Multi-generational fantasy series, Scotland-like land, a sword... [s]

I'm trying to remember the name of a series set in a fantasy world similar to Europe, where the main characters are from a Scotland-like land, and they travel (are exiled?) to a mainland country. They had red hair, as I recall. There was something about an ancestral sword. The evil character was a really scary sorceress who acquired power by slowly killing innocents and feeding off their fear and pain. I read these in the mid to late 1990s.

I remember that the cover had people in tartan either kilts or sashes. The author may start with a C or K.

I don't remember any sorceress in these, but I read them a long while ago and wouldn't rule it out.
