Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Hey Jenny, I read Great Expectationsduring my freshman year of High school. I liked it but my favorite dickens story will always be A Christmas Carol. ^_^

I've seen them too! I'll have to read something more ...

I've just finished The Belly of Paris and I throughout recomand it; I gave it four start but I'd like to have an half one to add: it's not a five for the - too - many lists of foods and things: he wanted to underline the wealth but when it's too much it's too much!!!

That reminds me: I entirely forgot to rate it! LOL. I agree Laura, I enjoyed it most of the ones I've read so far.

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments I finished The Great Gatsby for the second time. First time I read it was a few years ago, I wasn't able to fully enjoy it but this time I was completely absorbed by it. What's there to say? How do you describe one of the most beautifully written books of all time?

message 457: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments I loved Gatsby too Charbel :) I will re read it again soon

Funny you should say that, I was thinking the other day that I would like to read it again soon, especially after I saw the recent film. I don't re-read many books, but this one I think is worth it.

message 459: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I just read In the Shadow of No Towers. I am torn on how to rate it. The story is scattered and chaotic and only snippets of happenings.
On the other hand, I expect that it's a good and true reaction to what New Yorkers felt in the days following 9/11. Everything and everyone's life is so upside down, in turmoil, chaotic. That's how this story reads.
The graphics are really good. I especially liked the parts where frames are upside down. It really got across that feeling of being thrown around after this event.
I would recommend this book but with a caveat that its chaotic with no smooth story line or ending.

Emma | 124 comments The last book I finished was The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and I recommend it 100% to everyone. Such a beautiful story, but keep your tissue box nearby - it's a tear jerker.

I finished it few months ago but the story and characters are still so vivid in my head, it's amazing how simple yet well written this book was!

Other than that my real last book was The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I'd recommend it without second thoughts to all those who want to have a short trip back to childhood :)

message 465: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I liked ocean at the end of the lane too. ^_^

message 466: by Amber (new)

message 468: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 387 comments Finished Oryx and Crake for the third time. I obviously recommend it since I've read it that many times! I re-read it in preparation for MaddAddam.

Kristi (kristilarson) | 387 comments And now I've finished The Mystery of Edwin Drood. I think I was enjoying this book more than any other Dickens that I've read, and it just stopped. Sad.

If you liked Edwin Drood, you will probably like Bleak House. Some people consider Bleak House one of the best mysteries ever written...

message 471: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I just finished The Sea and The Silence. At first I wasn't enjoying it that much - the writing was good but I just wasn't that interested in the plot. However, the second part of the book really caught my interest and now, in retrospect, I think the first part was quite cleverly done. I had seen it shelved as a romance, and it certainly had romance in it, but it really is the story of a woman's life, told in reverse.

I think fans of contemporary novels in particular would like this historical fiction.

Thanks Leslie, I'll give it a try someday. I downloaded it to my Kindle. I think two Dickens novels might be my limit for one calendar year, so maybe 2014:)

You read books with such pretty titles Amber!!! I'll have to look for this as well!!!

message 478: by Amber (last edited Sep 25, 2013 08:41AM) (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Laurat. It was a pretty good read about a book club done with 4 friends who try to help each other out through their problems. I enjoyed it with the end of your life book club and the unbearable book club for unsinkable girls which I read all of them as ebooks through the overdrive reads system through my local library.

I have to say the plot sounds good, because just the other day I was thinking why I haven't come across a book like this before. It just seems like such an interesting thing to read about.

message 482: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Charbel and thanks for being a book club buddy goodreads friend too. I hope you enjoy checking the book club out if you get a chance with the other two book club reads I listed that were pretty good. the end of your life book club is pretty sad though.

Christine McIntosh (queenxine87) Cousin Bette was really good. Definitely recommend if you're interested in early 19th century (1800s) Paris. It's a novel about getting revenge and also the fine line between love and infatuation.

I really want to read this but it will have to wait until 2014...

message 487: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 387 comments I have just finished The Elite. I definitely did not like it as much as the first book in the series, but I will still read the third book when it comes out. (I wish that I didn't like this series, it isn't something that I expected to like.)

message 488: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccaemma) | 1 comments I just read "the perks of being a wall flower". I thought it was great!

message 489: by Vicann (new)

Vicann | 30 comments I've finished reading The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. It took a few hundred pages for the story to get started (it felt like a lot of scene setting) which I expected as some of the reviews on here say that. But having got to that point, I didn't really care about the story!

message 490: by Charbel (new)

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments Rebecca, I enjoyed it too, it made me wonder why I haden't read it before.

Vicann, it's a shame you couldn't get into it, it's such a beautiful story.

message 491: by Emma (new)

Emma | 124 comments Just finished The Casual Vacancy by the amazing Miss J.K. Rowling and it was fantastic. Don't go into expecting a Harry Potter style story, it was anything but that. Gritty, honest and filled with a bit of everything from the 'dark side' of reality I didn't want it to end.

4/5 ****

I liked it a lot as well, even if generally don't like changes. But after HarrybPotter either she changed complktely or stopped writing!

message 495: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've finished Middlemarch which I would highly recommend to anybody who is into classics and hasn't read it yet. I've hardly ever been so annoyed by a main character for the beginning chapters ever, yet have really come to like her during the course of the book. What an amount of messed up relationships!! And what a cleverly written, empathic book! I will surely pick up another book by George Eliot soon. Any ideas which one to read next?

message 496: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 243 comments I read Anansi Boys last week and thought it was brilliant. It has a convincing plot, humour, real wickedness and real human goodness. I think I am a convert to Neil Gaiman.

message 497: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) I need to read more Neil Gaiman, just to clear my back log first...

message 498: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Neil Gaiman is a good writer. I enjoy his books. ^_^

Kelly (and the Book Boar) I just finished Doctor Sleep by Stephen King and would absolutely recommend it.

If you're looking to get your kids interested in Gaiman, his new book Fortunately, the Milk was adorable.

message 500: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Awesome Kelly. I have yet to read that one but it is on Hold at the library and want to read Fortunately, the Milk too.
