Welcome / Member Introductions
I am re-introducing myself. I had participated for about a year but I've taken about 9 months off. I got diagnosed with cancer last December and between treatments, surgery, working and trying to maintain a life, I was not on the internet much. The good news is that I have been cancer free for about 4 months and my prognosis is good. We just got back from a celebratory trip to Switzerland and Paris. Looking forward to catching up with everyone.
Katy, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles and so glad to hear that things are more positive now. I'm looking forward to seeing you post again. How were Switzerland and Paris?
Hi Katy, I realised you weren't here, but didn't know why. It's good to have you back, so good that your prognosis is good. Switzerland and Paris sound great.
Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!! The recommendations feature is hopeless! I read ONE book about a missionary and all my recommendations are for more of the same. I am not interested in reading about missionaries and it's hardly the only book I read recently. Recommendations seem to get worse not better as time goes on!Please excuse this small rant! Thank you :)
Hi, I'm N.C. Reed. It's true I rarely post but it's just because of a lack of time, not a lack of interest. I usually look for recommendations for new reading on Goodreads simply because I've found that the people who review here are pretty forthright, but don't give away the details usually which can spoil a book. I do enjoy reading discussions about different books, especially if it's a genre or author that I really like.
I'll try and make it a point of effort to participate more.
Meanwhile, happy reading!
NCR
Welcome back, Katy! Glad to hear your health is better now. What a great idea to take that celebratory trip! Good for you!
Welcome Angela N.C.and welcome back Katy; glad to hear that your health has improved. We are all here for you!
Welcome N.C.!And welcome back Katy, we've missed you! Sorry for the hard year you must have had, but very glad that the prognosis is good!
Welcome back Katy. I'm pleased to hear you have got through your treatment and with a good prognosis.
Welcome Angela and NC

Dear All,My name is Ugur and I am from Istanbul, Turkey. I am a double major of Computer Engineering and Management. Married and has a 6 year old son.
Books and reading had always an important place in my life since my childhood. It started with a gift book from my uncle when I was 7 years old and it has grown to a style of living, where reading had always an essential role. I can not think of going anywhere without a book with me, whether it is a hardcover, on my iPhone, kindle or ipad.
Just to let you know how much I love reading, the last thing I did was stopping using my private car and switching to use public transportation instead which saved me quite a lot of time for reading. To be honest, it was very difficult but worth it.
And a few words about GoodReads, I love it :) Our time is limited and there are plenty of books to read. Choosing the right book is very important.
I share the philosophy of GoodReads and support it with all my heart "The right book in the right hands at the right time
can change the world."
Good Reads to you all :)

And glad to see another drama fan back posting ;)
So wonderful to meet so many members and hear about where everyone is from & a little about them. Sorry I can't respond individually but hopefully I will get a chance to chat with each of you in the various discussion threads at some point.

Katy, So happy to see you back ! I'm so sorry for the hard time you've had but so very glad that you are cancer free and doing well !

I hope you will have again time for GR.
Welcome to all the new members! I like to read your introductions and to know a little bit about you. Hope to see you also in the other discussions to know you better.
The name is Greg. I live in Albany, Western Australia. I love coffee and cigarettes, one of which I am unsuccessfully trying to give up. I like short reads, flash fiction and minimalist poetry. I can read a novel but I'd rather not if I can help it. I write haiku unsuccessfully. I am prone to dribble, therefore I will keep this message short. Hi from a place Charles Darwin thought horrid.
I don't think I've post on this welcome before so here goes-- You can call me Alyse or Batty. I know, odd nickname. Stands for whats obviously noticeable, as well as Batjuan. (Started between a friend and I.) I love love love to read. It's a way to cope with everything. I just love getting lost in another reality. I got on here to meet fellow bookworms. I smoke every now and then, more to help with insomnia and stress more than anything. I live in Florida unfortunately. Other than read, I love doodling, trying to write, and photography. I also love driving, but kinda can't as of late. But i'll stop ramblin', nice to meet you all!
Welcome everyone! This is a great group and I'm looking forward to all your comments in the threads.
Hi, I joined GoodReads in 2011. The first group I joined here was Novel Books and Reading Challenges, but I'm not as active in that one as I used to be. I'm also in the Reading for Pleasure book group, Tattered Tales, the JRR Tolkien book group and the Neil Gaiman book group. Most of what I read is fiction, but also some poetry, nature writing and history (I'm a history major in my senior year of college). I also like cooking and hiking. I was interested to see that your autumn poet is Yeats. Some of his poems are included in the Norton Anthology of Poetry that I have. I really like those and a few others that I've read.

I am sorry if this is a really dum question, but what are chicklits?

Not a dumb question at all! We were just discussing in another thread (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) what makes a book "chick lit". You can look over that discussion but the short answer is "chick lit" stands for chick literature, chick being slang for woman/female.

Oooo, thank you for explaining ...
Welcome Maelanie and Beth!
I don't generally love Chick Lit, but sometimes it can be fun! Which book would you recomend Susan?

Hi everybody!I saw Gill's message some days ago but didn't have time to jump in this thread so far. Now I have some time, so here I am :-)
I'm Marina, 33 year old woman from Central Italy, and have been a member of this group for a couple of months, I think. I'm a technical translator from German and English into Italian.
In my free time I love to read, go to the theatre, walk, and so on. I'm still familiarizing with the city I live in, as I've moved here only at the end of August. So I still have to explore.
Feel free to ask should you have any questions!
Hi Marina!
Where exactly in central Italy do you live? I in Perugia. And I work with languages as well, even if only with English! I can speack a very little German, no more!!!

Welcome Maelanie and Marina!
Hello, everyone. My name is Calab and I am a junior in high school living in Iowa. I am currently reading "Suite Francaise" (Suite Française.) I apologize for not being more active in the group, but my school work has certainly kept me busy. I am an avid reader, but it seems like I don't have as much time to read these days. I would like to get back to reading more often, as I love stimulating and challenging my mind. In addition to reading, I love watching movies and wrting reviews, as I have a very analytical mind. All in all, it's nice to finally get some time to comment on here.

Welcome Calab! Several of us read Suite Française this year since Irène Némirovsky was a seasonal author -- please feel free to add your impressions to that thread:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Do you have Monday as a holiday in Iowa? Columbus Day is always a day off of school here in Mass.

Ooops, sorry for the delay, I hadn't seen your post. I am originally from a small town near Macerata, but have been now living in Pescara for little more than a month.
