You're really welcome Kerri! We liked people who generally disagree!
One of my favourite film director is the italian Nanni Moretti who in one of his best film, maybe his best of all, "Caro diario" goes around Rome in a "vespa" (italian type of motorbike, famous in Roman Holiday becaused used by Gregory Peck and Audry Hepburn); at a certain point he stops at a red light next to a very expensive sport car - something like a Porsche or a Maserati - and tells the driver "I think I'll always agree with a MINORITY of people". The light turns green and the driver drives away looking sort of pissed off.

Jean wrote: "LIKE Laura! Long live the individual."

Actually the whole quotation runs like this "Io credo nelle persone, però non credo nella maggioranza delle persone. Mi sà che mi troverò sempre a mio agio e d'accordo con una minoranza..." [I belive in people, not in the majority of them. I think I'll always feel at ease and agree with a MINORITY of people"]

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Welcome Valetta! I couldn't help but notice that you've added the German edition of the Harry Potter book you are reading at the moment, when driven by curiousity I was snooping through your bookshelves ;) Are you actually reading it in German?

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Oh 'autoinvitarti'!! Love that word. I will 'autoinvitare' myself to as much things as possible in the future;) (and Valetta, we're very glad you did)

Isn't it a nice word? I love it!
To practise with it Jenny why don't you "autoinviti" yourself to Italy? Last month or so to see my splendid huge house!

message 365: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Oh I will Laura!! In fact I am already trying real hard to think about the best time to do it;) I might not be before February/March though (which is the exact time I was in Rome two years ago, having a 'jewish artichoke' in the loveliest cantina in the jewish part of the town and stumbeling over Caravaggios and Bellinis everywhere) Could you arrange for some spring to happen by then? ;))))

LauraT (laurata) | 14377 comments Mod
"I carciofi alla giudia" great!!!
Spring will be coming in march, in Rome at least; Perugia can be still cold, but you never know!
I hope to have moved by then, even if things look more complicated than at the beginning, but as I was saying, I'll a spare room also in my "supposedly" new house. So ypu'll be wellcome whenever you like!!!

Yes, I'm actually reading it in German, I always wanted to learn German so I took an evening course for three years. Unfortunately I've not time to attend it anymore but I don't want to forget everything I learned and I think that reading can be a good way to do it! I decided to start with Harry Potter since I already read it in italian and english, so I thought it could be easier as a first attempt. I've already read the first book of the series and now I'm midway through the second, even if I had to abandon it for a while :)

Nice! It is hard to keep a language fresh if you don't have the chance to speak it regularly, so if ever you need refreshment, I am at your service für eine kleine Unterhaltung auf Deutsch ;)

Hi y'all. I'm Aaron, an avid reader from Nova Scotia, Canada. I'm 43, love to act, write, hike, sail, screw, paint, collect coins and ducks, listen to great music, watch great films and spend time with my friends and family here in our little coal mining town, Sydney Mines.

I'm a HUGE Stephen King fan. Read Joyland and Dr.Sleep. Both outstanding.

I'm also random and a sarcastic bastard at times, so I beg your forgiveness up front.

:)

message 377: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Welcome Aaron! No need to tell you to jump right in as you have already which is great, just help a dim German out here: You collect coins with ducks? (google tells me it's a Canadian speciality) Or coins and ducks? In which case I really want to know why and how many and in fact I find the idea so charming I kind of want to go off and build a little pond in my (non-existent) back yard and start a little collection of my own.

I've never managed to really get into Stephen King personally (but also haven't tried to after "Carrie" and "The Girl who loved Tom Gordon") but we have a small but dedicated Stephen King fan base here that I am sure you'll meet pretty soon. If I am not mistaken there's a readalong for one of his books in December too.

message 378: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Jenny! Why waste time with formalities, right?:)
I collect rare coins and silver, wooden and gold ducks. Some have feathers, others just shine.
My Dad was in Germany when he was in the army back in the 60's. He had a great time there.

The Mallard is a Canadian symbol/specialty duck. We live near a fabulous duck pond and visit them often.
I have over 30 ducks of varying shapes and sizes. I think building a duck pond would be a terrific idea, and in your own back yard. Not many think of ducks as collectibles, but I'm proud of my collection.
Oh, you have to read some King, Jenny. He's outstanding!

Look forward to meeting the King fan base.

Great to meet you!!

Enjoy the group Aaron and look forward to chatting about Stephen King.
I made a massive start on under the dome then the TV program started so I put it on my to finish shelf and cracked on with other books. So as well as wanting to finish that one I have 11/22/63 on my bookshelf waiting to be read.

Welcome to the group, Aaron! Hope you enjoy all the different discussions and group reads. I have read only one Stephen King book, "Under the Dome", but would like to read some more - like Tracey, I have 11/22/63 to read at home.

@Tracey

Thank you, I will. I look forward to discussing King as well. "Under The Dome" is one King book I have yet to read. 11/22/63 is a modern masterpiece of literature. Be sure to read Pet Sematary, Gerald's Game, It, and Rose Madder. Then Joyland and Dr.Sleep...and also The Shining.

@Shirley and Laura

Great to meet you both and look forward to going KING on all of you. Everyone should read the KING!!:)

message 394: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Hi Trish Marie, and welcome! Hope you'll like it here, and please feel free to jump right into the discussions ;)

Just a side note: we - after thinking about it for quite a while - decided on a rather strict no-self-promotion policy. I know this can be frustrating for people writing themselves, and this is not at all meant to stop you from talking about your love for writing, it is merely designed to stop people from using this group as a platform for self-promotion - a line you haven't crossed, don't worry, I just felt I should point it out.

So again: welcome!! And please forgive my lengthy explanation.
