Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'll start When She Woke next. After reading Mudbound which I loved and Aftermirth which I really liked, I'm very much looking forward to this one. I know several of you read it and gave it 4 or 5 stars.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished The Queen of Bedlam. While it was a bit slow to get into it, I ended up really enjoying it and am looking forward to the next two books in the series.

I've started The Round House and almost gave up within the first 30 minutes. I didn't think I was going to be able to tolerate the narrator. But, after reading some of the reviews recommending to preserve, I decided to continue and don't find him as distracting any more. This is my R book for the Alphabet challenge.

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments I finished The White, a work of historical fiction, based on the life of 16 yr old Mary Jemison, who was captured by Shawnee indians in 1758. A very interesting book. I have now moved onto The Finkler Question

message 1060: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Like the first book this mystery was yet again like taking the long way home. Took a little while to figure out where it was heading but I enjoyed it not as much as the first one but it was still good. I like how each book gets a little shorter than the previous book. Ever since the brief meeting of mister slaughter at the asylum ive been racing to start book 3 to learn more about him. I think its gonna be a good one.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished When She Woke, I found it hard to put down. I reviewed it here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

My next book will be The Snow Child for the monthly read.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I just finished The Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti. This was my little review:

"You cannot go back and make a new start, but you can start now and make a new ending."

This quote brought tear to my eyes. The Almond Tree is a story of sacrifice and perseverance. But first of all is a story of belief, hope and love. Is Ichmad Hamid's travel from poverty and necessity in a Palestinian village to his dream of become not only a great scientist but an example of tolerance and forgiveness.
Michelle Cohen Corasanti's novel lead us through Ichmad's thoughts, his struggles, his sorrows, and let us see how his fruitful outcome comes from his denial to see enemies in the people surrounding him, and the conviction that the only way is build together.

I'm starting now To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

Now moving on to Sister by Rosamund Lupton on audiobook. I'm still reading Doctor Sleep (The Shining, #2) by Stephen King which I'm really enjoying - need to finish it soon so I can finish my alphabet.

I think I'll start it tomorrow morning. Today I had to finish my top ten book of
The Blood Gospel which I was a bit disappointed with. The pace wasn't that which I've come to know from Rollins. I will note there is a lot of religion which some have found offensive. I did not. The story just didn't grab me like I thought it would the book didn't have a definitive end to it instead left off for book 2 to start with. I'll continue the series with a hopr book 2 when it comes out intrigues me a bit more.

message 1071: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I picked up The Blood Gospel as a gift for a friend because she's quite infatuated with James Rollins. It turned out that she already had the book and told me to keep it. I've never read any of his books. The religion could put me off, but I shall see.

Really glad you liked Burial Rites. I just hear more and more amazing things about that book.

Interested in your thoughts on The Collector. I had to read it in year 12 at school. I think it would be a book I would quite enjoy now, but as a very different person at 17 I had very mixed feelings about it.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I started book 5 of the sacketts saga Ride the River and book 4 ofatthew Corbett The Providence Rider which has me fully enjoying it so far. Also a brief disclaimer on Mister Slaughter if you enjoy breakfast sausage or perhaps kielbasa or hot sausage whatever be warned this contains a certain sausage incident which may make sausage unappetizing to you for a while so indulge before starting the book

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments This weekend I finished Baguettes chinoises my X book. I cannot remember who I stole the idea from but i am really glad I did. And my Y book, Aunty Lee's Delights: a cute cozy.

I am still listening to the latest Dexter book, Dexter's Final Cut. Read by the author (good narration), still the funny line that makes you smile. But i find the storyline, thin as it is, lacking. Ah well.

I just put my monthly challenge book The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie in my bag as a mobile book and tonight i will start my Z book, El juego del ángel.

I've just finished The Last Sherlock Holmes Story which was absolutely epic. the most enormous bombshell landed somewhere 2/3 in and was stunning in it's inventiveness. Got to be the best "spin off" type book i have ever read.

Also on the go I have X Isle which I imagine might be better if I was a teenage boy... but it is an X and it is almost done.

I'm reading Jokerman 8 by Richard Melo. I'm enjoying it as much as his last novel Happy Talk: A Novel which I've read a few months ago. It's a different thing to read, funny, and some times hilarious.

I read this in April, and thought it was clever. I later read the next in the series and probably won'r be continuing. Once the novelty wore off, the Countess and her maid were no longer amusing.

This first in the series was entertaining..

message 1089: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments There are two main reasons Sanderson is rising to the head of the class in fantasy. The ability to write innovative interesting stories. Creative magic systems and variety like Steelheart. The second reason is he understands people don't want to wait 5 years in between books as is such a fad in epic fantasy. He may take a while between books in a series but will probably put out a bunch of different books in the meantime.

And the series of books are Chunsters too. You could do the entire year's challenge just reading Sanderson.

message 1091: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 05, 2013 04:52AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments I have written this 3 times and it won't let me. It combines and deletes paragraphs.

So, none of this seems very important anymore

I haven't read any Sanderson myself, i should. I have listened to bits and pieces, due to Lexx just finishing all his books. Narrator doesn't do it for me. He agrees with you by the way about the magic systems.

I will argue with you though on the second point. I don't personally want the book industry to end up like the music industry. Contracts to produce X amounts of products in Y amount of years. it works for some people, but more often than not, it really doesn't. Sanderson is a good example of someone it seems to, as people love what he produces. You can argue if it is quality but people love it. Good indication.

I understand readers though who wait forever for new books or series. I really do. I totally one of them. But I also empathise with people say like George R.R. Martin
who used to have only thousands of fans banging on their door for more, but able to understand that 900pp takes time. Now he has millions and millions due to the show, that are all screaming for more. Talk about public performance issues!!

I agree an author needs to take however long they need to produce quality . I was simply saying it is nice to have one who is fairly speedy. I also would be surprised if 5 or 10 years from now he is still able to produce in such abundance.

grin. That's what got me interested in him as well.

But I wasn't as brave as you. I started with The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle: The Thing Beneath the Bed, which was so cute, I almost went out and adopted a child!
