I liked Atonement very much, whereas I hated On Chesil Beach - I just wanted to tell the characters not to be so stupid! I thought The Children Act was ok, but somewhat predictable.

message 6904: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) LOL Joy! 0h joy! You are the first person who has ever expressed the same feeling as I had about On Chesil Beach!

I tried very hard to get past that to assessing the book fairly - but still think it was really just an overblown short story.

Not now Chrissie. I bought the book some months ago & plan to read it sometime in 2016 (but this discussion makes me push it a bit farther down on my tbr)...

Glad you enjoyed it. I tried to read it last year. I came across the title in a nonfiction book, The End of Your Life Book Club, but I guess I just wasn't in the right frame of mind at the time.

message 6912: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 69 comments Just finished A Brief History of Seven Killings. 5 stars!!! Excellent, epic book. I can't even link to my review because I can't form coherent sentences, lol. I can see this being made into a movie, easily. Highly recommended.

I absolutely concur 1000 percent. Best fiction book I've read this year easily.

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 243 comments Just read Dog!: You'll Never Look At Your Dog the Same Way Again. which is not at all the throwaway read you might think from the title and cover. I loved this novella about guilt and redemption.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments @Diane I can always rely on you almost every day for a review to read. I don't know how you do it. My reading has slowed over last few months.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition | 572 comments Chuck and Sandy, your praise of the book A Brief History of 7 Killings made me put it on my To Read list for February, since Bob Marley and I share the same birthday (!)

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 1533 comments recently finished Bark: Stories Bark Stories by Lorrie Moore . Still not 100% sure what to think of this one. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Read Chuck's review as he explains what the book is like without giving anything away. As long as you're not squeamish about violence, sex, drugs, salty language you're good to go! The Jamaican patois is easy (as long as you're doing a paper copy). I imagine an audio book might take a little more work. It's just basically bad grammar english with a few slangs thrown in. And after you spend a few minutes looking up the slang words via Google you're work is done. It's quite a ride!

Lol Bette. Sure mine will slow as we get closer to Xmas.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition | 572 comments Thanks Sandra, I admit it would be easier to skim over the really graphic violence if it got too much while reading, but I think I would like to hear the Jamaican accents, so I'll probably listen to the the Audible version.

Did you see that they are making an HBO miniseries from this?

That would be cool. I always like to see how these things come off on the screen.

Regarding the book, I've heard comparisons to a show called THE WIRE. I can't ever remember having seen it.

If I remember correctly The Wire was based on Val McDermid's book by the same name. I saw it and it was good.

I'll read my copy before I read your review, Sandy.

GeneralTHC Finished 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea. I really enjoyed it. I think most people would. It's pretty breezy read, but powerful if you really consider the man's struggle. My purposely vague review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 6948: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I just finished Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.
I find this generation of artists & writers frustrating and fascinating at the same time. They were so spoiled and self-involved that (to me) it's almost as if they lived outside the world the rest of us live in. These are people who couldn't survive in "normal" situations such as we live in everyday.
On the other hand, that life of entertainment, fun "me" has its appeal (although I wouldn't want to spend a lifetime there....maybe a week or two :D)
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 6949: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Petra, you have expressed exactly why I have put off reading the book. Their life seems so terribly foreign. Party, party party and drinking galore. I guess some people lived like that and some still do?

Didn't this put you off?!

message 6950: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments Yes, it did, Chrissie, and it's why I'm really ambiguous about this circle of "geniuses" who traveled around Europe in the 20's. They created a lot of wonderful art and books, etc. but I truly wonder what kind of human beings they could have been. They lived so separate from the rest of the world; in their own little bubble.
It might be a fun lifestyle for a week or two, a big break from all the cares of the "real world" but I certainly wouldn't want it for a lifestyle.
