I'm glad you're all happy here :0) I think my favourite thing about the club is simply being able to chat about books with interesting and pleasant people like your good selves :0)

Anna I've just read the article and I think she's right about the danger of lists making you rush reading a book to get on with the next one. I'm going to give Amazon a miss for a while - I get too sidetracked by their 'deals' and recommendations and I've already downloaded 25 books onto my kindle (getting carried away with a new toy!!)

message 1005: by [deleted user] (new)

I know what you mean about those Amazon deals - they're just so tempting. I'm doing my best to be a bit more discriminating these days - but not always succeeding :0)

message 1006: by Anna (last edited May 06, 2014 08:42AM) (new)

Anna @Lee: Yes and most of them are by people i've never heard of and suspect will not be very good.
I've got a new approach - look on Goodreads first, (especially IrtIa group threads) and if a book gets praised I view the page for it and click on the link to Amazon. This takes me straight to its page on Amazon and then I can add the book to my Wish List called 'Maybe Reads'. I can then review the Wish List and any price reductions will show up.
I'm also going to avoid using the Want to Read button in Goodreads, so the only books on my "to-read" shelf will be ones i've definitely got already.

message 1007: by Anna (new)

Anna PS. IrtIa = I read therefore I am (you probably guessed that).

message 1008: by [deleted user] (new)

Irtla - I like it :0)

How is everyone today? All excited for the weekend? I've had my day off today - took my mum shopping this morning, then came back and made a batch of sweet chilli jam and a lemon drizzle cake, and now I'm chilling with The Dumas Club.

message 1010: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Love, love, love lemon drizzle cake! I'm sure you could spare me some! I just don't seem to have time to breathe even at the moment and next week is even busier. I'm dealing with the EOY and tax EOY for my sons business, hosting on the same day my book groups monthly meeting and a visit from an old school friend that I haven't seen or even spoken to for 38 years, plus all the usual chores. I haven't even started the book that the group are to discuss on Tuesday and I've said I'll have my grandson at the week end. Oh, and tomorrow because the most direct route from here to Alnwick is shut for roadworks I have a 40 mile round trip to buy some food! I think I'd better stop there! I bet you wish you hadn't asked!

Angela | 738 comments Hello ladies!
Laurel that drizzle cake sounds immense! It's only 8am here but I could totally murder a piece of that right now. How is the weather where you are? It is absolutely FREEZING in Melbourne and being of a slighter build, my bones are positively purple :(
Hilary you sounds absolutely frantic! At least it all sounds like (mostly) fun stuff though. What do you plan to do this weekend with the little one?
It will be Mothers Day here Sunday so we will be doing the dutiful meet-up somewhere between shopping and yoga :)

message 1012: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments @ Angela. I bet your version of freezing isn't quite the same as mine!! Plans with the little one (aged 3) really depend on the weather but should include going to the park, playing "Olympics" which involves lots of running, jumping and counting, doing jigsaws and baking biscuits. Busy and messy but fun barring "accidents" in the pants and temper tantrums! Enjoy your time with mother, she's worth it. (Really had to say that as I am one!)

message 1013: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Haha thanks Hil! It was 4 degrees c when I woke up and that's far too outrageous for me. Enjoy the time with the kiddo - I bet he loves having a gran who is so active and energetic :)

message 1014: by [deleted user] (new)

Feeling a bit under the weather, though I'm sure that some of Laurel's lemon drizzle cake would sort me out - even reading about your weekend makes me feel tired, Hilary - what's an EOY by the way?
I am sending you warming thoughts Angela - though perhaps a hot water bottle would be more effective :0)

message 1015: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
wow Hilary that sounds a bit crazy! Hope you enjoy it anyway ;)
I wish I could send you all some cake but I'm not sure it would survive the journey lol! (especially Angela's) Oh well, if I ever get my own little shop you can all come visit for complimentary book-buddies cuppa's n cake :)
Lee - hope you're feeling better soon! And Angela, I hope it's a bit warmer today....

message 1016: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments @Lee Hope you're better soon, Lee. Sorry about EOY, just shorthand for end of year, company's and taxman's.

message 1017: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Thanks for the warming thoughts my friends :-) some rain this morning but I can feel my fingers so that's a small win. And I'll hold you to that cake tasting when I'm next over Laurel - I am still thinking about it!

message 1018: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) It probably says a lot about me that I knew exactly what EOY meant..

message 1019: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments @ Ellie - dreadful isn't it!
@Laurel - I have just been presented with TWO lemon drizzle cakes for "being kind and thoughtful" to a friend of a friend. Who said being nice never pays. Although I should really share them with the 15 asserted visitors I've having over the course of tomorrow, guess what - I'm not going to! Well, perhaps I've give a slice to the one who is coming in the evening - if I've left any by then. I do love lemon drizzle cake !!

message 1020: by [deleted user] (new)

It just made me think of Eeyore :0)

I love the idea of lemon drizzle cake karma - I'm going to be kind and thoughtful all day tomorrow and see what happens.

message 1021: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments A good resolution Lee :-) Mine is to try and be honest with people today. Social experiments all round.

message 1022: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Ha ha cake karma - I love it! Hope you didn't have to share it Hilary ;)

Good luck with the resolutions guys - mine is to do as little work as possible without getting caught out!

message 1023: by [deleted user] (new)

Good plan

message 1024: by Anna (new)

Anna Who can help me with a Literary crossword I'm stuck on? The Across clues are 1 word titles of books/plays and all you're given is the author surname and number of letters eg. Austen(4) (='Emma').
Down clues are normal so I've got some letters. The 2 I can't get are Eliot(6) _O_O__ and Ibsen(5) _R_N_
Any ideas? No prizes/lemon drizzle cake I'm afraid.

message 1025: by [deleted user] (new)

I think the Eliot one might be Romola.

message 1026: by Anna (new)

Anna Thanks. Just looked it up and it sounds really interesting. Wonder why I'd never heard of it before. Will add it to my lists but Middlemarch will have to come first!.

message 1027: by Angela (last edited May 13, 2014 03:10PM) (new)

Angela | 738 comments How are the resolutions coming ladies? I liked yours very much Laurel - I will be experimenting with that one today methinks (says she, as she sits sipping a latte and hiding from morning briefing haha!!)
I tried the honesty thing but found it very confronting - more for myself because I spent the rest of the day obsessing over whether I was a horrible person. How was your kindness endeavour Lee?

That's a tricky crossword Anna - though I do love word puzzles. I have Middlemarch on my list too after Woolf raved about it in A Room Of One's Own.

message 1028: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Only just catching up with the threads after a very busy day. I relented and shared the lemon drizzle cake throughout the day with the various sets of visitors but have made sure I'm left with three slices just for me tomorrow. What a naughty but very tempting resolution Laurel - good luck!

@Angela - enjoy your latte! Morning briefings are rubbish - so glad I've escaped from working in an office. We were quite quiet so had a nice relaxed day really.
@Hilary - at least you got some - I made a whole cake tin full of brownies for work a couple of weeks ago and they ate them all in one day! Greedy piglets...
@Anna - the Ibsen one is Brand but you are probably finished the crossword now lol ;) Btw Middlemarch is brilliant - I absolutely love George Eliot - but haven't read Romola, that one's still on my tbr list.

message 1030: by [deleted user] (new)

Well I wasn't unkind or inconsiderate but I guess those are rather negative virtues which probably explains why I wasn't showered with lemon drizzle cake :0)
@ Angela - honesty is a tricky one - with your boss when you've made a terrible error - definitely the best policy, with yourself when you admit that you really do like Elvis (Hilary I'm talking to you) it's a virtue, but with your work colleague, when you tell her that the volume she achieves when eating her crisps is driving you mad - probably not such a good idea :0)

message 1031: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Hahaha oh Lee you really are the wise one of the lot :-)
I look forward to the day I'm out of the office Laurel. My yoga teacher training comes up soon so fingers crossed! Ommmm.....

message 1032: by Anna (new)

Anna @Laurel - Thanks for the Ibsen clue answer. Another one I'd never heard of. That does finish that puzzle but it's from a book called The Literary Crossword Book with about 80 puzzles on various themes. I'm only up to no.32. I do cheat a bit and use Wikipedia!!

message 1033: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Sorry should have posted in this one: http://www.blogthings.com/thebookshel...

message 1034: by [deleted user] (new)

Fun test - my result was very accurate :0)

message 1035: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Mine too - and slightly ego inflating. I wonder how much more reading I could fit in if I DIDN'T fanny about on the internet doing useless quizzes. I did one earlier to see which animal I was in a previous life. Yep, an Owl. Boo-yeah. I think I need to step away from the mac. http://stuffhappens.us/what-animal-we...

message 1036: by [deleted user] (new)

I was a dolphin apparently :0)

message 1037: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Oh the friendliest of animals! :-)

message 1038: by Anna (last edited May 18, 2014 12:44PM) (new)

Anna I'm a Lion with an Informative Bookshelf!! Seems a bit contradictory.
Has anyone checked out 'Murder in the Library' in today's Guardian Culture section?
[link:http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014...] - which books to keep and which to let go?

message 1039: by Howard (new)

Howard (antipodes) | 210 comments I also was an owl. Actually, I''ve always thought an owl would be a cool pet. As long as she doesn't want to eat the ferrets.

message 1040: by [deleted user] (last edited May 18, 2014 01:38PM) (new)

@ Anna Ooh that would be hard - I'm forced to carry out periodic book culls - but I rarely manage more than 10 at a time - and even then at least 2 usually get a last minute reprieve. :0)

message 1041: by [deleted user] (new)

So far then we have 2 owls, a lion and a dolphin !

message 1042: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) And a spider! Which is ironic, as I freak out slightly at the sight of them.

message 1043: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) A spider with an impressive bookshelf

message 1044: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments It's turning into a C.S. Lewis tale in here! Maybe you see them as your grumpy mother-in-law from a previous life Ellie and that's why they make you squirmish ;)

message 1045: by Howard (new)

Howard (antipodes) | 210 comments I missed the bookshelf quiz earlier. So, an owl with an informative bookshelf am I, with a Sherlock Holmes complex, if memory serves. Scary.

message 1046: by [deleted user] (new)

And I'm a romantically gothic dolphin (Jane Eyre) with an Impressive bookshelf :0)

message 1047: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
And I'm an owl with a curated bookshelf! Ha ha I need to stop mucking around on the internet and go to the gym so I can feel better about making some cupcakes later ;) Did everyone have a good weekend? It's been lovely hasn't it? (although I've missed it cos of work boo hiss!)

message 1048: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Oh another owl! We are a wise and lively bunch. What kind of cupcakes are you baking L? My weekend was very relaxing

message 1049: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes gorgeous weather here in the UK - much tandeming and sitting in the garden :0)

message 1050: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments I've come to this topic very late after a busy time in this lovely weather. I've discovered that I'm an owl with a curated bookshelf. I'm happy about the owl not sure about the curated bookshelf!
