What have you just read? Opinions, recommendations & reviews

Leslie, that's a good idea actually, I didn't think of that.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....
I saw the movie, liked it but have never read the book. For some reason once I see a movie I am reluctant to go back and read the book.

John, see if this is easier:
- go to "my books" and your "read shelf"
- click on "view" (to the far right) by the book who's review you want to show. This will take you to your review.
- copy the URL and paste it into the post where you want your review linked. The URL will take us to your review.
Hope that helps.

It's the first book I read by him. City of Dijnns is in my wishlist but there still isn't an Italian translation.

Hope they translate it soon, dely.

You can also just get your review up on screen, then Copy and Paste the 'http' address into the comment box on this page.
Looking forward to reading your reviews in the future.

Petra, I hadn't thought of your way!

For me, it's a mind blowing.

Darnia, Your link takes us to this page, not the review:( Can you try again?

Ops...my bad. I'm so sorry
This is my thought about the book:

I also edit message #7792 as well.

I have never read any of his books but I bought Infinite Jest with my Xmas gift card.

use <+a+ +href="+yourlink+">yourtext<+/+a+> (but take out the plus signs - I just added them in so that it wouldn't be taken as a link just yet.
So you can put Leslie's review instead of the bare link.

I loved Infinite Jest. It took me months to read but it was well worth it.
I haven't read any other of DFW's books yet.

I may be dumb; where do you put 'Leslie's review' - That's one way of showing my review that I don't understand.

It took me awhile to figure out, too. You overwrite "your text" with whatever you want to display (ie: my review)
For example, this
<+a+ +href="+yourlink+">yourtext<+/+a+>
becomes
<+a+ +href="+yourlink+">my review<+/+a+>

I thought the footnotes were brilliant. Some were silly (meant as jokes to the reader) but most added background and hints that would have slowed the story down too much to add them into the main text.
ETA: the footnotes do slow the reader down a lot. I remember the 16-page footnote. I read and read that evening and hardly moved forward in the main text. LOL!

We had a discussion about that here a while ago -- some people like the tidiness of creating a link (such as you have described how to do) and others liked the bare http address form better.
Either way is fine!

I am having this feeling with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Sometimes the page has more footnote than text and they not infrequently continue on to another page.

The reason why I prefer showing the link rather than substituting words for the actual link, is that this tells the prospective reader where that link is to be found. The link itself lets you know it is found at GR. I personally do not like going to unknown sites. Maybe others are like me and want to avoid this?
Here is an example: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... It goes to the book review I have begun for Les Misérables, the book I am currently reading.
See how this says goodreads?!
Also I have a terrible time remembering the formula to use when hiding a link behind words!
I have found the easiest way to get o my review that has to be copied for the link is by going to the add book/author button on the top right of the box you write messages in. Don't add the link, instead click on the title o f the book. Then click on "My Review" found on the lefts side under the general information about the book. By doing this you get your review on a single page. It is this html address you use for the link. You copy the address and glue it in either in the fancy formula or just in your message box.

Yes, thanks for the clarification. :) It didn't occur to me to make it more directly analogous at the time, but in hindsight... In my example, yourtext=Leslie's review

Mousing over the link should tell you where the link is going to? Not that I am trying to dissuade you from your protocol. Just saying that it is possible to find where a link goes without actually clicking on it. That said, I could use the text in your review link and post my own to a vastly different site...
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/508830711

NO, mousing over the link text did not indicate the site.
Are you saying that my link here at GR could go somewhere else than my review here at GR! I am very upset and unhappy if that is true. I don't even want to know how the hell you did that. That link you gave in your response looked like it went to GR and it didn't! So are you are saying that others can fools us, as you did? Disappointing but I guess I am not surprised.
Hopefully most people don't bother being so deceptive.

Of course, that won't work if you are using one of the GR apps.
As I said previously, either method is fine or you can just summarize your feelings about a book without any link at all. I think that this topic has been exhausted for now. We can always come back to it again in the future but for now, let's get back to the purpose of this thread, which is to tell the group what we have just read.
I flew through the 3rd Discworld book Equal Rites. This is the first of the Witches series and while I liked it, I personally find the City Watch and the Luggage parts of the Discworld funnier. I give this one 3½ stars.

I just finished a pretty crazy silly snarky vampire book called An Unattractive Vampire, and the footnotes really cracked me up. It's a cute feature, if the author doesn't overdo it.
An Unattractive Vampire
On the other hand, I read a book called The Holocaust in which a third of the book, literally, is footnotes. And while I am glad he put the notes at the end of the book, some of that information really should have/could have been inserted into the text.

Ah, I think I see the problem (possibly). To link your review, before doing what Bette describes in post 7774, go to the book's page and click on the words "My Review" to get your review of the book on a separate page.

Thanks, Leslie. I forgot that vital part!
