Welcome / Member Introductions
If it's any consolation, when my parents moved here as a young married couple, my aunts and uncles and grandparents moved here as well - practically every member of my mother's family! It's a great country. :)
Welcome Faye! You had me wrapped around your finger the moment I spotted "Crime and Punishment" in your favourites bookshelf (though 'Canada' would have probably already done the trick) ;)Feel free to jump right into discussion (or our Fiction poll...only one day to go)

Hi Faye, it's lovely to meet you. I'm Alannah, it's lovely to meet you.

Hey faye welcome to the book club. I'm amber. Feel free to join in with any of our discussions and group reads/readalongs. I'm hosting an edgar allan poe readalong next week on the 20 for all hallows read for halloween through the 31st so if you would like to join me in the readalong with some others, you are more than welcome to. :-)
Yep it is faye. If u want to join, I made the thread in the readalongs section of the book club. Feel free to join in. We'll be reading starting on the 20 through halloween of The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales. I am doing the readalong with friends on facebook/the book club. It is the first readalong I've ever hosted and done so am excited and nervous!
Hello everyone, I'm Pamela. Because of some seriously bad karma, I currently am stuck in FL. I love to read to escape my life. I have been reading mostly classics. I generally like anything well written.
Amber wrote: "Welcome to the book club pamela! :-)"Thanks so much Amber. Read any good books lately?
Yeah. Ghosts and Haunts of Tennessee was pretty good pamela. It told of what places are haunted in tennessee, my home state, and it was an interesting and informative read. The legend of sleepy hollow was good too. I started on The Extra-Ordinary Princess tonight which is pretty good so far but will put it on hold when I start my edgar allan poe all hallow's read readalong in the book club and with friends on facebook next Sunday. We'll be reading and discussing the collection the fall of the house of usher and other tales starting on the 20 through halloween. Should be fun. This will be the first ever readalong I've ever done and hosted.
Amber wrote: "Yeah. Ghosts and Haunts of Tennessee was pretty good pamela. It told of what places are haunted in tennessee, my home state, and it was an interesting and informative read. The legend of sleepy hol..." Poe is my favorite author! The readalong sounds like fun. Have you ever visited any
of the places in the Ghost and Haunts of Tennessee?
Welcome Pam! Feel free to jump right in!Btw: I spotted that you are currently reading Eleanor of Aquitaine: A Biography is it as interesting as it sounds?
Welcome Pam! I also like classics - and generally well written books! And main ly for the same reason: to fly away!!!!

Thanks!Does it sound interesting? I didn't know she existed until she popped up in my genealogy. I was drawn to the name. It is very interesting to me because of that. It is weird reading about people to whom you know you are related. I want to know how her family ended being at war with one another.

Hey pam. Yeah of the ones he has mentioned in the book, I've been to cumberland caverns, the ryman, the grand ole opryhouse, gaylord opryland hotel, and opry mills mall. Those are all I've been to that are haunted. I even live in a haunted house too lol. Hey pam, if you want to join the edgar allan poe readalong, I made a thread of it in the readalongs section of the book club so feel free to join in. We start october 20 through halloween.

No problem Pam. I can't wait either! I'm doing another one in December of City of Bones but I hope to do well in our All Hallow's Read poe readalong first. Am excited and nervous about it.
I'm a retired high school English teacher in Michigan, and I'm very happy to find such a welcoming group of people :-)
Thanks, all--and Jenny, I liked it very much, but Death with Interruptions still is at the top of my list :-) Just to check--I'm getting this "Group Rules" pop up with every single post! Is that happening for others as well? I wrote to the Moderators in "Ask the Moderators"; they just need to go into settings and check to have the rules shown just to new members on the first post.
Julia - I think one of the mods said that several new members had joined and then proceeded to self-promote their books, so the rules were reset to come up every time. Not sure if this is just temporary, but no doubt one of the mods will say.
Hey there, Jean--I've never seen it done this way before, and it's very distracting. Self-promotion is a big no no in the other groups I'm in as well, but either the moderator deletes such people from the group or offers an "Authors" thread if they wish. Thanks :-)
Well one of the other groups I'm in (and I think you may be too!) does it now and then, just as a reminder, and then takes it off again. I agree it's much better without as sometimes you need to edit your post and can't if you can't see it! On the other hand, if members won't play by the rules I can see that it might be necessary.
Hmm, if a member isn't playing by the rules after being asked politely to respect the other members, the moderators can remove them. I've never seen this happen in our other group, but then I'm new.I'll try to stay, but the rules say "we believe that people who love books can't be in need of a lot of surveillance". This pop up feels like someone is watching over my shoulder!
Things change all the time, don't they? I've never personally welcomed anyone to a group as when I first joined Goodreads that task was thought (by all the groups I knew of) to be a moderator's job. Now I've noticed in all the groups I'm in that fellow members welcome new ones too.So welcome, Julia! And I hope you'll stay. I find both of the groups we have in common are great groups, with mods who are very on the ball and respond quickly to what you say, as has happened here.
Yes, BookVipers also put up the rules when there was a spate of spammy posts. Elizabeth (mod) took it off in that group when I asked about it, although I wouldn't expect that to happen straightaway if there was a current problem.
I think Jenny and Laura both try to use this as an interim warning - a sort of yellow card - before having to throw somebody out of the group. As such I'm happy with it. I'm assuming I don't notice spammy posts precisely because the mods are doing such a great job!
Thanks, mods! :)
