about it for days...

Silvie (esilvie) I finished Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family yesterday and I can highly recommend it to everyone! It took me some time to get into it, but after a while I was hooked up.

I haven't heard about Maines family before, and when I was done with a book, I started to google little bit more about them and was amazed. One of the books which leaves reader with a strong feeling, and spreads knowledge.

Chrissie, I'm glad there are books over which your taste and mine align! As for those about which our views differ, well... as you said before, we can't possibly all like the same books :)

Veronica ⭐️ | 121 comments I've recently finished two great Australian books.

Years of Stone about the early history of Tasmania and the treatment of the convicts sent there.

And Indigo Storm a rural Australian romantic suspense. Light on the romance and heavy on the danger all in a beautiful outback setting.

What was it about this book that made you like it when you don't normally like scifi?

Anna | 12 comments I've read Collective Mind last month. Not bad for those who like fiction, especially sci-fi. I respect the author's idea that all the people can unite their intelligence in one PC device and this device can generate ideas how to overcome incurable diseases, especially carcinoma.
