BBQ went well, all the food gone and lots of compliments. The sun stayed out, well, most of the time so a great day. They are now all gone and I am we'll and truly bu...........ed. is that a reginal expression, marra?

@Lee (is that right?) the little fella is a bit bigger than the photo indicates. SHE is called Pepper and is my 6month old miniature schnauzer. A bit of a handful - don't get me started on how difficult she is compared to my lovely rottweillers I've had before!! The photo was taken on a recent adventure I had seeing if I could manage driving a motorhome on a weeks touring holiday. Interesting, but a whole other story.
@Hilary (yes thats right), I do beg Pepper's pardon - she looks gorgeous. Shes reminded me of one of my favourite things about H G Wells' Mr Polly. Whenever he was in a difficult situation (like when he suddenly found himself in danger of proposing to someone) he'd exclaim "Lil' dog!" and rush out of the room. On his wedding day as he was walking up the aisle, the shadow of a lil' dog flashed through his brain (H G Wells puts it much better) but he realised it was too late!

@ Laurel - thanks - it took me ages to take a half decent picture - Sherlock and Watson came from the Sherlock Holmes Museum (in Baker Street obviously) many years ago.
Re: 'daps' - I grew up in Somerset and we always used the word 'daps' for plimsoles. I think I was about 18 before I realised it wasn't standard English! I moved down to Plymouth and they didn't use the word there.
@ Joy. I was on a course in Leeds years ago when I was asked in a shop if I wanted my sandwich in bread or cake! I naturally said bread and couldn't wait to get back and tell my colleagues what had happened thinking they would be as astounded as I was. Of course they weren't at all because they understood immediately that I was being asked if I wanted it in bread or a bread bun!@ Lee. I always loved caravan touring with my late husband but knew I couldn't manage that so a motorhome was a trial replacement. I've never driven anything bigger than a 4X4 so I was anxious, very to be honest! But I managed the driving well and really felt I'd achieved something. Only Laurel perhaps would laugh to hear that my touring consisted of travelling between Belford, Bamburgh and Wooler. Suffice to say they are about 10 minutes drive apart and only 30minutes drive from home! But the purpose of the whole expedition was to drive and manoeuvre on narrow country roads and arrive and depart from smallish camping sites so what I did served my purpose! It did make my friends and family laugh though!

Hilary - well done on driving the motorhome. Over the years my cars have gradually decreased in size and I don't think I'd have the courage to try driving something like that now.I'd never heard the term 'cake' for a bread roll either!(But I only really know the south of the country).
Wednesday (heavy sigh) I don't know why but I really don't like Wednesdays. It didn't help that I kept thinking it was Thursday - and then suddenly realising the depressing truth - bloomin Wednesdays!

On another note, I am handing my notice in at work today so am really nervous cos they can be a bit nasty (one of the reasons I'm leaving) so am expecting a bit of s**t :(

They weren't too bad (at least to my face) so better than expected - phew! I'm starting with a supply teaching agency once term starts as a teaching assistant and will be working mostly with children/young people with SEN.
Good luck with the TA supply work Laurel. I do supply teaching and it very much depends on the individual school whether I like it or not.

Good luck with the TA work, I would imagine it can be incredibly rewarding!I'm starting a new job the week after next. I was made redundant very suddenly in June and have been temping since, and now will be starting a temp-to-(hopefully) perm role.
May be a bit quiet over the next few days, have the parents visiting

Sounds great - don't get too much jam on the books though!
Looking after the two granddaughters this weekend during the day while my son tries to get ahead with the renovations to his new house. We have been out and bought fabric and are going to make them a bag each and a new stuffed toy for the dog! Where do you pick your fruit Laurel? Felton, just north of Morpeth has started advertising that the picking is starting there Although I've never gone there I know a lot of "preservers"who do.
That sounds fun but tiring. I'm very impressed with all the creativity thats going on this weekend - Laurel with her preserves and Hilary and granddaughters with their bag and toy making! The only thing I'm likely to make this weekend is a mess :0)

@ Lee - ha ha I'm not really creative - I just like my scran (scran = food) and I can follow a recipe!
The toy making was a laugh. The 7 year old was very good, the 3 year old less so. My contribution was mixed. It's years, about 15 since I made a stuffed toy. The plan was to make a spider but we ran out of steam at four legs. The 7 year old said it looked more like a person so we decided not to tell anyone it was meant to be a spider and say it was going to be a scarecrow all along. Hope we have better luck with the bags! The dog likes it anyway!
I prefer scarecrows to spiders anyway!
Hope everyone had a great long weekend - we spent some pleasant hours in various beer gardens which we reached by tandem power and much of the rest of the time relaxing in our own garden. Back to school tomorrow.
I'm so excited, booked my Cheltenham Literature Festival tickets yesterday :) Well, first batch, at least - Even though I've spent a fortune I shall most likely decide I simply must see something else too!Would have loved to have been able to see all the talks on Ancient History/Classics but there all on a Friday and I doubt I'll be able to get the time off work. Luckily Mary Beard is there on a Sunday so I am going to her talk.
I'm also going to see a talk on Live Aid, Midge Ure is one of the speakers, and also going to see Barry Norman, which I'm quite excited about - the BBC Film review programme has never been the same since he left
Sounds great Ellie, I picked up the brochure the other day and amazed all my work colleagues by announcing that Bruno Mars was going to be there. By their reaction I gathered that I'd got the name wrong - I mean't Craig Revel Horwood!!
