message 1902: by Robin (new)

Robin Bloom (loneraverss) Hi there.
Nothing much to introduce myself with, i basically read, dance and make music, in no particular order. I'm French, speaking a decent english but only recently starting to shift my reading habits to english language only in the long run.

Since i'm up to tackle the english version of the books i've already read and appreciated in French i figured i'd just take a new start here and only add those.

Hope to meet you all in discussions at some point.-

Bye

Welcome here Lone.
And don't worry for your English. We have a lot of non native english speaker - I'm one of them!!!! And the more you read in English, the more confident you'll feel in writing it!

message 1904: by Monica (new)

Monica Davis Joined this group after seeing some of books you've read, and found your discussions interesting. (I've completed The Hangman's Daughter series and enjoyed the storyline.) I've recently started The Lies of Locke Lamora and see that you have a read-along beginning soon. I'd love to hear what others think about this book. (Always more fun to read with others.)

Chinook | 543 comments Hello. I've joined because I need a reminder to read rather than futz about on social media. I have a four month old, so my reading is very random - some days I can finish off a book, others I'm too tired to do anything but stare at the TV!

Julia (juliace) | 720 comments Hi Everyone! I hope you all had a Safe & Happy Thanksgiving.

My name is Julia, I live in Fl w/ my BF of 15 years. I always have a book with me. I've been reading ever since I can remember. My fave author is Nora Roberts, JD Robb, Kristin Hannah, Emily Giffin. I don't really have a fave genre, but lately I've been leaning toward women's fiction. I'll read anything that holds my interest. Look forward to chatting!

Pamela Dimmick Hi, I'm Pam from California. Looking forward to exploring books with you all. Just finished The Book Thief tonight and loved it. Enjoyed Station Eleven just prior to that and am ready to dig into the group's December book, Atonement.

message 1932: by Beholderess (new)

Beholderess | 17 comments Greetings

I am very new to the site, at least to its social aspect, so please forgive me if i should somewhat awkward.

I've used to be a very avid reader of fantasy in my youth, but found myself drifting away from fiction in the last few years, because with the fiction it is hard to say in advance whether you'd like the book or not, while with nonfiction the subject matter can be enough to see if it would hold ones interest. However, I do think that I am ought to get back to fiction, and will try to read at least one fiction book a month.

Current interests: Feminism and fat acceptance books, popular science nonfiction, cooking and how-to, fantasy and merry romance books, critical analysis of pop-culture and geekery, and the books outlined in Lovecraft essay on the supernatural horror in literature - I really should get to reading those eventually.

Demographics: female, Russian (though reading almost exclusively in English lately), 25 years old, reading mostly from Kindle.

message 1933: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Welcome Beholderness! Interesting screen name :)

I am a fantasy and sci fi fan (although not so much the horror end of the spectrum such as Lovecraft). I wonder if we have read anything in common?

message 1934: by Beholderess (new)

Beholderess | 17 comments Thank you, and pleased to meet you.

Ah, that is my common screenname, and I continue using it because it is not likely to be taken :)

The name comes from me being a Dungeons and Dragons fan.

From what I see, we have read something in common, the Barrayar cycle for one.

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 41 comments Hi I’m Carol, happily married to Tom thirty-one years ago today. We live in Connecticut (USA) with our daughter, and our two sons live in Austin, Texas, which is a great place to live. I enjoyed volunteering with special needs children, children’s literacy programs, and as a docent for the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. But I have been on disability since 1998, diagnosed with Lupus and Sjogren’s disease, which ended my career with the American Red Cross Blood Services. And I'm also a cancer survivor. Books have always been a part of my life since I was very young. I enjoy reading biographies, classics, historical fiction, poetry, fantasy, and mysteries.

I notice that another member here says they joined because they need a reminder to read, rather than "futz about on social media" — which sounds a lot like me!

My reading tastes are pretty catholic, but I particularly enjoy memoirs, Russian literature, Russian history, classics, contemporary fiction, dystopian novels, Edwardian children's books, and travel.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

Catholic with a small c means broad or wide-ranging in English (perhaps a reflection of the extent of the Catholic Church originally?).

I meant that in English, catholic (with no capital) means broad or wide-ranging.

Welcome Susan and Carol!

Carol, I also volunteer tutoring children, through the School on Wheels program in my case. I've tutored a special needs teenager (17) through their program for the past year and a half, and I've really enjoyed teaching him life skills like counting change. I think I was even more excited than he was when he started being able to subtract on paper with borrowing! After months of activities with change, he's improved a little with numbers. When paper subtracting, he has to use some tricks (finger counting etc.), but unbelievably awesome for him nevertheless!

And I enjoy reading poetry as well. Who are some poets you enjoy?
