Alb | 1 comments I just finished Where'd You Go Bernadette? Currently reading Await Your Reply and have The Dinner on deck.

Shona (anovelobsession) | 178 comments Just finished And the Mountains Echoed which I absolutely LOVED and The Never List which I hated. Of course I probably judged it a little unfairly as nothing could have compared to And The Mountains Echoed.
Also just took a quick trip to Portland to visit my daughter and I got to stop at Powell's :). Picked up The Light in the Ruins and A Marker to Measure Drift. Now am looking forward to spending the rest of my vacation with Chris Bohjalian :)

Happy reading all!

Chanda, I read Bag of Bones by Stephen King last year. It was my first time I've read Stephen King. It was quite good. Hope you enjoy it. Here's my review:

Dawn,

The Sparrow is definitely in my top five novels. I'm going to read the sequel, Children of God, in the next few weeks or so. I'm looking forward to getting back into that world.

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Ok, I finished Tampa by Alissa Nutting . I'm not sure what else to say. I'm glad it's over. I have great respect for Nutting's skill at getting into the mind of a sociopath, but that's about the best I can say. I feel the need to go take a few showers.

Dawn | 187 comments After finishing Tampa by Alissa Nutting this morning I think I'll do some re-arranging. Next up was GOING to be My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf , but I think that might be a little too much sociopathy for one weekend. I just picked up We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson at the library - I think I'll go there instead.

Oh! I love We Have Always Lived in the Castle (by Shirley Jackson!) I listened to the audiobook edition and Bernadette Dunne nailed it, IMO! And, or course, The Haunting of Hill House, the quintessential haunted house story that I suspect is the actual mother of all haunted house stories that we are now familiar with. Hmmm, I have a collection of Shirley Jackson stories around here that I really should dig up! :-)

message 123: by Chanda2426 (new)

Chanda2426 | 136 comments Realized yesterday, 100 pages in, that I had already read Bag of Bones by Stephen King . Ugh! So I picked up a Goodreads giveaway — Still Missing by Chevy Stevens . Hope to have it done by tomorrow! Can't wait for Night Film by Marisha Pessl !!
Happy reading!!

message 124: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Schultz | 8 comments I am reading The Storyteller by Midi Picoult

message 125: by Bill (new)

Bill Paugh I just finished Daniel Silva's The Kill Artist. I thought he did a good job developing the story and pacing the action. I also just finished the Shining by Stephen King. I had never read it and wanted to do so before King's new book comes out in September.

I just started the Night Film this morning. I am not far into the book, but I am enjoying it. I heard about the interactive features on the podcast, so I did download the app and scanned the first two symbols. It does work on the ebook. I think it is a creative feature and did help make the notion that Cordova's films are dangerous seem more realistic.

message 126: by Patti (new)

Patti (pattihenger) | 23 comments Finished some Booktopia Petoskey novels and catching up on all the old BOTNS podcasts. Reading The Invisible Bridge - Ann's favorite novel of 2010 and its so amazing....in my top 5 books and I'm only halfway done!

I loved The Invisible Bridge

message 128: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ I have finished a few books in the last week or so:

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah Firefly Lane - a quick and easy read about two friends that endure many hardships from childhood into adulthood.

Velva Jean Learns to Fly by Jennifer Niven Velva Jean Learns to Fly - an interesting book about the history of Women's Air Force Service Pilots (the first women to fly military air craft).

Child of God by Cormac McCarthy Child of God - a character sketch of a disturbed loner in the backwoods of Tennessee. Spare writing, but definitely creepy.

Everything Changes by Jonathan Tropper Everything Changes - a quick read about a man that has it all, but feels like something is missing and takes steps to make his life whole.

I am now reading We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves.

message 129: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I finished The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie
and How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran .

In March I started A Storm of Swords Steel and Snow (A Song of Ice and Fire #3, Part 1 of 2) by George R.R. Martin but stopped reading it because I didn't want to know what was going to happen while watching the series on TV...but I'm back to reading it...and am loving every minute of it!

message 130: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Finished up On the Road, and I picked up Big Sur to continue my Jack Kerouac education. It will have to be put on the back burner though, since Booktopia Petoskey is approaching rapidly and I have a stack of books I'd like to get through before then! To start, I'm reading The Dog Stars and I've just downloaded The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat on audio!

message 131: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) | 557 comments Lisa-I just finished A Storm of Swords....I have only seen Season 1 of the series .....the book was great but it took me most of the summer to read it!! Enjoy!

message 132: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 51 comments I'm having a great week, reading NOS4A2 during the day and The Cuckoo's Calling at nighttime. I tried reading NOS4A2 at night but got too spooked! Thoroughly enjoying both books.

message 133: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 187 comments About 60 pages into The Infatuations by Javier Marías . And hmmm ... I just don't know yet. Is it going anywhere? Does it need to? But the writing is wonderful enough to keep me reading...

message 140: by PrimalAwakening (new)

PrimalAwakening | 26 comments Hi y'all

I just finished Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight and found it a good read-for me it was a page turner as I was eager to see things unfold and the relationships of the daughter (Amelia), even though I found I was frustrated at the mother (Kate) every step of the way. Now I'm reading The Humans by Matt Haig and Ex-Heroes by Peter Cilnes-both are great but different so far.

Read 250 pages of Lonesome Dove! Put it down, just temporarily, to move onto Pure by Julianna Baggott -- a book I've been wanting to read for more than a year.

I will return to Lonesome Dove, but I"m not sure when. So much I want to read that I saved for vacation ... I need another month off!

message 144: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I am again overwhelmed with library ebooks! I have all of the following from the library right now:
The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison - I'm enjoying this a lot.

Finn by Jon Clinch - probably will return this and try it again in the future

A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell - maybe same with this one

The House Girl by Tara Conklin

The Son by Philipp Meyer

The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

The last 4 I haven't started yet. I'm having such good luck with the library recently.

Marion Hill (kammbia1) In honor of his passing, I've decided to read Valdez Is Coming by Elmore Leonard .

I have not read an Elmore Leonard novel before and this story was recommended to me as one of his best non-crime fiction novels.

FYI, deleted a message from KyleB ... he raved about a book in a way that sounded a bit odd to me, so I looked into his profile and saw that he joined this group and several others just before posting similar messages to all of them about this one book. He also posted in multiple threads in this group about the book. And the only messages he posted on any GR groups was promoting that book. So I'm calling it spam, and deleted the message.

message 150: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Good job Ann - I'm a moderator on a non-GR board and you just learn to have an eye for those - just odd looking things that make you go "hmmmm". I'm sure you were right!
