A hearty welcome to Shannon, Evelyn, Holli, Jim, Don, and all the other new members. This is a fantastic group, I think you'll find many things of interest, and you'll definitely find some kindred souls!

Right now I am reading "Slaughter-house five" and "how to lose your mind and get a new one."

A big welcome to Aleta, Mads, Don, Jim, Evelyn, Holli, Shannon and Naomi! Hope you'll have a great time here!

RIGHT?? What was it that you personally liked best? I'm in love with the writing style and the eccentricity of everything. Perchov is hilarious and there are some really moving sections of the book-within-a-book.
And thank you for all the welcomes!

@Shannon: it feels like ages ago that I have read it, but I remember that I've rarely been cast into what felt like such an emotional roller coaster without me ever feeling cheaply manipulated (remember the technicolour skies with 'Titanic'? NOT THAT if you get my drift). I was found laughing tears, and also weeping copious amounts of them during reading. I remember loving the language, the eccentricity of it, the poetry of it. And the fact that I sometimes felt intentionally and happily lost in this novel. This could have easily been a novel with a content crushed to death by its eccentric form but Foer somehow achieved to prevent that. (PS: I am not entirely sure the film did though)

I know what you mean! The parts that were emotional were so genuine and his writing expressed those feelings perfectly without ever yelling at us "HEY READER FEEL SAD NOW." I'm only halfway through but I feel like I'm in for a lot more from here.
Yes yes, Alexander's incorrect English was so endearing! I'm really fascinated by language and how words can differ based on circumstance or syntax in ways that we never notice until it's called out, so this book got me thinking about that a LOT. Like for instance, how we'd say "It took 2 hours" and Alex would say "It captured 2 hours," or how we'd say "he grasped the concept" and Alex would say "he clutched the concept," because technically those CAN be synonyms of each other, just not in those particular situations. So interesting.
Oh, what is your native language?? Have any funny mistranslation stories for us? :)
Welcome Holli, Shannon, Naomi!
I've been away so I didn't have time to great you all in time. But I know that all the others have done a great job!

Hi! My name is Giorgia and I'm from Italy. I've checked the books on the currently reading shelf and they're very much to my taste. I'm sure the upcoming reads of the month will be as well. I can't wait to get started ;)

@Shannon, I am German and strangely most of my translation disasters are of the indecent kind, so much so, that I am still blushing just thinking of them, so don't make me repeat them in public! ;)

I've just had a book published on Amazon.com, but I'm not here to promote it.
Just wanted to say "hi" to everyone and see what everyone is reading.
Thanks,
Bill Collins
Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

I'm from the North-East of Italy, precisely from Trieste.

@Giorgia,Trieste is beautiful, I went there for a mini-vacation last year and really enjoyed my time there.
Welcome Bill! We have a section for non fiction reading in here, so I hope you'll enjoy it!
And Giorgia, Trieste is really great: you have both mountains and seaside together; plus you're quite near to Europe by trein of plane - or car! Lucky you. Umbria is so far away from everything!

Congratulations on your publication!

Hi Bailey! You sound a lot like me. :) I've been a long-time band nut, theatre nut, and dance nut as well. I played (still play) clarinet and Phantom of the Opera was my favorite musical too! Andrew Lloyd Webber can do no wrong, right?
This is a great group with lots of discussions happening, hope you enjoy :)

Hi Bailey! You sound a lot like me. :) I've..."
I was a clarinet player back in my high school band days! I haven't picked it up in decades though...

I'm about to raise my nerd flag pretty high, but I LOVE playing marches, specifically JP Sousa. I love the speed and intricacy, they're so fun! What about you?
My primary dance style is contemporary. You've done a lot of styles, did you ever try contemp or modern?

Hey, high five! Yeah, I took a long break after graduating high school (not decades though, hehe), because college had me too swamped for playing music, but now I'm in a community ensemble that meets once a week. The muscle memory never went away!

I'm also an Art girl. I'm always reading, writing and listening to music. In high school, I was always in theatre on stage dancing and acting. Ballet is my favorite. I'm excited to meet someone who I have so much in common with and look forward to getting to know you through books!

@Bailey, if you like musicals, you may like to watch (if you haven't already) Notre Dame de Paris, which I happened to stumble upon on Youtube and have put it in my channel under the Musicals List. Here's the link to the full musical:-
