Ah well, the beaches and ocean are beautiful too! One reason I love NC is it has both the mountains & the ocean :) Mass. doesn't really have mountains, just tall hills.

I agree. My family has vacationed to the beach several times and it is an experience that never seems to last long enough, unless your sunburned that is. I absolutely love hot weather, the hotter the better. Apart from landscape Massachusetts has to be steeped in history, right? I learned recently that our county, Rutherford, was the first county in the country to mint a gold coin.

message 603: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Interesting - I knew Georgia had gold mines but not that NC did.

message 604: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Hello, I am Nancy from Carolina, Puerto Rico. My favorite author throughout the years has been Danielle Steele. I also enjoy Marie Force within the Romance genre. For action give me anything by Dan Brown. My favorite book from the ones I have read recently is Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by A. Quindlen. The first book I remember reading and being a favorite in my younger years was Island of the Blue Dolphins by S. O'Dell. I like most genres except mysteries or anything related to murders and detectives. I look forward to meeting my new favorites through GoodReads and this Group.

message 613: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Anderson (chillinkristen) " Hi! My name is Kristen and I look forward to getting some suggestions on new books, old books and in-between books that I never got around to checking out here. Part of why I'm getting more active on Good Reads is because I just started a book club podcast with my brother, and I have to make sure to stay on top of what's out there a little better! If you'd like to check it out you can here:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/b...
The most recent book we cover is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, so if you've read it please feel free to listen! We go on tangents and get off topic just as I'd imagine a "real" book club does, but we still talk plenty about our likes and dislikes so it should be fun and maybe make you notice things you hadn't before. Thanks, look forward to hanging around :)

message 614: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Carroll (jacob_carroll) Welcome Kristen and best wishes to you and your brother's podcast.

Welcome Kirsten. What a nice idea the book club; I'm afraid I'm overwhelmed with the things to do, but I hope to have time to come and give a look sooner or later!!!!

message 618: by Kath (new)

Kath | 2 comments Hi everyone, I was looking for a book club on classics, as I used to read alot of them, and have got out of the habit. This group seems ideal, and not only do you feature classics there is also poetry suggestions or modern literature as well if I fancy something different. I will be downloading Peacock's book to take part in the group discussion, although I think Percy is the greatest so I hope he doesn't tear him apart too much!

Leslie | 16369 comments Welcome Kristen and Sapling! And Sapling, we also have a group read of nonfiction bimonthly and a play each season (although this winter we are doing a playwright instead of a specific play -- Tom Stoppard).

Please feel free to jump into any of the discussions!

Welcome Sapling, Molly and Ambet.
We try to have all sorts of books read in here, so everybody feels at home: I'm rather keen on classics, but since we've started this adventure I've read more non fiction and poetry. Hope to see you around chatting with us

In which library of your University do you work? The general one?

You are right to be proud of your grandfather!

In the past I worked at the law library, but now I'm working at the offices of the centralized library system.

He was my great grand father! My grandfather was a GP, my father a neurologist. All doctors; it's only me who has not followed their lead! I've studied languages.

message 645: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Did you say (some thread) your job is as a translator, Laura? What type of thing? Which languages?

message 646: by LauraT (last edited Jan 08, 2014 03:33AM) (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 14377 comments Mod
I'm not a professional translator: I work in a public office giving informations for young people. I sometims help other officecs when they need translations done, or when they have people from abroad: in Italy very few people can speack english and therefore it is not seldom I have to do things like that - which I particularly like.
For a period I've worked - almost two months - for the foundation which is now working on the candidacy of Perugia as european cultural capital, but even if I hoped to be left there, I had to come back here, doing almost nothing: nowadays young people the informations are able of finding for themselves!

Kelly (Kelly5352) | 0 comments Hello I am Kelly :) I am 25 from the US and I love to read and have been active in other groups and this group was recommended to me and I looked through all the reads you have going on and am really excited to join this group. I currently am reading The Golden Notebook which is lucky because so is this group and also I am rereading Love in the Time of Cholera and Pale Fire. I want to spend a a few months this year only reading books by female authors and I also want to read more books from the 1001 books list. I am also interesting in biographies and autobiographies of female explorers. So I will try to get as many diverse books in as I can in 2014.

Welcome Kelly!
What do you think of The Golden Notebook?
I'm finding it a bit hard to follow, but maybe it's better if we discuss abouti it in the proper place!!!
