Quit your lollygagging then and get reading! Just kidding - I need 20 books to complete all and sundry including the Goodreads challenge. It's not likely to happen. I'm not that fast of a reader.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's 5 books a week Almeta! Good luck :)

I started Wildflower Hill today for the monthly read. I'm also still (for the past 2,5 weeks) reading The Name of the Wind. I usually don't need that much time to finish a book, but it's to heavy to take with me on the train every day so I only read it in the evening and in the weekend. And I haven't been reading that much at home lately.. I'm almost halfway through now I think. I don't know if it's the book or my limited reading time, but it seems a bit slow (although not in a bad way). I really like the book when I'm reading it and I want to read more, even though it seems not that much has happened in the first 300 pages. But when I'm not reading it, I don't feel a very strong urge to continue reading, I can easily not pick it up for a couple of days. Don't know what's going on..

Eeeek!

I just analyzed my books for the rest of the year, and am, myself, going to need analysis.☻

To complete at least the second task in the Alphabet Challenge, my Countdown Challenge, my Other-Worldly Challenge AND December's Group Read and Challenge, I will need to read 42 books by the end of the year.

Which will also just barely squeak by my 2013 Goodreads Challenge goal.

I know what you mean (although my book cliff is not quite as high as yours!). I have 9 books left to finish my second alphabet and 2 RL book club reads. And that assumes i don;t do any challenge or group reads. All to be finished in less than 2 months. The only one I am ahead on is the year long, where I'm 2 books shy of my target.

I may well pass on next year's year-long challenge, it has, at times, felt a bit restrictive.

I stopped thinking about it. I may hyperventilate. I thought my W book would be a quick read. Brent Weeks is one of my favorite Fantasy author after all. Well, life got in the way. While i am aware that it's just for fun, I am sooooooo close to finishing my 1st alphabet...

Peggy I read Wildflower Hill last summer and I loved it. It was such a moving story my heart hurt for the main character and I ended up weeping (which I never do) for her.

Kimberly | 2033 comments I finished Cemetery Dance (Pendergast, #9) by Douglas Preston and really enjoyed it, a 4 star read for me.
Now I'm going to start Return To Atlantis (Nina Wilde & Eddie Chase, #8) by Andy McDermott and Fever Dream (Pendergast, #10) by Douglas Preston

message 862: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well I think we are all feeling the pressure to finish our various challenges by the sounds of it. And while it is for fun like Esther said, I'm one of those people who have to get it done regardless. Luckily I've just completed my Goodreads yearly challenge of 100 books, I have 4 books left of the alphabet challenge, this month's group read and challenge read (although combining the two if I can finish it - not enjoying it much), next month's group read, challenge and toppler plus a buddy read I have planned for December. Oh yeah and I NEED to read the library books I have on my shelf as I paid for them to be reserved(3 books - 1 chunkster) so that's 11 books.

message 863: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am not going to finish the ABC challenge. I haven't even read my R book yet. I have resigned myself to the fact that it is not going to happen. Real-life and other challenges got in the way this year. I have enjoyed trying to complete an alphabet though and I will have another go at the yearly challenge next year.

I still have 8 books to go before I complete my Goodreads yearly challenge. I also have this month's challenge book(s) and December's monthly challenge, group read and toppler books still to complete. It can be done. I will do it :)

message 864: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Sarah wrote: "and toppler plus a buddy read I have planned for December..."

I hadn't considered the Toppler. Hope some of the scheduled books will fit the theme.

I also plan on a December Buddy Read and must read the first in the series before the date arrives. Both are of Doorstop proportions and I am counting on them being soooo good that they are easy reads.

message 865: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also have 8 books to read for the Goodreads challenge. I joined the challenge in May with 30 books (of which I read 2 at that point), then increased it to 40 and a while back to 50. I should be able to manage, with 4 books for the challenges and monthly reads this month and next month, and 4 more books just to get to 50.

message 866: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I have 21 books to read to meet my Goodreads challenge goal. If I finish my alphabet (w,x,y,z) that leaves 17. 21 books in 8 weeks? 2 1/2 books a week? I don't think it's going to happen unless I quit work. There's a thought.;)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished my "O" book for the ABC Challenge - The Orchardist. Finally! It took me what felt like forever to finish it.

I started Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife at 3:00 this morning. I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. This book is for my real life book club.

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Peggy wrote: "Shannon, how do books expire on kobo? Is there some kind of library you can use? Or is it through your own library?"

Hi Peggy:

My library books are expiring. They never used to but they are downloaded through "Library Books to Go" which I think is a digital library for the entire Province (ie not associated with any one library but you access it through your local library). It is disappointing that they become unavailable once your time (7-21 days) is up as it is very convenient to use the Kobo for travel and sometimes trips take longer than that or books don't become available at the right time... ah well, its still great to be able to access ebooks for free.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments So I started Steppenwolf at the doctors tonight for my S read. I started it last year on the way to Europe, and decided that because I was sleep deprived and standing in Changi airport at 2am in the morning waiting for the next plane was why I didn't enjoy it then and put it down.

But after it, (possibly along with the screaming child, and the weird high pitched noise that went constantly for an hour), gave me a migraine tonight and I realised I was reading it like my old, compulsory articles reads for tutorials, I think the book is just not for me.

So... to find another S.

message 884: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I'd be interested to know if anyone had read it. It's thrown around as a "Classic" but it just seemed like a semi-philosophical theory paper on the human condition but when the human in question isn't a were-wolf but a steppenwolf. Apparently there is a subtle distinction there that I'm not smart enough to get.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh and funnily, there is in an inscription in the front from a girl who was very much smitten by the intended recipient. I can understand why the recipient sold it to the secondhand bookshop. I just think that's a doomed relationship if your book of choice to give to your beloved is that one.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Finished listening to NOS4A2 which was good, about 200 pages longer than it probably needed to be and am in the minority to say it didn't live up to the huge hype surrounding it. But that's my opinion. Started listening to The Time Traveler's Wife and so far my feeling is rather uncertain that I can endure 17 hours of it. I'm usually all for new ways of time travel but this one I'm just not feeling. Its also written in a confusing fashion. Not sure if its gonna be for me. Luckily I only have a few bucks tied into buying it as a daily deal

message 888: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments It took me a couple of times to get through The Time Traveler's Wife. I ended up liking it but I had to be in the right mood for it. Cold Mountain took me a couple tries too. 17 hours is a pretty big time commitment for a book you are not loving. Hope you find something that strikes your fancy.

message 889: by Lynn G. (new)

Lynn G. I am reading The Secret History The Secret History by Donna Tartt by Donna Tartt. While reading another book I found several references to this title and decided to recommend it for the November read at my face-to-face book group. I was a bit leery about it because the referring book was rather an odd duck and I was afraid that The Secret History might be written in a similar style. Happily, it is not. I find the story very engaging, the imagery well done, and the tension perfect.

I have the book but haven't read it yet. Apparently there was a time in my life when I thought I should acquire (and read) the classics. When I moved over a year ago, I found a bunch of used classics that I don't remember buying. I may have found them at a garage sale during my garage sale addiction.

This title has been cropping up in my path lately. Maybe I should take the hint and read it.

You reminded me that I need to chose and present our next real life book club read on Wednesday night. I'm debating about The Bookman's Tale. Or Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Sarah | 18550 comments I have just finished reading Wool Omnibus which was my W book and a group read in another group. I absolutely loved it - I couldn't put it down! Just bought the follow up Shift Omnibus Edition (Silo, #2) although it will have to wait until I finish the alphabet. Next up is my X (Ex) read - Exit Strategy. I really enjoyed Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series so thought I'd try out one of her other ones too.
