message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I am in the middle of my classic fantasy reading. Book #3 of Elric saga - The Weird of the White Wolf - for me at the moment.

message 3: by Ty (new)

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 165 comments I'm still in the middle of The Mote in God's Eye, and while I wait for my copy of The Curse of Chalion to arrive, I'll start I Am Legend and The Wheelman.

message 4: by Shaun (new)

Shaun | 4 comments Currently reading abbadon's gate.

Joe Informatico (joeinformatico) | 888 comments Almost halfway through The Curse of Chalion; hoping to have it done by the weekend. After that, Carrie, Six-Gun Snow White, and if I have time, maybe I can finally get to The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Rosemary and Rue, and start The Reality Dysfunction.

message 7: by Mpauli (new)

Mpauli Currently reading Ship of Magic, Black Sun Rising and The Forge of Darkness on my own.

I'm doing the reread of The Bonehunters with the Malazan group and later this month Last Argument of Kings with another book club.

If I'm able to finish them all, I'm going to look into The Thousand Names and of course into The Curse of Chalion.

message 8: by Rob (last edited Aug 01, 2013 09:12AM) (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) I'm reading House of Chains (just under half way done) and about to start listening toOne of Our Thursdays Is Missing. I have Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln on deck on audiobook as well. Just finished listening to Fuzzy Nation which I highly recommend. I may skip/delay reading the sword and laser for this month to jump into the next Malazan book once I finish House of Chains. Going for "complete immersion" mode.

Brandon | 33 comments I'm going to be reading the Eisenhorn Omnibus this month. I love how Dan Abnett writes.

message 10: by Aildiin (last edited Aug 01, 2013 10:01AM) (new)

Aildiin | 150 comments Reading King of Thorns.
Next is the re-read of The Bonehunters and then I will tackle The Lions Of Lucerne, I want to see how Brad Thor compares to Clancy, Lee Child and Vynce Flynn.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Feeling like some Harry Potter so Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire it is.

message 12: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 588 comments I put The Way of Kings on hold to tackle The Curse of Chalion (which was awesome btw). Just as I was finishing it yesterday my hold at the ebook library for The Daylight War became available. Since I've been waiting a while for that one I'm going to tackle it quick before going back to Way of Kings.

message 13: by Katy (new)

Katy | 25 comments I just finished The Thousand Names, which I loved. And now, I'm delving back into The Way of Kings, since I read it when it first came out, and need to get ready for Words of Radiance. I'm also reading a book of Norse mythology on the side.

message 14: by Geoff (new)

Geoff (geoffgreer) Finishing the Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set by Brandon Sanderson and The Eye of God: A Sigma Force Novel by James Rollins.

I've got that and the GG omnibus sitting on my shelf begging to be read.

message 16: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Hansen (malazanshadowdancer) | 64 comments I finished Prince of Thorns and I just ordered King of Thorns since I absolutely loved the first one!

I'm still reading Toll the Hounds, since I've been away from home a lot so I haven't had it with me due to its sheer size...

I'm also reading The Chronicles of the Black Company, finished the first "book". I haven't read further, since I'm a beta-reader on a book as well..

So...that would be seven books then?

message 20: by T.R. (new)

T.R. Goodman (trgoodman) | 39 comments Working on the shelf of shame. Just finished Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. After I finish The Curse of Chalion, I'll probably read the Mistborn series.

message 21: by Sheila Jean (last edited Aug 01, 2013 03:29PM) (new)

Sheila Jean | 330 comments I'm listening to The Name of the Wind in the car during my commute and Mockingjay whenever I'm in the car with my husband.

I'm also part way through Abaddon's Gate and Going Under. I'll also probably read Chasing the Dragon and possibly Endymion.

But technically it's 8, cause I'm still listening to
The Wise Man's Fear.
If I keep up my pace in listening to this one while falling asleep with an average gain between 5-10 minutes per night, me currently reading this book might be a recurring joke over the next couple of months...

Elantris was great. My only complaint is that the Hrathen chapters weren't as interesting as Raoden and Sarene's.

Looking forward to Mistborn.

message 26: by David Sven (new)

David Sven (gorro) | 1582 comments Wise Man's Fear is false advertising. It's supposed to be a day of story telling but the Audio goes for over 40 hours. I loved Kingkiller on Audible. I could listen to Rupert Degas all day.

I agree with that, though I thought Hrathen was the only truly multidimensional character in the book. I still liked Raoden and Sarene.

Definitely the deepest and best-developed character. I think the problem was that his chapters had less "action" than the others and a lot more internal monologue.

Laura (conundrum44) | 109 comments I just started Vampire Hunter D Volume 16. D is so gorgeous he makes straight men swoon and moonbeams bashful. He is beautiful to the point of violence... and there's more that can be said, but I forget it all.

message 30: by Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth (last edited Aug 02, 2013 12:17AM) (new)

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I've been slowly working through a mass of books I already own. My plan is to aim to have read all the books purchased this year before the next year begins (because I really shouldn't keep buying when I have so much to read). This means I have rather a lot of reading to do, especially since I purchased 8 books this month alone after making the above decision. Well, they were on special offer. Shut up, it's not my fault!. Wait, 9 books, I wasn't counting this month's book pick. >.<

So, for this month I will finish Royal Assassin, move on to Assassin's Quest, read through The Curse of Chalion and make a start on Boneshaker and maybe if I get all that finished in time, I'll get to Throne of Glass which I picked up on a kindle daily deal recently because, well, the cover looked cool. Yeah, lame, I know. For clarification, the cover was not this one Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas . That one is lame. Mine is prettier. Shut up!

Oh, and I'm also listening to the 4th Dresden Book. Which is why I will probably become known locally as that weird girl who keeps cracking up laughing for no apparent reason while walking to work.

I'm doing the audio of these. I love James Marsters narration - I think he's really improved since the first two books

I'm badly missing him for Ghost Story. I'm almost done though and he's back for Cold Days!

Nico (darkybald) | 30 comments I just finished The Dreaming Void and it was so great I immediately ordered the next two books in the series.
Starting Wolves of the Calla I sadly noticed that Frank Muller the great narrator of the first four books died in a motorcycle accident in 2001 and couldn't finish the series :(

Yeah. George Guidell isn't a terrible replacement (in fact I like his voice better for Roland), but it's just not the same. Muller's voices for Eddie and Susannah are greatly missed in the final 3 books.

message 36: by Ben (new)

Ben Rowe (benwickens) just picked up The Way of Kings and The Killing Moon from the library so will probably jump between them, Chalion and various stuff on my e-reader like Alif the Unseen. Short fiction wise I am thinking of checking out some of the stuff on Tor.com, there is a Jeffrey Ford story that sounds good and I also spotted a few others that I might enjoy giving a try. Doing a couple of 8 hour train journeys so may be a good time to finally get round to reading The Name of the Wind

message 39: by Vincent (new)

Vincent Asaro (vincentasaro) | 49 comments I'm reading Yukio Mishima's Spring Snow, which isn't genre but is worth mentioning.

I am really excited about Dark Horse's Star Wars Legacy Volume II, illustrated by Gabriel Hardman, a beautiful and classic comic in the tradition of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and (of course) Star Wars.

I just re-read The Sword of Shannara for the umpteenth time, the annotated edition. I'm excited to start the Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy now.

I just finished re-reading The Island of Doctor Moreau (research for a novella) and am planning to re-read War of the Worlds & The Time Machine.

I just finished Vol 3 of The Wheel of Time and am about to start Vol 4, my first hardcover read in the series!

I dug up a fun old space opera, The Star Kings, by Edmond Hamilton (Captain Future).

Am also re-reading Final Crisis and a slew of other Grant Morrison comics.

I also just finished re-reading the Metabarons, Technopriests & Incal comics (the English ones anyway) by Jodorowsky. If you haven't read these, nab the Humanoids Press reprints and try it -- this is top notch brilliant mind bending space fantasy!

I loved TOTGP and this is good too but It's not for everyone. I'm about 50 pages in and it's mostly been description and introspection. I guess it's like "Dark Proust" ha ha! I'm enjoying it so far :)

message 43: by Ben (new)

Ben Rowe (benwickens) I didnt like TOTGP - I have a psychotherapy background and the mental health stuff didnt ring true for me so I gave it up 50 or so pages in but I know it is a book that many others have loved. I did enjoy the sailor who fell from grace from the sea but overall there are other Japanese writers such as Soseki and Kowabata that I have loved much more. One of my favorite fantasy writers Jeffrey Ford speaks about his favorite Japanese writers here which might be of interest to some people http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/blog/2012/0...

While we're on the subject, all SF fans should read Starship & Haiku by SP Somtow! (Somtow is Thai but S&H takes place in Japan.)

I noticed that as well, but do we know how many hours are in a Kingkiller Day. It could be a 30+ hour day. A decent portion of the book takes place in the Inn after all, so those pages don't count.

Sounds interesting. :) My fav Japanese book would probably be Masks by Enchi Fumiko. There is the barest hint of the supernatural in there, so perhaps it would appeal to people on this thread.

Thanks for the link, Ben. I agree about Woman in the Dunes by Abe Kobo. :D

I feel I have diverted this thread. Carry on.

message 50: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 116 comments I'm listening to Deadlocked on audio, I can't believe I'm almost done with The Southern Vampire Mysteries! There's been a few bumps, but overall it's been an enjoyable series. I'm also reading The Golem and the Jinni and I was hooked right away.

I have Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking & The Ocean at the End of the Lane (audio) out on loan from the library so I plan on reading those this month. I'm not sure what I'll start next on my Kindle, probably The Ripple Effect (Doctor Who short), Redshirts, or Grimm's Fairy Tales.
