Hello Everyone. I'm a mummy, Personal Trainer, player of words and avid reader with a weakness for romance novels and peanut m&ms. I love these threads and am finding them very addictive.
And Today is my BIRTHDAY! So am on a total sugar high! <;)

We do have lots of great chats about reading here though ;)

Sandra Fitzgerald (sandrafitz05) Thank you Greg. Isn't it a shame we have to work on our one day a year? I think we should all go to Disneyland instead!

@Sandra, I wish!

message 1513: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Sandra - That would be nice for those of us living further afield too - we'd never get back for work the next day! My niece went to Disneyland for her honeymoon :D

Of course if you get on really well with your work colleagues, sometimes they can make it every bit as special :)

message 1514: by Susannah (new)

Susannah (susannah-n) | 20 comments Hi everyone, my name is Susannah, and I am a project manager living in Orange County, California.

I've been trying to expand a bit lately with Goodreads reading groups, but I've wanted to be sure that the group is active and reading books that I think I'll want to read too. All About Books definitely meets both of those criteria! I can't believe how active the group is! I am looking forward to reading more of the discussion threads and discussing the group's selections with all of you. I'm especially happy to see that there is a regular play selection, as I love dramatic literature and think there is so much fodder in them for discussion.

As for favorites, I am a total evangelist for The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. I have been known to give this one as a gift whether friends and family have expressed interest in it or not. ;) Also, my very favorite non-fiction book is The Stuff of Dreams: Behind the Scenes of an American Community Theater by Leah Hager Cohen.

Welcome Susanna! I actually work in Orange County (Irvine) myself although I live in Los Angeles County. I haven't read The Sparrow yet, but more than one "real-life" friend has raved about it. I think I need to read that one soon! I love dramatic literature as well, and I feel lucky to have so many opportunities to see plays performed .. between the OC Theater Group, the world class Center Theater Group (Ahmanson, Taper, ...) downtown, and all the smaller theaters. Hope you enjoy the group!

I tend to take a day off on my birthday. This year I went to England with my daughter, last year to a spa with my husband, two years ago to an italian "Disneyland" - Mirabilandia, that used to let you in for free on your birthday!!!

message 1521: by Ellie (new)

Ellie M (elliemcc11) Hi. I'm from Manchester, England. I'm a mum to 2 kids under 2, and when I can, I like to read. I tend to read a variety of books although I tend to steer clear of horror & fantasy.

This seems a friendly group and I'll try and comment when I can - I'm also trying to complete my Doctorate by next Feb - but can't promise I'll be able to join in group reads etc.

And friend requests are welcome (but if you like someone who writes reviews it's not me unfortunately).

Hi Ellie the super mum! So no Steven King for you then?

message 1525: by Ellie (new)

Ellie M (elliemcc11) Thanks all! I've not read Stephen King but it wouldn't be out of my orbit. I'm much less keen on fantasy books (True Blood is great TV but I steer clear of vampires, fairies etc when reading).

And I'll only be a supermum if I finish this thesis :-)

Plenty if time to pick up reading again don't worry Mike.
And Elkue, as Leslie said before, I'm impressed you find time to breath with two kids under two - by the way twins? It was my nightmare! But trust me, in a wink they'll be grown and sleeping around!!!

Now they're taller than me and complain that we stay in Sardinia three weeks!!!

I don't speak from experience but I suspect that complaining is standard teenaged behaviour. I can remember feeling that way as a teen about family vacations in Maine which are now a high point of the year.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I really appreciate it.

Greg, I work in Aliso Viejo, so I'm just down the 5 from Irvine. :-D My condolences to you for what must be a wretched daily commute. I take the toll road from work to north Orange County where I live and fuss the entire way.

I'd love to know if you can recommend any of the smaller theater groups in Los Angeles. I look at the listings all the time, but I haven't been adventurous enough to try any of them out. I have been to the Geffen though and I saw Gatz at Redcat in November 2012. Do you know about this show? It's presented by a company out of New York called Elevator Repair Service. I've linked to their site, but essentially the show is an 8-hour, complete reading/dramatic presentation of The Great Gatsby. It was phenomenal.

I've been to Maine - it was lovely. Stayed a couple of days on a whirlwind tour of New England whilst honeymooning (they were the days ;))

Susannah, you're right - the commute is brutal. Audio books are what keep me sane. Audible.com should give some extra perks, in my opinion ;)

I've been to the Geffen more than once .. excellent theater though a bit expensive and hard to find deals on tickets there. Worth it though!

And the performance at the Redcat sounds fascinating! I missed that one somehow, didn't hear of it.

I'll post some info on some of my favorite venes for plays & musicals in LA county under the plays & musicals thread later this weekend, and I'll try to post a link here too so it's easier to find.

If you can, let me know on the plays & musicals thread when you see anything particularly good (either OC or LA)! So glad to have a local theater enthusiast in the group!

Have a great weekend Susannah!

Michael Henderson (michael_henderson) Hello, everyone. I'm Mike, and I live in Venice. I was interested to find a book club in Italy, and the list of books you read interested me as well.

Some of my favorite books are Ironweed, A Clockwork Orange, And the Ass Saw the Angel, and about anything by Cormac McCarthy.

Welcome Mike! Where exactly in Venice do you live?
It is a town I love, after having considered it for ages only an open air museum. I needed to visit it with a friend of mine from Mestre to see it in all its glory! And think that an aunt of mine has - or rather had: she's dead now and the house is her sons' - a flat in Corte Sconta del Milion, right next to the one of Marco Polo.

That's great Shannon!! Please post on the plays & musicals thread as well. We can help each other discover some new theater! :) LA or OC, both good - I can get to either one fairly easily as I live in the Southern end of LA County in Long Beach.

message 1549: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 G'day all

I have followed a couple of friends into here. My name is Sally and I am from Australia. Have been a bookworm all my life and am a fairly eclectic reader. My husband of 36 years is a book lover, one of our two daughters is (the other one thinks reading is boring) but all our grandchildren love books (even the 7 year old son of my non book reader)

I have been looking around the site here - looks like a friendly place with lots to do. Can't promise to visit everyday but no doubt will start popping up from time to time :)

I'm very happy about how big and diverse this group is becoming.
