Light and cheerful sounds like a good idea, Susan

Well, that was the plan, but now I've fallen down a rabbit-hole with The Fictional Woman, which is anything but!

Dale Harcombe | 1953 comments I've been into some light reading at present and read The School Inspector Calls!

Finished today Shantaram. I've seen it loved or hated. For me neither. Througoutly a good book, bu too long and in part exagerated and boring. Three stars

That book I loved, and it got me interested in reading about India. I can see where some would think it too schmaltzy or whatever, but I ate it up. I read it during a rough patch in my life, and I thought it was great.

A sequel was recently released, too. I'll be reading it for sure. Sometime this year.

Sorry you didn't like James Lee Burke. In truth, I didn't finish this one either. I wouldn't write him off, though. He had one book that I rated 5-stars: White Doves At Morning. And, of course, he's best known for his wildly popular Dave Robicheaux series. I think he's won 2 Edgard Awards for that.

message 7321: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ We are all so different. I love Burke, have never read the one you mentioned, Chuck. Will have to check it out.

message 7323: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Diane and Chuck, nope I have had enough. No more James Lee Burke for me. I don't think I am the right reader for his mystery, thriller books. It is more their topic than the writing per se that turns me off.

It is great that you both like his books.

message 7324: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I finished Thomas Murphy. 5 stars . My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... A new favorite!

message 7326: by Jazmine (new)

Jazmine (jaz918) I have read the who Immortal Instruments series and it was amazing. Classandra Clare is a very good writer. It is soooo good, I have even re-read this series it was that good.

Joe Ward I have finished "There in the Moon Mist by Lee Ann Ward. Imagine your life being changed and you have no way out. Your world is in complete chaos and you have very little say about anything. You are Lacy Grayson...welcome to the Reverend Way's Commune. A must read for anyone on this group.

Well, I don't believe the one I mentioned that I rated 5-stars is a mystery/thriller book, but of course that's your prerogative.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a Brazilian classic, Dom Casmurro. Interesting story about a man gaining love then losing it through jealousy. My review is here:

Tom wrote: "Finished The Chimes by Charles Dickens, narrated by Richard Armitage. 4 Stars."

I also gave this 4 stars. After reading a number of more modern books, I found myself enraptured with the lush, active language. I particularly loved the long description of the bells, tower, and wind at the beginning. A fantastic beginning and a moving story too!

message 7342: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I finished Adam's Curse: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Destiny and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sykes states the science without getting obtuse about it. He's discussing the findings with the reader. In this book, he looks at sex in all its roles in terms of reproduction: the act, gender selection, gender roles over the ages, the future of mankind through DNA. It's a fascinating subject.

I know only a little, but the little I know intrigues me. Also I love her art. Have you ever gotten the chance to see to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe? Any time I get to New Mexico, I try to go there - I love it!

message 7344: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Greg, I've never been to the museum or , but I would love it , I'm sure . As I was reading this I looked at a lot of images of her paintings online and I would absolutely love seeing the real thing!
