Yeah Baldwin's writing is fantastic and the discussion here was too. Look at all the people who discussed it and how high we all rated it. It didn't leave anybody untouched. Has any of us given it less than four stars? Don't think so.

message 5315: by Pink (new)

Pink Heather, I agree Giovanni's Room is my favourite book of the year so far as well.

Chrissie, you're right, only Sandy rated it 4 stars, while the rest of us gave it 5, (though I think Mary is yet to finish) There can't be many books that get such a strong reaction from us all.

Chrissie I have great ones lined up. I cannot complain. ALWAYS, or at least usually, I think the books I plan to read will be marvelous. Sometimes I am testing new authors/genre and then I am not sure.

Just finished a nice short stories collection by Luis Sepulveda. All about the '70s in latin America, with all revolutionary hopes. Liked it. A bit "amarcord" - for those who know Fellini

message 5345: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I just finished reading Palace of Desire, the second book in The Cairo Trilogy. I'm really enjoying these books. The author has a lovely way with words and can really paint a scene.

message 5346: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Finished reading a powerful novella Reunion: A Novella. The setting for the novella is 1930s of Germany and the protagonists are two sixteen year old boys (a Jew and a German Protestant Christian). How history plays havoc in destroying their lives and friendship is the main theme. Four stars.

message 5347: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I have started The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and like it so far. Lines like: "Can you fake happiness?" or
Marriage meant "you could believe int he future and the past." The word past is what is interesting. Keep in mind this follows WW1.

Starting with this until I can get Circling the Sun by the same author.

I've read in a day, yesterday, The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, a contemporary Indian writer. I've found it incredible: how people in India are still treated, almost like slaves. I couldn't belive it, and yet I think he's right. And, as soomeone pointet out to me, this maked people terribly "un"scrupolous in their moral behaviour. Terrible terrible book

Laura, I thought this book portrayed the plight of the poor well, too. I also enjoyed the humor the author put in. I also gave it 4-stars and found it well-written and entertaining while highlighting the situations within the caste system.
