lol, you made me hungry too - had to make myself a bacon and egg sarnie with brown sauce - very nice;)

Must be quite warm in Germnay then Jenny, if you're sitting on the balcony? Absolutely freezing here, we had a lovely thick frost this morning

That was a fun programme wasn't it?

Angela | 738 comments Hello loves! We are in the middle if a dire heat wave here in Melbourne so as soon as that ends my internet will be pumping at 100% and I'll be back for chats, George Orwell, persuasion and all the other stuff I love about this group :)

I hope everyone has a happy weekend!

Enjoy the sunshine Angela, hope it's not too hot for you ;)

message 560: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooh - we've been seeing reports of that on the news- water bottles melting, ball boys fainting and tennis player vomiting - it doesn't look very pleasant - hope you are managing to keep cool.

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
oh dear - I hadn't a clue about that when I made the above comment, I hope it's over soon in that case!

message 562: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Thanks lovelies :)

The cool change has finally started so hopefully all the fires will die down and everyone will be safe again...

And I'll be able to catch some shut eye!

message 563: by [deleted user] (new)

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you all. We've got nothing but rain - but I wouldn't swap it for the temperatures you've been suffering!

Hope so!

Just to let everyone know that , as the general consensus is that George Orwells diary is dull, dull, deadly dull. I have moved things along a bit. There are no entries for feb as poor George has the flu. in March and April George is back in the Uk and things are a bit more interesting and at the end of April, with the war beginning to make itself felt, the entries are longer and much more exciting. I have therefore posted all of March's entries today and will post most of April tomorrow, and then start posting one a day again :0)

Ok sounds like a good idea, although we will miss the egg-related jokes ;)

message 567: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) There were egg-related jokes? How did I miss those?

message 568: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Laurel - Don't worry - the egg count continues :0)

@ Jenny - I've been posting one entry a day of George Orwell's diary (also Samuel Pepys' diary and Captain Scott's Journal of his final expedition to the South Pole - all in the "the Diaries and Journals" folder). Sadly George has mainly confined his writings to the number of eggs his hens have laid, leading to numerous eggy jokes (or yolks).

message 569: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) *sprints over to the respective thread*

message 570: by [deleted user] (new)

Be warned - many of the jokes are eggs-cruciating. :0)

message 571: by [deleted user] (new)

Just found this article about aspiring '50s actress Vikki "the back" Dougan - known for her provocatively cut backless dresses - there are some great shots of her wandering down a New York Street causing shock and joy to passers by. Some of the men look like they've just received all their Christmas presents rolled into one !

Here are some lovely pictures of Jimi Hendrix at his colourful best

message 574: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments I've just downloaded a new free app called Houzz and can see within 5m it's going to become my new obsession. It's a interior design app with some fantastic discussion boards for people who are looking for ideas for their home. People seem to post a picture and a problem and they get instant ideas from a vast community of people into interior design. I love it!

message 575: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds great Tracey - I don't think I'll be sending in any pictures of my house though - they'd probably want to feature it on one of those programmes about obsessive hoarders!

message 576: by [deleted user] (new)

My link to Jimi's pictures has disappeared! Here it is http://www.messynessychic.com/2014/01...

Lol I like that! Although I would suggest maybe not trying that one on the boss as an excuse for daydreaming - doubt it will go down well ;)
Loved the Hendrix pic's as well Lee - only Jimi could manage to wear those mad getup's and still look hot!

message 580: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I can imagine my bosses expression if I came out with that one.
Jimi's style is definitely not advisable for us mere mortals - by the way - the flat he used to own in London, now owned by The Handel Museum (he used to live next door) is going to be restored to it's former glorious hendrixness. It should be groovy.

I am feeling your pain Angela - went back yesterday after a week off! Hope it all goes ok and the weekend isn't too far away now :)

message 587: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments Thanks Laurel - yesterday was depressing. I was like a little kid, just thinking 'I want to go home!!!' haha! Hope you are holding up ok too :)

message 588: by [deleted user] (new)

Hope you two are feeling a bit more cheerful today (half way through :0) ) did you get up to anything exciting while you were off?

message 589: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments The workday is finished in Aus so I'm feeling much chirpier :-) I just pottered around lots on my holidays, reading and drinking coffee and watching movies and writing and cooking... Sigh.

Did you have any time away Lee?

message 590: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments Was reading last night about the excavation of the statues on Easter Island. Some of them are incredibly big and their bodies are buried metres underground. Photos 1-3 in the Field Season V show this well. http://www.eisp.org/category/archaeol...

Just chilling and catching up with folks that I haven't seen cos of all the Christmas mentalness! I'm off tomorrow (yay!) cos obviously I'll be working the weekend as usual so it wasn't too much to get through.
Glad you had a nice time Angela :)
Tracey - thanks for the link, the Easter Island statues are cool!

message 592: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Angela - my Christmas hols seem a long time ago now - I spent most of them reading and watching films.
@ Tracey - are the statues that they are excavating unfinished or were they buried in the quarry after they had been carved?

message 593: by [deleted user] (new)

Quick folks - bargains galore on amazon. -They've reduced a whole load of past Costa prizewinners. if you haven't already read "The Hand that First Held Mine" I highly recommend it - and there's some more Stalin for Hilary :0)

message 594: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Thanks Lee! the book about Stalin is actually one of the three book set that I have. But I have snatched the Clive James poetry book. I never realised he was a poet at all!

message 595: by [deleted user] (new)

No, nor me.

message 596: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments Laurel & Lee - re the statues, I think there are quite a lot over the island but they are all showing just from the neck up. What the archeologists wanted to know was how far down they went and I think there's been a big surprise because the statues are not just heads, there are full bodies that are buried in the ground. How on earth they were carved and buried heaven knows. Yet another mystery from the world of ancient civilisations.

Stop it Lee! Now I've gone and bought the Maggie Farell book, the one about Stalin and 2 poetry collections lol!

message 598: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments @ Laurel you won't regret it. The O'Farrell book is very good and the Stalin interesting. I'm looking forward to reading Clive James poetry, I'm intrigued.

message 599: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Laurel - Sorry :0)
@ Tracey - wow - that's fascinating - I never knew that.

I've heard good things about O'Farrell so am looking forward to it. I got the Robin Robertson book as that's a poet I've never heard of but I liked the writeup. And that led me to The Forward Book of Poetry 2014 which I went to look at but accidently pressed the 1click button by mistake (dangerous this instant downloading business) but it looked good so have kept it ;)

Will be interested to know what the Clive James one is like, I'm torn about buying his version of Dante or just getting the Oxford or Penguin classics version which will be mich cheaper.
