Greg wrote: I agree Portia! And even though translations can never be quite the same, they can sometimes be works of art of their own well worthy of reading! .."Yes, they can. So choosing a good one helps. For example, if you choose to read the unabridged version of Le Mis, you want an excellent translator of Victor Hugo such as Norman Denny. Most translations aren't nearly as good, which makes it harder to enjoy.
Greg wrote: "Welcome Anna! Hope you enjoy the group - we're very glad to have you join us! :)"Thank you, Greg :)
Hello all,I've been lurking for a while, finally ready to join in. I love books and talking about them, and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in here.
I love the classics and modern stuff as well but I feel a bit out of touch/can't keep up with what's out there more recently. My favourite discovery of late was Elena Ferrante, I've been devouring her!
This group's choices really appeal - a tasty mix of familiar favourites and new terrain. I can't face Jane Eyre again (nothing personal - I'm not much of a re-reader) but I've enjoyed giving Brick Lane a go and I've just picked up the Crow from the local library. Reading plays doesn't appeal either (I sound like a right fusspot) but I've found a performance of Eurydice on YouTube.
I'm looking forward to chittering with yous
Sally
Hi group. I'm new here. Greg and Susie mentioned this group in our Catholic Thought club and I checked it out. It seems like a natural fit for me. I'm a lover of classic literature. Looking forward to reading Ted Hughes' Crow. I read it many years ago, and I should still have it on my bookshelf (poetry corner) somewhere.

A warm welcome Manny - glad to have you in the group! :)

Thank you Greg and Laura. I do keep a personal blog on my readings, with an occasional essay sort of post. You can also read something about me. This is my blog if anyone is interested:http://ashesfromburntroses.blogspot.com/
Welcome Manny...glad you decided to join...there is a lot of different things to check out that you might like!
Hi everyone! My name is Morgan & I enjoy reading anything that catches my eye. I want to meet new people. I'm a very shy person so it's hard for me to take the first step & talk to people but I'm working on being better. I'm excited at the idea of meeting people who are like me, so if I friend you but don't talk to you {or in general just don't talk a bunch} it's not because I'm rude or snubbing anyone, it's just because I'm not that good at putting myself out there.
Welcome Magg! We're a friendly bunch I think, and I think we have our fair share of introverts. :) Hope you enjoy the group!
Welcome Magg or is it Morgan? Not sure how uyou would like to be called. I'm new to this group too but I have found the various groups on goodreads to be very friendly. Feel free to talk as much or as little as you like. We're probably all book-a-holics here. ;)
Susie wrote: "Welcome Manny...glad you decided to join...there is a lot of different things to check out that you might like!"Yes, I see. I'm trying to figure it all out. I've always had trouble navigating around goodreads. It's never seemed user friendly to me, but I'm probably a lost cause when it comes to figuring out things like this.
Welcome Magg. We are opposite types - my father used to say I started talking at 10 months of age and have still to stop!
But that'the fun of being here: soace for all different kinds

Hello! I'm from the Germany, pretty new to GoodReads and like probably most members in this group i love books and reading.
I don't have any absolute preferrences but i mostly read, fantasy, fiction, science fiction, history, thriller, and anything that sounds like it could be a good read ;)
Looking forward to participating one way or the other when time allows and would like to find some reading-crazy friends maybe.
Welcome Magg and Be! I hope you will find a lot of interesting discussions in this group and a lot of new books to read.

Welcome Be. I'm always amazed at how proficient Germans speak and write in English. Next month I have on my list to read (in English translation) one of the great German novels, Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks. Have you ever read it? It was recommended to me, and I've been looking forward to it.

Hello AllMy name is Paige I am a woman who is retired and caring for my elderly Father. Hence I have a lot of time to read now. I like mystery and thrillers but I also like biographies and some love stories like the books that Nora Roberts writes. I just finished "High Noon". I also read "AThree Dog Life" a memoir by Abigail Thomas, it was pretty good.
I am joining in the "ReadAThon" competition this weekend!

Hello, I'm an avid reader from the UK who also writes. I've been on Goodreads since May 2015 but only just spotted this group and as it is all about reading it is right up my street ;-)
Welcome Be, Paige and Pam!Paige, your avatar looks so familiar to me that I think we must be in another group together -- I am also a mystery fan so probably it would be a mystery group... you will find some other mystery fans here!
Welcome Be,Paige and Pam.

Hello Laura. Well, I'm working at the moment and i don't have much time....let's see...I'm an English mother-tongue ESOL teacher and Cambridge examiner in a language centre in the EU. I love reading anything that is not fantasy and i love rock music.
Hi there, my name is Raul, from Nairobi. I love reading and I look forward to participating in this group. I actually happen to see a familiar face (should I say so hehe) here, hi there Greg!
Feels good to be in this group. I love books especially when it has to do with a grabbing story. I reside in Africa.

I agree Portia! And even though translations can never be quite the same, they can sometimes be works of art of their own well worthy of reading!
Even with poetry, translations can sometimes be astonishingly lovely works of art ... though they must be at least a little different than the original poems if they are to remain poetry since very literal poetry translations are almost always dead on the page.
