Hello, everyone!I love book clubs. I was an English major in college and enjoy any roundtable discussion of good books. A myriad of authors occupy my favorite list, but I'll reference Willa Cather, Mark Twain, Jack London, John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, Joseph Conrad, and Graham Greene. I also appreciate good science fiction and fantasy, including authors like Orson Scott Card, Gene Wolfe, Anne McCaffrey, Tad Williams, Richard Adams, and Peter Beagle. Then there are the legal thrillers along the lines of John Grisham. You might find notes of these authors in my own writings.
Hope you're in the middle of a great book!

Chandler, glad you wish to join our group. We have a strict policy of no self promotion in AAB , so please can you remove the references to your book from your message.

Hi Caecilia, I love Austria. I was 4 times in Wien and once in Salzburg, and I am in love with both cities. Some years ago I wanted to go live in Wien. I would like to explore the country further when I'll have the time and money.

well, Dankeschön. // yes, Vienna has its charm. it is tiny, but still a city. the public transport system is ace and I like how the inner city has so many beautiful, old buildings. if you come again, make sure to make it in spring - that's the best time to visit Austria.

Welcome, Caecilia (a name I've always loved).
It's ALWAYS good to ask how to pronounce "ae" when seen in English. I've seen it like this (Caesar and now Caecilia), like an i, such as enclopaedia, and as a long a sound like plate in an actor's name (I heard him say it so know that's correct). There may be more I don't know about.
Karin :-) hello! ~ oh, and very good point with the pronunciation. your name sounds Austrian / German / Swiss ... may I ask where you are from?
Caecilia wrote: "Karin :-) hello! ~ oh, and very good point with the pronunciation. your name sounds Austrian / German / Swiss ... may I ask where you are from?"So funny, to me the name Karin sounds Scandinavian!

Both Karin and Karen are Scandinavian. Karen is the Danish spelling, Karin the Norwegian & Swedish spelling. My mother got some name trees, and Karin is actually the older spelling.
How you say Karin depends on where you're from. I'll answer to three different pronunciations, but only think of one spelling as mine. This is in part because we spent a year in Germany when I was little where everyone there pronounced it with German phonics and in part because Swedish and Norse people pronounced it their way.
I'm half Icelandic and half German Mennonite (I know Mennonite is a religion, but this was an ethnic group for a number of hundred years so had their own culture until my dad's generation grew up and moved on in his family) by heritage; my parents each grew up bilingual (my dad didn't learn English until he went to school). If you were going to use Karin in either of those countries, this is the spelling you'd use.
Leslie wrote: "Wow, that is so interesting Karin! Thanks for filling us in :)"No problem. Some find it boring, but I love the histories of names, people's names and how they are spelled, so I hope others do, too. Because of my spelling, I try to spell carefully but have been known to make mistakes, too.
:-DKarin ~ that is really cool. thank you for taking the time, explaining & sharing. learned something!
Caecilia wrote: ":-DKarin ~ that is really cool. thank you for taking the time, explaining & sharing. learned something!"
No problem. Yours is the first ae spelling I've seen of your name, so I'm adding that. I've always liked that name.

Hello all, I'm Sophie, 28, from London (UK). I love thrillers, fantasy, chick-lit and horror but try not to rule any genres out completely! My favourite authors are Robin Hobb, Stephen King, Linwood Barclay, Deborah Harkness (to name a few). Looking forward to getting to know you all :)
Hi Sophie from London! London is my beloved city! I go there as often as I manage. Last time it was last June.
But this is the only thing we have in common: I don't know the authors you mention. And I'm glad of it: it's always a pleasure whan I find something new to discover
