message 3322: by Klela (new)

Klela Hello, I'm Elena, I'm 31 and I'm from Italy!
Even if the italian community is pretty big on Goodreads, I'd like to practise my english talking (or better "writing") about something we all love: books!
I'd like to apologize in advance if I make some mistakes in english, and please feel free to correct me whenever you like!
I like reading basically everything, it just has to have a captivating story and well defined characters! I try to read in english as much as i can, but most of my readings are in italian. I hope the group reading in here will bring me to read more in this fantastic language.

Welcome, Klela--it's great to have you here. Overall your English is good- You seem to have a good grasp of semantics and grammar. Because I am Canadian, I also spell practise with an s, so if you see it spelled with a c, that's American spelling; I suggest you stick with whatever spelling you've learned since you live in Europe.

Since you asked, we capitalize the names of languages and nationalities in English :). If Italian is like French, then you probably don't do that in Italian, but here they are considered proper nouns. (See how I used them a lot to illustrate ;) I am doing this with a kind smile so hope it doesn't come across unfriendly).

I'm looking forward to getting to now you.

Welcome Klela! Glad to see the "Italian Faction" grow!
And this is a really glood place to improve your English - even if members are usually too polite to stress your mistakes!!!!

And welcome Yoshita! Where are you from?

There are a lot of discussions to go through but i will join soon!

message 3335: by Arielle (new)

Arielle Morin (livingpagebypage) Hi everyone! My name is Arielle and I'm 27 years old. I love goodreads, and I'm excited to start participating in some of the groups. I was a very avid reader as a child and teenager, but for whatever reason I went through about a 5 year hiatus where I just stopped reading. I read the occasional non fiction book, but I was having a hard time finding books that appealed to me. A few months ago I just got the itch to start reading again and I'm so upset I let this amazing thing slip from my life! I've been rereading some beloved old favorites, and thanks to youtube and goodreads I have a growing list of books that I can not WAIT to start!
I love everything about reading. The community, getting lost in a different world, learning and developing through reading, the coziness of it all....anyway, some favorite genres of mine are thriller/suspense, historical fiction, contemporary, non fiction, and true crime. I want to get into more horror and sci fi, and I'd love to give fantasy a shot. It wasn't my cup of tea as a kid, but I'm always evolving and I want to read as much as possible..

Thanks for reading!

Welcome Arielle.
Each of us has gone thrrough periods when reading was not so important - or possible! - as usual.
In here I hope you'll find, as I do, so many ints and suggestions that it is really difficoult not to find something that suits you!!!

message 3338: by Karin (new)

Karin Welcome, Arielle.

Having a reading hiatus is quite normal, as LauraT said. I hardly read anything when my kids were little, and even in the past few years I've gone through reading slumps where nothing much interests me in the way of books.

Also, it's very true that our tastes change and/or modify as we get older.

message 3339: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Arielle, so happy for you that you have rekindled your love of reading! This is a fabulous group of people and I'm guessing that you will enjoy the group.

message 3340: by Ana (new)

Ana Hello everyone! :) I'm Ana, from Lisbon - Portugal. I love reading, but I'm new in book clubs! I've been in Goodreads for a while, but inactive so far. Surprisingly, I also went through a reading hiatus some years ago. Fortunately, I was able to change that! I'm fond of Classics, but I also enjoy good thrillers, crime novels, mystery, historical fiction, etc. As long as it pleases me, I read! Hopefully, a reading group will give out good recommendations and make me read more. It's always nice to talk about books with somebody else.

message 3341: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi Ana, welcome! I'm sure you'll love this group, and I think it'll help you get past your reading slump, since we have so many recommendations, group reads and book discussions going on.

I visited Lisbon some years ago and found it wonderful :)

message 3342: by Ana (new)

Ana Hi Marina, it pleases me to know you enjoyed Lisbon :) City of culture. I've been slacking a bit on the Classics, so i'll use book clubs and reading groups to improve myself on that (and other genres too).

message 3343: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments Welcome Ana! I have never been in Portugal but I'm sure it's a wonderful country.

message 3344: by Ana (new)

Ana Thank you Dely! ;) It is a wonderful country indeed. I've never been in, Italy but i hear it's also top country, full culture and nice people!
I'm happy to join the group, i'm looking forward on discussing books wit you.

message 3345: by Karin (new)

Karin Welcome, Ana! I have met a number of people from Portugal since I live in the area of the US where there are a LOT of people from there (so I have head the language quite a bit since moving here), but I've never been. It's great to see you here :).

message 3346: by Ana (new)

Ana Nice to meet you Karin :) Amazing to see how Portuguese people are spread around the globe! The language can be a bit rough for American speakers, but hey everything's possible ;)

Karin Ana wrote: "Nice to meet you Karin :) Amazing to see how Portuguese people are spread around the globe! The language can be a bit rough for American speakers, but hey everything's possible ;)"

True. Someone I know explained to me that you often use more words to say things than we do, but it was long ago and it's possible I mixed it up.

message 3348: by Ana (new)

Ana Karin, maybe it's the other way around. 1 Portuguese word can be applied in more than one context. English has its own word for each context, like 'tongue' and 'language'. In Portuguese 'lingua' serves both contexts. Confusing, huh :)

Perhaps you are right, I was in perinatal mode with my youngest at that time so could have been mixed up.
