dely | 5214 comments Finished Idris : Keeper of the Light by Anita Nair. I rated it with 2* only because I was able to finish it but it was so boring! It's a book full of adventures and trips of a Somali merchant who travels in India during the 17th century so the premise was very interesting but I didn't like the writing style and everything was so boring: the description of the characters, their trips...It could have been much better. Perhaps the fault is also of the translation because I had to read some sentences twice before understanding what was written.

That is a shame, Dely. It does sound like it should be fascinating

Yes, the premise was really interesting and I like to read about India. It was really dragging despite the many trips and adventures. Perhaps read in the original language it is better.

Pink I've recently read and loved Not My Father's Son: A Memoir, which I thoroughly recommend. Here's my 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also recently finished Cry, the Beloved Country which left me with more complicated feelings. 3 star review here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

dely | 5214 comments Just finished a very short ebook with four short stories by an emerging Italian writer. In these days it is free on amazon if some Italian member is interested (http://www.amazon.it/stagione-fredda-...).
It's La stagione fredda: I racconti dell'assenza by Silvio Donà. I think it deserves 3*: I like his writing style, I like the topic of this book which deals with the loss of a beloved person.

message 5211: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie You simply have to read:Whose Names Are Unknown

That so few people know of this book is a real crime. Shame on Random House!

message 5212: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I just finished The Keep from F. Paul Wilson. It was an excellent horror novel. Shades of early King, Koontz, McCammon. If you've ever liked that kind of thing you should check it out.

message 5213: by Pink (new)

Pink I've finished The Girl on the Train and while it was a fast paced read, I should probably say here that this type of thriller is not my sort of thing.

Chrissie Nope, Someone did not work for me.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

And the funny thing is, I have just picked up Kent Haruf's book Our Souls at Night: A novel, and this speaks to me immediately. It too is about ordinary people.

I just finished an amazing book, Little Bastards in Springtime: A Novel, about the siege of Sarajevo in 1992 Bosnia. Very powerful and very well-written. Here's my review:

Ann The Cellist of Sarajevo is another very good book about the siege of Sarajevo.

message 5222: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 387 comments I finished The Martian this morning before work. I loved it! I am usually hesitant to read 'space' sci fi, but the author did a great job with the technical information. I laughed out loud, I held my breath, I teared up. This is one of my favorite books of 2015 so far. I'm very impressed with this author!

Yep. A good narrator can do a lot for a so-so book. And a bad one can ruin a good book as well.

Chrissie I really enjoyed Our Souls at Night: A novel by Kent Haruf. It is horrible that he has died. This is an author that I would recommend to just about everyone.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 5227: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC Finished my King book: Finders Keepers. The first half of it was five-star stuff. The second half, not so much. Still though a fun read for fans.

Chrissie, Kent Haruf is one of my favorite authors. Have you read his other books, starting with Plainsong? I highly recommend them.

message 5230: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Yes, Petra, I have. They have all gotten four stars, but somehow I feel Our Souls at Night is his best.

message 5231: by Petra (new)

I finished listening to Revival by Stephen King. The ending so terrifying, it was a bad mistake to listen to it at bedtime.

Jen, I also just finished Our Souls at Night, a bittersweet and, I agree with you, simple read. Here's my review:

GeneralTHC I read about half of Our Souls at Night yesterday--I just have SO MANY books going!-and am really enjoying it so far. I was telling someone about it and they told me they saw a movie with that premise (view spoiler). Anyone ever heard of such a movie? I'm doubtful.

OK, I will have to read it. Last week I put it on my wish-list. After reading biographies about Hemingway I got so annoyed that I had to take a break from him. I have cooled off and so will read McClain's. The author has a new book coming out soon that looks good: Circling the Sun. Interesting, huh?

You have to admit it is hard to put this one down. For me it is his best. Maybe it is the topic that speaks to me, it being about older people? I like the message.

message 5245: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I stayed up way too late last night listening to my audiobook of Memory. I have been enjoying this sci fi series very much but this is the first time I had tried it as an audiobook -- Grover Gardner did a marvelous job with the narration. While I liked it very much, it would NOT be a good starting place for this series.
