I am so full! It was my works Christmas dinner today - it was lovely but I can't move now!

Oooh lovely! Glad you had fun! Has everyone finished their Christmas shopping yet??

message 455: by [deleted user] (new)

All done thanks to amazon :0)- just got to wrap everything up now.

message 456: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Each year my Christmas preparations get later and more chaotic. I've sort of finished but only due to people getting totally unimaginative gifts. Cards not posted, decorations not up, shameful really!!

message 457: by [deleted user] (new)

You haven't been buying everyone socks have you?

message 458: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
I'm glad it's not just me who's unorganised Hilary! haven't finished either

message 459: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments I think I'm pretty much sorted this year. First time ever as I'm often still getting last minute bits on Christmas Eve.

message 460: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
It just sneaks up on you though doesn't it? One minute it's weeks away and then you turn round and there's only a few days to go....

message 461: by [deleted user] (new)

Perhaps personal Christmas shoppers are the answer:0)

message 462: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Personal Christmas shoppers are a great idea, Lee, and no I haven't bought everyone socks, just ordinary things which I think they'd like but probably aren't what I would buy if I have it more thought. One of the problems is that I am so far from any shops. Other years I have done much of it online but this year I have been away from home so much that I've been concerned about deliveries coming and going missing. Does that just sound like an excuse rather than a reason?

message 463: by [deleted user] (new)

No, not at all - coming home and finding one of those "we tried to deliver this but you weren't in" cards is just such a pain as is trying to collect the parcel or rearrange delivery,

message 464: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) My neighbours have been brilliant, I've ordered a lot online this month and they've taken all of it in for me. The other day my neighbour came out practically sinking under several sizeable boxes all addressed to me!

message 465: by [deleted user] (new)

What nice neighbours - you'll have to treat them to some wine and walnuts :0)

message 466: by [deleted user] (new)

Just discovered that The Signature of All Things - which I've seen loads of good reviews of, is only £1.59 on kindle at the moment
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0...

message 467: by [deleted user] (new)

The Lowland and Burial Rites are much reduced also.

message 468: by [deleted user] (new)

Just realised that these are all from Amazons 12 Days of Christmas Sale http://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=sr_aj?n...

I particularly recommend The Still Point http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_n...

message 469: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok - my last post on this topic (for the time being) I promise - but I just came across this site that does a daily round up of bargain kindle books !

Lol the above website should come with a health warning for your tbr list!

I'm not at work till 5 today so quickly trying to do some baking for Christmas - problem is I started with making some pate and it's really too early for chicken livers! yuck :( At least it's out of the way now, on to the fun stuff!

message 471: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooh icky

message 472: by [deleted user] (new)

For all of you who like watching ghost stories - I've just added links to some of the scariest tv adaptations I can remember - in response to a Guardian Article about favourite ghost stories.
They're under Best Ghost Stories in Books and Reading - enjoy - but don't expect to sleep too well afterwards.

So how was everyone's Christmas? Hope you all had a lovely time and got lots of nice new books to read next year ;)

message 479: by [deleted user] (new)

I've had a lovely time thank you - lots of old Christmas specials and even older films and my first ever Moomins book (the television series used to frighten me!) ? What did you think of the new M R James ? I quite enjoyed it but I didn't think it was as terrifying as Oh Whistle (tremble) or Lost Hearts (shudder).
Have you got much more time off, Laurel?

message 480: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Haven't seen the M R James yet - we were out at my brothers when it was on and haven't had a chance to watch it on iplayer just yet. Was only off Christmas day, had to be back at work yesterday to make coffee for all the people going to the boxing day sales but am off new years eve and new years day so that's something to look forward to!

message 481: by [deleted user] (new)

You'd think that people could stay away from the shops for at least one more day! My brother is working Christmas - but at least he's a nurse and looking after people who genuinely need help and not those who can't bear to spend more than one day not shopping! Sorry rant over now.

message 482: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Ha ha if you think that was a rant you should have seen us yesterday morning! We were not impressed. Bless your brother as well - he's making a difference :)

message 483: by [deleted user] (new)

I just wish it was still the way things we're when I was little, when all the shops stayed closed from Christmas Eve evening till (I think) New Year's Day - and even then it was only the big furniture shops that opened.

message 484: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) We went out for a meal yesterday, lovely pub that just happened to be close to an Asda. The supermarket car park was packed when we got to the pub, but had emptied considerably by the time we left (about 2.5 hours later). How can people possibly need to do a shop again? The supermarkets were closed for ONE DAY!!

message 485: by [deleted user] (new)

I know - what can you run out of in one day?

message 486: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Crazy isn't it? I don't get it... has been even busier today :(

message 487: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Just seen this posted on Twitter, about how some otherwise obsolete old words have survived by dint of much-used phrases http://m.mentalfloss.com/article.php?... . I found the wend/went - go/gaed bit interesting, always thought there was something wrong there! I want to reintroduce 'gaed'! I gaed for a walk into town today :)

message 488: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Ellie, that's fascinating - Particularly the origins of giving some one short shrift.

message 489: by [deleted user] (new)

Everyone off to New Years Eve parties tonight? we're staying in with some drinks and old films.
Any New Years Resolutions? Mine is to try and spend less time adding to my to read list and more time getting through it - I fear that I'm doomed to failure though.

message 490: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Quiet night in for me back in my own home after a lovely family Christmas. I always make resolutions and very rarely manage to keep them but it doesn't stop me making them again. Happy New Year everyone!

message 491: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, Happy New Year!

message 492: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) I'm having a quiet night. Partly because I've had a splitting headache all day, partly because I'm not a big one for parties.

message 493: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Ellie - poor you I hope you feel better soon :0)

message 494: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Hope the headache goes soon Ellie, I'm prone to them too and they really can make life miserable.

Hope you're feeling better soon Ellie! I'm hiding out at home as well, I'm not very keen on New Year celebrations.

Wishing you all All the very Best for 2014!

message 496: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Thanks all, I reckon it's actually because I've done so little in the last week! My body isn't used to it. Or it's a delayed hangover from Christmas and Boxing Day :) I will see the New Year in, then bed at 12.01 :)

message 497: by [deleted user] (new)

Ho Hum - it's the 1st day of 2014 - here is something cheering for those of you who, like me, always find New Years Day slightly depressing
