Angela | 738 comments I loved the Bell Jar! I went to a fascinating lecture on the book and it's author last year. I hope you like it Anna - let me know what you think :)

About two thirds of the way through The Medusa Frequency.
I love it - it's just the right side of too peculiar.

Cool - I'm onto that one next!

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 175 comments I'm reading a series of children's / YA books by Herbie Brennan, first of which isFaerie Wars. Really imaginative fantasy - as good as Harry Potter in my opinion.

message 855: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Puck of Pook's Hill ,which I loved, and just started Hangsaman

Angela | 738 comments They sound awesome Joy - what would you put the age group at?

message 857: by Laurel (new)

They sound pretty interesting Joy, I've just finished (literally two minutes ago) re-reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which I love! Have been in a bit of a reading slump, you know when everything feels like hard work and you just can't concentrate? So I thought a fun, kid's book would help and it did :)

message 858: by Howard (new)

Howard (antipodes) | 210 comments Hey! I resemble that reading slump remark! Have been on a Jack Reacher and Kay Scarpetta jag for about 3 weeks or so. The detective/murder mysteries work for my light reading break. 'Bout ready to get back to some more serious fare full tilt, though.

message 859: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments I had a slump a few weeks ago and indulged in some Agatha Christie - a helpful prescription for anyone who needs to relax and escape a little :o)

Yeah I feel a bit better now - am going to intersperse the serious reads with some old fave's and lighter stuff and hopefully that will work - I hate it when you can't settle to anything!

I raced through The Medusa Frequency by Russell Hoban which was cool and now am reading The Devil All the Time and The Lost Ark of the Covenant: The Remarkable Story of How the Fabled Ark Was Found.

message 861: by Howard (new)

Howard (antipodes) | 210 comments The Ark of the Covenant has been found!??!!? This I must investigate. I know that for years it has been rumored to be in that Ethiopian conclave, but being found is news! OK, just read the book synopsis on Goodreads, and must read this book. Thanks Laurel, just the adventure to snap me out of my current lethargy.

Howard (antipodes) | 210 comments Allright!! Just downloaded a copy from Scribd. A cup of coffee (it's 10:00 am in Mississippi - and 81 degrees F), turn the phone off and we're set. Thanks again, Laurel.

This reminds me of the first time they showed Raiders of the Lost Ark on TV - one Christmas Day years ago. I was at my Grandparents and Aunty Madge and her awful friend Margot had come round. Just at the point where the angel thingies had come out of the ark and were melting everyone, Margot said - "is this a true story?" :0)

message 864: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Aww bless Margot - of course it's a true story ;)

@Antipodes - I'm so glad you are all excited for reading this book - I'm only a few chapters in and it's really interesting. Not sure how accurate the title is but we'll see - I'm reserving judgement until I get to the end. Enjoy!

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 175 comments Angela wrote: "They sound awesome Joy - what would you put the age group at?"

Difficult to say. The characters get older with each book,as they do in HP, so perhaps from age 10 onwards.

message 866: by [deleted user] (new)

About a third of the way through I Pose and just about to start Mysteries

You're welcome :0) I discovered yesterday that there is a sequel Rewards and Fairies and have just downloaded it

I've just started City of Thieves by David Benioff which is good so far, and am about to start The Big Sleep soon.

message 870: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 175 comments I had a big pile of new books for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I'm currently reading The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden. I really enjoyed The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared, but this one, although quite funny in places, is really too similar. It's another character who inadvertently affects real historical events. Its similarity makes it feel rather formulaic.

message 871: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Oh, that sounds a little disappointing, Joy :-(

message 872: by [deleted user] (new)

Just about one quarter of the way through Mysteries - which is as odd as it sounds

Mysteries looks really good Lee - how's it going?

Ursula le Guin has sent me on a full scale fantasy binge so I have abandoned everything else I was reading/planning to read to re-read Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy as she has a new book about Fitz and Fool coming out next month. Am about halfway through Assassin's Apprentice and had forgotten how much I loved it! It's been about 10 years since I read these and I absolutely can't put it down!

message 874: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments The Night Circus - I started this last week and am in the home stretch! Loving it - really gets me using my imagination.

message 875: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm really enjoying The Mysteries - I have no idea what outrageous thing the protagonist is going to say or do next !

message 876: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Sound's cool, I'll keep my eyes out for it!

@Angela- I loved the night circus, glad you're enjoying it.

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 175 comments I'm reading The Light Years, recommended by a real-life friend. At first I thought the detailed description of objects was going to make it hard going, but after about 50 pages I started to become really engrossed by the characters and now can hardly put it down.

I'm reading Embassytown by China Mieville which is great as all his stuff is and also Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt - I've never seen the film but will have to watch it after this, really enjoying it.

message 879: by Dianne (new)

Dianne (deemitchell) I am reading the help by Kathryn stockett, which is really much better than I expected. I read midnight in the garden of good and evil on a couple of months ago- what an amazing collection of characters!

They're all crazy aren't they? I'd love to visit Savannah, it sounds like a beautiful city as well as being so full of these characters!

I actually really enjoyed 'The Help' as well - wasn't expecting much from it but I was laughing out loud a few times and really loved the characters.

message 881: by Dianne (new)

Dianne (deemitchell) They may well be, my brother in law is from there and everyone just refers to him as 'the Buddhist', no first name even!
