Chrissie Diane, also the letters should be darker than the the grayish background. We need more contrast for those people who see poorly.

Diane S ☔ Chrissie wrote: "Diane, also the letters should be darker than the the grayish background. We need more contrast for those people who see poorly."

That could be why it looks so blurry to me, if the print was darker it would be clearer for all.

message 7154: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Diane, boy do I agree. I have increased the magnification using Zoomtext but STILL everything remains blurry. When you use such a big magnification then the comment box doesn't even fit on the screen and you have to move around with the mouse to see all the text. i do not understand why they choose something difficult to read. i am very annoyed.

Do you see the word "comment" on the top left hand corner of the box I am writing in? That I can read. THAT is the kind of text I would like.

Pink Chrissie wrote: "Diane, also the letters should be darker than the the grayish background. We need more contrast for those people who see poorly."

You know the funny thing with this font change. I have great vision, never a problem reading on screens, but this is driving my eyes crazy! It's too spaced apart, the white is far too bright, but the contrast still isn't great and I end up with blurry vision!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments That's exactly the response I have to the change, Pink. By the time, I've been on GR for a couple of hours now, my eyes are aching.

message 7157: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Yes Pink, blurry and yes, Bette it makes my eyes burn. Why do they think this is netter? Some say it is different on different browsers but I do not want to gone out on a browser tryout. Chrissie, the magnification makes it worse even for me who has no trouble normally.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Sandy, the link for your review of The Awakening is not right.

I've had to go in via the book to see your review:) Great review.

Suz | 1104 comments A lovely younger read which I can wholeheartedly recommend for the holiday season: A Dogs Life: The Autobiography of a Stray

Chrissie Bette, Pink and Diane, excuse my French, but what the hell do they think they are doing.

message 7164: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Suzanne, so you like dog books? PLEASE read The Genius of Dogs: How Dogs Are Smarter than You Think. However it is for adults, not kids. I would like to know why male dogs give you their left paw and females their right. Seems their gender relates to left versus right dominance. I also want experiments on how dogs know the time so well. Think if WE didn't need watches; dogs don't.

message 7166: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I finished The Phantom of Fifth Avenue: The Mysterious Life and Scandalous Death of Heiress Huguette Clark. I am glad I chose it over Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune, but it didn't totally satisfy me. Part of this is probably due to my not particularly liking books focused on the richest of the rich. This is of course not the author's fault!

Hi Chrissie, not so much a fan but wanted to read the book my boy had read, but I'll take a look. Had no idea about the paw issue! I shall take a look!

OK, if you are not a fan of dogs then a book on the latest scientific discoveries may be too much for you.

Chrissie I recommend reading Fifth Chinese Daughter. Don't be deterred if you think the beginning seems childish.

Petra | 3324 comments I finished Ready Player One last night. This is a totally fun story for anyone who enjoys books packed with trivia (in this case, the 1980s) and geekiness. Highly recommended for its entertainment value.

I liked it myself Petra; last year I gave it as Christmas present to the son of that friend of mine who died. I think it is a nice tread also for a boy

I read it this past year and enjoyed it, though the 80s references came a little fast and furious for my liking.

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Is this the perfect Christmas book? For me yes. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Petra | 3324 comments I just finished a delightfully humorous little book with a great name: Crochet Castle.
I liked it from first to last page: humorous, quirky characters with descriptive, Dicksonian names (perhaps this is where he got the idea?) and a love triangle, triangle and lots of food & drink.

Gill | 5719 comments I've just finished reading The Sound of Things Falling. It's an extremely well written novel, with many layers, and excellent for the insight it gives into Colombia before, during, and after the period of Pablo Escobar's malign influence there. I recommend it.

Diane S ☔ I really liked that one too, Gil.

message 7189: by Susan C (new)

Susan C (goodreadscomsuec2112) I just finished 2AM at the Cat's Pajamas - not a book I would recommend - it was VERY quirky but it was hard to keep the characters straight except for the little girl (who I felt much empathy for) and her teacher. If you like over the top "quirky"...then this book may just be for you!

message 7190: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Diane and Gill, me too! Very good writing.

Petra | 3324 comments Merry Christmas everyone! May the best of the season be with you all.

I finished reading One Corpse Too Many, the second of the Father Cadfael chronicles, and really enjoyed it.
This series is full of wonderful characters, an interesting medieval setting which seems to be well researched, and an interesting look at solving murder using only logic and clues; without the help of any forensics or fingerprints.
I really like Father Cadfael and have started the third of the series already.

I just inherited 5 of this series from a work colleague and haven't started them yet, good?

message 7197: by Petra (last edited Dec 25, 2015 11:50AM) (new)

Petra | 3324 comments Yes. They are interesting and relaxing. Having just read the second book, I think this is a character-driven series where we learn more of the people, place and times as we read along. I'm enjoying the series a lot. The third book has started out really well, too.

Lucky you to have inherited the first 5 books. I have the first 6 and will hunt down the rest as I catch up to my supply. :D

I love Cadfael too. Merry Xmas, Petra. I thought the first not that good so don't get discouraged, Janice.

Janice Sitts | 237 comments Sorry, I just checked - I have 2nd/3rd, 8th, 12th/13th, 18/19 and 20

I don't imagine it matters right? i'm sure I'll enjoy them - I had not heard of Ellis before.

message 7200: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments Merry Christmas, Chrissie!

Agreed, Chrissie. The first one was good but the second was much better.
Janice, there is some history involved in the stories and character development, so reading them out of series may make a bit of a difference but I doubt if it matters as far as the individual murder is concerned.
I've also read in a few reviews that the series could technically start at book 2, so I don't think book 1 is a bit miss if you don't read it.
